Calculating Winch Loads
Total Weight = Vehicle Weight + Load weight
Winch Pull = ( <Slope degrees> * Total Weight /60)
Ground Factor Weight = Winch Pull * Ground Effect Percentage
Winch Load = Winch Pull + Ground Factor Weight
Example. Given:
* Vehicle weight = 4,400 pounds
* 300 pounds of total load weight
* winch up a 50 degree slope consisting of shallow mud
Total Weight - 4400 + 300 = 4700
Winch Pull - (50*4700/60) = 3917
Ground Factor Weight - 4,700 * 35% = 1645
Winch Load - 3917 + 1645 = 5562

not sure what the "slope" is your pulling your car up,,,,but,,,
eg,,if you use the 50* as below,, and your on pavement,,i think you would be ok...or close.....

Winch load = 2833 + 136 = 2969

I dont think the sloap is even 60 deg its a flip down back door on the trailer, I also padded a couple of hundred lbs to the car its prob around 3200lbs

I use a 3000lb Superwinch to pull my 3250lb Duster on my open trailer. No problem at all.

Most winches are rated to pull a vertical load...
as in your case 3000 lbs it should lift 3000 lbs
vertically... so when you induce a drag weight it will
pull MUCH more than the rated lift weight... I use
a 1500 lbs winch to pull my car up a pretty good angle
on my ramps.............. but I guarantee your 3000
lbs winch will pull your 3400 lbs car up a set of ramps
all day long

You're calculating it backwards. The slope is the angle of the ramp to level ground, and is usually about 10° to 20° for trailer ramps. The 50° was just an example for winching a truck up a steep, muddy slope.
Total weight = 3400

Just starting here(rain).... if you have a 3000 lb
winch it will pull 4500 lbs up a 45* slope(add 1/2
the rated weight... then if you want to figure the
rest of the angles.... go for it)

That looks better, but please note that the angle input is not proportionate to the actual forces. The usual test with a formula is to exaggerate a variable in both directions and see if the results make sense.
Here, a vertical pull would mean multiplying by 90, but 90 ÷ 60 isn't the vertical pull, it's much more.
I have a feeling that the variable you want is a trig function of the ramp angle, rather than the angle ÷ 60.
Example: with a 20° ramp, the variable should be .333 (20 ÷ 60). The sine of 20° is .342, pretty close (2.6% error).
Use 10°, should get .1666667 (10° ÷ 60). The sine is .174 (4.2% off)
Really steep ramps, like 45° and up, are where the angle/60 method begins to fail: 45 ÷ 60 = .75.
The sine of 45° is .707, a lower figure.
Using 60°: the above method says the load is 1.00 (same as vertical), but of course it isn't, it's probably the sine, .866.
Go to 90°: the sine of 90° is 1.0, so the calculation exactly equals a vertical pull (whereas the above method predicts 1.5).
If the winch is too small but has a long cable, just use a pulley (or more than 1). Running the line to a pulley at the load, then back to the winch almost doubles capacity (some minor loss through friction and cable bending). The cable length must be doubled, but of course if splicing it the added cable can safely be as small as 50% of the original rated load.

also what you need to know and is very important is the line speed. I just removed one that took so long to get the car into the trailer you could take a nap.

My ATV had a small wench which was 1500 maybe 2000 lbs rated. It pulled my Dakota onto a flat bed open trailer a few times... No problems... if a 3000 wench cant do this, its JUNK.. I would avoid the cheaper harbor freight type wench's.

the cheapo HF unit but now I drive it in... that
cheapo lasted 8 years using it all the time... maybe
he got a bad one

I have a freind who bought one of the Harbor Freight 2500 or 3000 lb winches(I can't remerber which 
) it work twice and quit pulling his 1964 Dodge 330 two door bracket car into his Pace 24 ft enclosed trailer with the noraml dove tail floor and door 
As Fred said, the 2500 lb winch would almost come to a complete stop pulling my old bracket Duster(3150 lbs with me in it, 2870 lbs without me 
) into my Pace trailer with the normal dove tail floor, the 4500 lb one doesn't slow down at all 
One of my old booses ask me to rescue his 1967 Ford 3/4 ton pick up truck(empty) when it broke down out of town, the 3500 lb winch in that trailer struggle to pull his truck into my trailer 
Warn winches are very good also, according to all the off roaders around here

If this is going in an enclosed trailer you won't have any problems with a 3000lb winch. I had a 2500lb warn winch in my enclosed and never had a problem my car weighed the same or more then yours. Another upgrade i recommend is change the steel winch cable to the synthetic rope, I had a steel cable break when the front tires bounced from trailer to door and luck for me my buddy was walking by to stop the car.

I bought a Warn 8000 off of a widow selling stuff out of her garage for 150 bucks. It was missing the cover and the control handle. Ebay, control handle buy now 50 bucks, and Warn for the cover 60 bucks. I took the winch apart, cleaned and greased it. It works like a champ. With an 8000 lb warn, I have no worries.

Alyerpal and REHBERGER can wad their cars up, tear the wheels clean off of them...... and still get the car back in the trailer!

I've had a cheapy 2000# HF unit for MANY years and it's still working fine. Not going to set any speed record with it.
It's pulled a C body on my trailer with two locked up front wheels.
Only bummer is the switch mechanism has gone on a bender

Yes, it will! I used the elcheapo $49.00 1500# winch from harbor freight for a few years, Like MrPBody did.
I only had to tow the 3000# race car onto the trailor once. But I used it many times to tow other heavier vehicals onto the same trailor at heavier weights, 4500+ or so.
The old El Cheapo $49.00 1500# winch from Harbor freight worked pretty good.
My newer El Cheapo $89.00 3000# winch from Harbor freight is a train wreck. The cable as it unspools binds up like you wouldnt believe. That was never a problem with the 1500# winch.
You get what you pay for! Winch cable speed is also a serious consideration.
As far as wenches, They need love too!

My cheap Harbor Freight 3000 lb winch not only pulls my dragster in but lets it out of the trailer. It may not be a high $$$ warn but still gets the job done.
Sport440,you need to keep tension on most winches as they unspool. Hopes this helps solve your problem.

If you use a snatch block, (another pulley to double line the cable) it will double what you can pull.

I use a 3000# superwinch all the time for my car/trailer. Most of the problems I have seen others have are wiring or battery related (they cheap out and undersize)
