NEW F'glass A-body dash

NEW F'glass A-body dash - 07/12/11 02:42 AM

I have a guy here locally I am contracting to build a dash for a '68 car...he's using my core. Once the mold is made he will make more if there is interest. What I am fishing for here in this post...(don't PM me yet)is some general shape recomendations. I.E.-make it with a dash pad 'bump', fill-in the ash-tray and radio areas, etc...If your interested AGAIN, let me know here please along with a desired styling. Mounting suggestions are encouraged as well so, if noone other than me gets one at least mine will be 'correct'. Thanks, Sean

Thanks for your Doc. I was hoping for you to chime-in (more in a technical sense) because in your day you made a respectable product. All I can assume is the cost will be very reasonable especially if he does a handful. I am not going to get into the business side of this. Again, just looking for suggestions and possible interest.

I would be interested in one that would take a stock dash pad.

Re: NEW F'glass A-body dash - 07/12/11 03:11 AM

Dumb Question #1- 68 had the lower dashpad. Would it have that?

Dumb Question #2- Would the "sweeping" style gauge cluster area be changed to accomodate round gauges like most racers and restomod guys would want???

The reason I ask about the dahpad is if it doesn't have it, a one year only deal, guys with 69-76 A-bodies (such as myself) may be interested moreso.

Personally, I don't care about the ashtray or radio, it can be blank/delete, the area for an HVAC controlhead would a nicety.

Thanks

HB ... THX for the words ... but he has not thrown around any pricing ? Honestly ...I was going to make ANOTHER mold or two and start making them MEself. But I certainly don't have the market cornered on making FG parts !! But the cost is a major factor here .... there was a guy who came on here maybe 8 or so months ago saying he was going to make a dash ...at a cost of something like 400 beans ... yeah right ....

I did mine MAKING the pad as part of the mold. Also .. on the mold(and the finished part) .... the center of the dash was nice and flat and all filled-in so you could put a line of gauges across the whole dash.

Good questions/points...I would consider having a more 'universal' dash molded. Would it be ea$ier to make (read cheaper) I would think without the lower pad bulges? I am unfamaliar with all the different style dashes. Does anyone have decent full-view pics of different styles they could post AS AN ATTACHMENT please?

Pete that's a pretty good looking dash. Who made it? I do think I would like some seam lines in it however. And I'm thinking it would look good with the dash pad bump. Thanks for the pic.

Sean,

There really isn't any "different styles" to the 67-76 A-body. 68 had the one year only bolt-on lower dashpad and then there was the 67-69 Barracuda and Demon cluster with round gauges. Of which it was a blot-in too. Some variation on the heater/ac/radio styling. The basic metal structure was pretty much the same from 67-76. From a racers tandpoint, I would think it's pretty easy to come up with a common piece.

Re: NEW F'glass A-body dash - 07/13/11 05:21 PM

Here is what I did to mine... I think a repop similar to this would be ideal.

https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=6695982&Main=6655818

More show than race obviously. It is a '68 frame, and I didn't like the lower pad, so I welded the holes shut. Also, got rid of the ash tray.

I am getting a dash pad frame to cut up to go around the cage, then will have it recovered.

Thank you Dean. I did have someone ask me about having the Rally dash done in 'glass. Does anyone have a good Rally dash pic? Can I assume the 'demon' with round guages is the 'rally'? Those of you who have posted pics of 'glass' dashes, could you please give me more details; like where did you buy it? do you like it? would you have one made any differently? how much? what was the time turn-around? etc...

No Pictures yet, but I have a fiberglass dash for my car that I am modifying for my racepak display dash. It will look good when complete. Going to airbrush the defrost vents and speaker slots and a few other details under the original suede color. With dash pad it will come in under 8 lbs.

Re: NEW F'glass A-body dash - 07/14/11 02:05 PM

Who made it Brian? FWIW I am LEANING toward a ralley guage cluster area because the 'rounds' will more easily accept an aftermarket round guage.

