Every set of small block indy heads I've used had to be clearanced for 59 degree blocks. I always wanted to throw them on a 48 degree block because I think they would clear with a lot less hassle.
Yes you can turn the 360 mains down to 340/318 size. Don't know how easy it is to convert to wet sump.

What R3 block did you buy Ian? A 9", 9.2" or 9.6" deck height block? I have a list somewhere that has the part numbers and basic specs.
Without knowing what deck height Block you have, it will be difficult to recommend a rotating assembly.

Re: r3 with indy heads - 07/23/11 08:32 AM

Did you get it off Graig Geddes by chance? I know he had one at one stage. He had some 60mm core roller cams he was selling cheap also.
In the pics you sent me, it looks like it has keyway lifter bores, and they don't look like they are in the standard position. I would measure the spacing to be sure. It should be 1.76", but these Comp and PST guys would move things around.
Bore space is going to be around the 4.180"-4.20" mark, with a deck height of around 8.8"-8.9". If you are lucky it's an early engine with 318 mains, otherwise it will have ford 2.25" mains.
The oiling for wet sump will require a few galleries to be drilled, and drain backs added to the lifter valley. Is the bottom of the cam tunnel enclosed?

I have a NIB Comp Cams 60mm Solid Roller, but I doubt it is going to be suited to your combo. Plus you drive that AP6 of yours abit, it would kill too many sets of valve springs!

With any luck Mafo (Ken) chimes in, he has an ex Nickens or Patterson PST engine. Ken is quite helpful.

Re: r3 with indy heads - 07/23/11 10:35 AM

I didn't know he still had the block, I remember him telling me in an email that he picked up some Chrysler stuff in a deal he'd done on a car, he tried selling the stuff, but surprise surprise, no one wanted it over here.
I imagine you are going to change the lifter bore bushings? Check the block for cranks, some of that PST stuff was lightened alot and crack.
Craig might know of some billet cranks for one of those things, but you're not going to be getting any more than a 3.75"-3.8" stroke crank into it, the deck height will be too short.
Let me know if you need anything, I have a couple of odds and sods left over from the W8 engine I was building before I decided to go with a P7 deal.

I m here, just not every day this time of the year...short summers here

If you already have the keyway bushings you better step up and get a set of Jesel or Lsm lifters, I got a like new set for 25% of new price, still expensive but outstanding quality

R3 blocks are usually with 340 mains , I believe R4 s are Ford

For oiling you may go with an external pump, then you don t have to drill anything, easy to prelube and pressure adjustment, you just have to live with that extra belt...

I have 3.55 stroke in mine and everything fits easily, most problems I have had is related to somekind of water leaks, both heads and block

good luck to you and I m glad if I can help

Re: r3 with indy heads - 07/26/11 02:45 AM

P5007360AB featured 9.025" nominal deck height, Ford 2.25" mains, a 60mm tunnel, steel 4 bolt caps and 48* lifter bores. Although many were ordered without lifter bores.
How is the winter over there Ken? I assume that crazy Norwegian is all over the news?
