Best Aluminum Radiator for Duster

Best Aluminum Radiator for Duster - 07/22/11 04:58 PM

It's time to put a new radiator in my 74 Duster and perhaps an electric fan. Even with "water wetter" it's pushing 200 a lot of the time using a stock radiator and clutch fan. I was wondering if anyone has used an aluminum radiator that fit nicely, either a drop in or with limited modifications necessary. Any brand preferences, 2 or 3 row, etc.?

Howe aluminum two 1 inch core, weld on brackets on a 26x19 and good to go. Mount a set of 11 in twin spals and never look back.

I spent 30 minutes on the phone today chatting with Tony and I'll be purchasing one with 1.25 tubes for my a-body.

I am running the summit brand 27.5x19 in my big block 73 dodge dart. seems to keep my 11.1.1 pump gas 440 cool. I have not got to do any street driving yet but has never gone over 180 at the track. thanks Mopar65

I have the same radiator(different size)... it had a
U channel on the bottom just like the top... I made
a bracket that has 2 ears sticking up and the bolt
to the U channel both front and rear so thats 4 1/4"
bolts on the bottom... I'm putting on a adjustable
strut on the top from the U channel to the top of
the motor plate(my radiator leans rearward so its
lower to clear the hood

They are awsome though!!

Ive seen them in a few mopars, and they fit like OEM, cool like a big rig, and are a sinch to deal with. they accept ALL factory shrouds too.

If you order one in custom colors it get a little more spendy.

I`ve had my "epoxy" Griffen for many years although it has seeped coolant, nothing some powdered sealer can`t fix.

The Mancini "Muscle Car" down flow 26" aluminum radiator and matching shroud has worked great for me. Its coling a 496B around 550 HP. With AC. I've got it matched up with a thermal clutch fan. It mounts in the stock location and stock repop hoses (NAPA) fit perfectly.

The mechanical fan moves more air than most or all electrics. Unless you have a clearance problem, I'd stay with the mechanical fan. I run mine with the smallish 5 blade low drag fan from MP. I have a bigger 7 blade from a '78 Codoba as backup but haven't needed it.

Another vote for Summit's rad. It has Northern Radiator stamped right on it, I paid 155$.

the Mancini muscle car rad sure looks like a Griffin.
Griffin furnace braze the tanks and coat with epoxy for vibration resistance.
i think the double 1 1/4'' tube unit is rated for 600 hp.

600 HP is what Mancini says for the Muscle Car Rad.

I'm not knocking your experience with the Summit radiator, but I have one in my 500+ hp Duster and in city driving, with the HHR fan, it will keep the motor cool at no more that 180 degrees..

However on the freeway for an extended period of time at 3600 rpm or while pulling a hill, the temp will slowly and steadily creep up to 210.. Thats where I pull over and let it rest..

I have thought about going back to the stock set up as it seems I never had a heating issue before going aluminum..

Re: Best Aluminum Radiator for Duster - 07/23/11 11:06 PM

Last week there was an overheating post on another car with a Champion aluminum radiator and HHR fan - hot at speed. Based on pics it looked like the fan shroud was blocking free air flow on the roll. The poster removed the HHR fan and replaced with a mechanical fan. Overheating fixed. The HHR shroud mounted close to the radiator seems to block air flow when rolling. Its hard to beat the mechanical fan and matching shroud.

Re: Best Aluminum Radiator for Duster - 07/24/11 01:20 AM

friend had overheating at speed.
rem'd the 7 blade clutch fan and shroud used a 20" 5 blade Dioplomat fan.
..problem solved.
i think the 7 blade clutch fans were discontinued on some early big blocks due to overheating..
