Timing, Best Street/Strip Distributer for 340/360 - 07/14/11 05:45 PM

I need more inital for better idle. Guy sold me this custom curved vacuum deal, and it ain't working. I am back to the same issue, where I need more inital without more total...

MSD E-curve would probably be your best bet - you can change it with a screwdrier

Lock it out.

Splain how I go about locking it out, and then how I start the engine with say 38* total?

Not sure how you lock that model out but the msd`s easy plus I don`t know of too many smallblocks that want/need that much timing.

I use the MP dist and its easy to set the advance...
I set about 18 initial and 34 total... I dont have
the vac advance on this one but I might get one with
vac for the street rod

It wants 24-25 initial and I have run as much as 41 total. I am still tinkering with total, but when I bring it down to 38, it kills my idle....Too big of a spread to get a really good idle and the total where I want it.

MSD, I made a bushing that gave me 21 initial and 34 total. The ones that came with it left me in the same boat your in.

I just put the lightest springs in and when it starts it goes to whatever I have my total set to. starts fine.

The MP one will do what you want... it has about 25*
of advance in the dist so you would have to reduce the
advance about 5*

So your saying I modify my MP one that I have, because I don't think idling at 15* and having my total at 37* or 38* is going to cut it...

I was told vacuum would take care of all that, and this is an MP one with a vacuum pod, and against all my years of working on these I went with what the guy said, and I will be calling him. He asked me what vacuum the engine idles at, and I told him, I have never even owned a vacuum gauge in all the years I have been racing, well he bult it for 12, and I went and bought a gauge after recieving the distributer and it reads 5-6....All I know is, I get a great idle at 24-25, and good top end around 38-39, but I can't get both. I hate stock crap....NEVER RUN A VACUUM DISTRIBUTER ON A CAR YOU RACE!

Called him back, its been almost a year and he was real good about it. I have one comming with 24* initial and 36* total, no vacuum...

Looked at the MSD E-curve, and I think it will hit the fire wall on my small block:

If I was keeping the truck, I would get one of these in the small cap version, maybe I should get one for the W2 engine in my Cuda, we will see:

Here's a couple of pics of a RB dist which is the same
as a A engine dist when it comes to the guts

Find a old accell dual point convert it to pertronix and you will have the best of both with a dist that you can custom dial easily and not the problems with mag pickups like Mopar perf

Just put two light springs in it problem solved!
