I think it was Will Darnell who reminded us ....... " You can't polish a turd."
Kidding............kidding.
Probably the best bang for the buck a guy can do on a budget motor.
I have seen the enthusiasm get out of hand and Mr. Carbide being introduced to Mr. Water jacket a time or two..........young and foolish comes to mind.
I never hit it.......I was taking the new age hippie " Where would I go if I was a molecule of fuel or air " approach when I did it.
Funny.....it must have worked because I got a set of small port ( police ) heads with home porting and a gasket match to out perform a set of C.J. heads by a good chunk.

Real men with bad backs dont port much anymore. This a 906 head I worked on that was on the 440 that was in my car. But I wont try to do any major port work anymore as it kills my back being bent over to grind on the heads an boy does it hurt. Dwanye Porter did the Indy heads on my eng thats in my 63 now and what a great job he did. Ron

Roadhazard; how did you get those roughed up like that? I used 50 grit, and slowed the die grinder way down, but my intakes seem a little too smooth to me.

Re: real men port cast iron heads - 06/19/11 09:32 PM

I did a pair of 906s sitting on top of a garbage can in an alley, when i worked at Borowskis back in 87,went to a guy in Kankakee or Bourbanais named Alan, went on a street racer. were not pretty but,did not hit any water jackets,2.14/1.81 valves, epoxied some spring cups for big triples, intake ports ended up not fitting any known or avail gasket....had to make them..they ported the intake to match, worked great on a .060 440 with 4.00 stroker crank...i think it was around 511-512 cubes...real old school as that is what we knew back then.

Thanks Joe!!!!! But I cant take the credit. A real good friend in Ky ported and flowed them for me. He is VERY reasonable and GOOD!!!! He said that they were the BEST stock smallblock head he has done. They flowed pretty well too.

Re: real men port cast iron heads - 06/20/11 01:21 AM

Dwayne and I did some Equest heads together, and you'd be surprised at what they responded to, what they didnt like, and what made them go backwards. Some of standard cylinder heads mods, didnt respond well. Some very very simple things worked excellent. Its not always bigger and hawged out is better. Shiny doesnt mean fast.... ...they are great little heads in my opinion, and can be made to work very well with MINIMAL work.

You "forgot" to share any pertinent info - not to mention any pics. Simple ( usually means obvious ) things always show big improvement when you are starting with A stock casting. "Shiny doesn't mean fast" is a true statement.

My 915 castings after being freshened up this year with new 2.14 1.81 valves, springs, guides and valve job. They're mildly bowl and match ported for street use on the GTX.

Re: real men port cast iron heads - 06/20/11 03:14 AM

On the subject of port finish (shiny), that argument has been around sice Joe M. was porting heads for Mazmanian. IMO, port finish has little to do with flow ( changing the boundary layer / fuel drop-out, etc.). Those things are driven by port shape and velocity. I like smooth ( shiny if you will )intake ports for the same reason I make the exhaust ports and backs of the valves smooth. They just stay cleaner longer. I'm sure there are a million professional porters out there that will disagree with me on this, but - there has to be something that seperates the amateurs from the professionals.