This isn't for an A-body , but for a B-body. Sled City Fiberglass makes one for the 64-65 B-body and weighs 5 pounds and can also be used in the 62-63 cars with a little trimming. I have one in my 62 Plymouth wagon and it looks great. www.sledcityevents.com

Not sure whos it is. I bought it from someone that didnt use it on their project. It is flat across the face and will take some significant work to make it want I want. I guarantee it to look nice when I'm done though.

Right now I can think of 2 reasons...First, as I originally mentioned. I am having ONE made for me reguardless. I just thought I'd give the guy the best possible oppurtunity to sell some IF he wanted to. I lobbied opinions for a universal standard in design/style. I will pay him a FAIR price (it is, what it is)...which leads me to a part of my next reason...(and please take this constructively.) YOU have a tendency to be quite critical of pricing. Especially because 1) You have been out of business for quite some time. and 2) You are not even a potential customer to many products you are critical about the pricing of. The last part of the second reason is that I am not getting in the middle of someone elses business transactions. I will show and take creative input and opinions. But at some point if he decides he will handle a business side.
p.s.-PM me for pricing..LOL! J/K! J/K!!!

Come on guyz ... I am NOT the only one interested in pricing. And as far as me being a "customer" ? .. HOW wrongO you are. I would buy one to pull a mold off-of ..

I am curious about pricing because if it is like another who posted here maybe a year ago ... he was saying 5 ot 6 huN !

For THAT kind of $$$ ..I would start making them in my HOT TUB room ...

But if they are cheap ... I will just leave that market alone. And as far as my experience in this "market" ... I probably made well-over 100 Duster/Dart dashes over the years.

WOOD I start making them again ? .. sure ...if the market was there.

Everybody wants a price on a dash board that someone might make some day in the future. Just to give you a price on my 64-65 b-body dash board which can be trimmed to fit the 62-63 b-bodies, that is a $280 fiberglass dash board. I also seen a real nice fiberglass dash board, today, in a 68 Dart that was getting some work done at a high end shop here in Columbus. It was from a Dodge Dakota and it looked right at home. $400, $600, for a fiberglass dash board? Someone is on drugs.

Doc, who are you to insinuate a price? At this point, you are not welcome on this post anymore to me. And now Glassman has taken the ball and run with it. What a shame. Make your own dash, name the price and sell it. Until then, go away from this post. Let me speculate a price now...$30 bucks. I think I am owed an apology.

Sorry to offend you or anybody else. Most people don't realise the cost of making just the mold. The time , the effort, the advertising. It all costs big bucks to break into a new market. It would be the same if I were to start making a Charger SRT hood. Mopar piece--YES! New market--YES! Good luck with your new dash board and until I have that item on my list, I will send people your way , only if it is a quality piece. Oh and take it easy on Doc, he forgot how to be sensitive. We are building the 66-67 Dodge Coronet and Charger fender molds right now in the slow season. Next molds are new hemi scoop molds then the another new mold that I can't mention at the present time. And again,Good luck on the new dash mold.

4-5 months old post.....looks like its a pipe dream..though...

just make the damn thing like a bare metal dash with out the dash pad or cutouts. all the factory stuff can just bolt on...
no cut outs for the guages or radio or a/c
then everyone can cut out the holes as they see fit..
they could even put holes in the top to attach a factory pad..
this seems pretty straight up to me?

Re: NEW F'glass A-body dash - 11/05/11 04:11 PM

I spoke with Sean the other day, he filled me in on the project. Seems that he has a custom "one off" dash being made for his own use and that the person who is doing the work is doing it in his free time at substantial cost (I.E. - In no hurry and not cheap) and that this was known up front. He related to me that if others were potentially interested (and patient) he could likely get the builder to make other subsequent dashes made at a substantially (yet currently unpredictable) lower cost. Seems like he's being pretty nice allowing other members to benifit from his efforts and legit to me? IMO it will be worth the wait if it all works out

Why all the strife from everyone? I didn't 'bump' this post to the top from months old. Cheap, I don't know what you are meaning about it being a 'pipe dream'? Is this getting done in a timely manner?...to this point, no. Recently, (actually since about 1 week before Tony bumped the post) the guy I contracted has been back into the project and although he sent me some pics Saturday, the part needed some tweaking to make the dash look the way I wanted. So, things are finally moving along. It will have 'perimeter' negative outlines around the glove box, ashtray, and steering wheel tunnel areas. There will be some articulation up-top around the misc vents/grills. The glove box will include all articulation, including a knob. The dash pad will be cast into the mold. I am working with a vinyl graphics guy for a wrap-pad with texture. The mold SHOULD be cast this week. I will post updates as I get them. Blessings.

I am working with a vinyl graphics guy for a wrap-pad with texture. The mold SHOULD be cast this week. I will post updates as I get them. Blessings.

Keep me informed sir, Sounds good so far. I want mine to look real when im done, but like i say, im a bodyman/painter so i can make anything look good eventually....LOL

Re: NEW F'glass A-body dash - 11/07/11 03:55 PM

My intent wasnt to cause stife...
nor was my pointing out that it was not a new post.
I was trying to get straight to the point...
i appearently was taken as derogatory..
In my case.
I have the windshield out of the race car..
if there is a dash available..now is the time for me to get one ..and install it... before i go through putting in a new windshield gasket..that i waited 4 months to get off back order..lol..

i figured speak now or forever hold my peace..
looks like ill wait a lil longer before installing my windshield...lol...

carry on...Im all ears..

I got one a while back from WS Fiberglass. Not the best quality, but who gives a flying ----.

It's light, fixable and it will look just fine when it's finished.

Being from the Thermoforming manufacturing industry I can tell you that while it's possible, it's not likely due to all of the undercut areas that complicate the shape and couldn't be formed, you'd need to glue some features onto it similar to how the garbage E-body door panels were being vacuum formed by Accuform/Palco, etc. Not to mention that the cost of the mold itself and the labor involved in manufacturing the parts could get pretty expensive. You'd also need to do a lot of trimming and hole cutting as a secondary opperation.

Top...As you can see it needs a quick 'skim' at the parting line. The lighting exaggerates the imperfections. It turned out really nice IMO. I happy anyway.

It does look real from about 5 feet away. I don't know for certain the weight difference. He told me it was nearly 20 lbs lighter but that would probably include 'accessories' that are no longer there. That's where stickers would be nice.

Obviously, the mold is done. One dash is done. Time permitting he is willing to make more...I would speculate now he could have 2 more done by the years-end. Price is up to him but, IMO my price was nice.

I will say ...what others have asked me to say ...

WHY didn't he make an area for the steering column to go through? ... HOW MUCH does it weigh? .. Your price was "nice" ? .. WHY all the shuck and jive?

Just a simple and direct Q for U -- HOW MUCH IS A SINGLE DASH ?

And he can make TWO by the end of 2011? .. IF HE is any type of fiberglass craftsman ... he should be able to produce AT LEAST one a week.

And HOW is my order for FIFTY going ?

Doc, why all the negativity and sarcasm? The guy he contracted to do this has a full time job and is doing this on the side. 2 more by the end of the year for a guy with a full time job, family, and holidays coming doesn't seem to unrealistic. Someone comes on here with on something cool and you pick it apart? He even said in his second post that he's not getting into the business side of it. If you can do better, by all means have at it.

Re: NEW F'glass A-body dash - 11/22/11 07:45 PM

His response was SPECULATION: "Doc, who are you to insinuate a price? At this point, you are not welcome on this post anymore to me. And now Glassman has taken the ball and run with it. What a shame. Make your own dash, name the price and sell it. Until then, go away from this post. Let me speculate a price now...$30 bucks. I think I am owed an apology."

Therefore you "order" is irrelevant!

Thanks for the support fellas. I've learned to just ignore him. I really only had a problem when he implied a price. Back to the dash, I don't remember if I gave Jim (TS3103) credit for loaning me the core to work a mold from. Kudos to him for providing one in a timely manor. I need to 'adjust' the VIN area somewhat as it turned-out pretty readable and we cannot have that VIN all over America and (Canada?). (sorry Jim) I hope I have answered every question? If you have specific Q's there are other means to contact me.
