shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 02:46 AM

thrashed to get the car ready for the small tire race in Ky

ran a shake down pass to make sure it went straight, trans shifted and i had brakes

foot braked it pretty much from an idle, laid it down part throttle shifting @ 6,600 rpm and let out just before the stripe.

5.86 with a 1.32 60 and 114mph

had a big smile on my face from that shake down pass

it still had almost 250 more HP from the dyno sheets from what it made at 6,600 rpm

now time to turn the thing up to lay a number down.

we pulled back up to the staging lanes, i fired it up and put it in gear to pull out and i hear a tining noise i shut it off as quick as i could
we pulled it back to silverfishs pit, only place we had light to see what went wrong.
i started pulling plugs out on the #1 side as Vic started pulling plugs on the other side.
he got to #2 cylinder and the plug was smashed
pulled the valve cover and #2 cylinder had dropped a exhuast valve

i pulled the head to see how bad it was
need a new piston, lucky the cylinder wall doesnt have a scratch in it
head isnt hurt very bad also
should be a easy fix then its time to turn this beast up

Bob, what do you figure happened
Posted By: BobsProFab

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 02:56 AM

im sure it stressed out the valve from the dyno pulls
the first time on the pump i broke a few springs, replaced them and went back on the pump
total of 28 pulls on it at 10,000 rpm

thats racing, $hit happens !

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 02:56 AM

That sucks, Bob. This is a used bullet, right? I would treat the motor like any roller motor, and pretend it's at it's 250 pass maintainence check. New roller lifters, new bearings, hone, new rings, zyglow the crank and rods, valve job and new springs and keepers. And since one valve died, I sure as h e l l wouldn't reuse any of the remaining 15. That's how I see it.

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 02:58 AM

Sorry to see that Bob Hope you get it done and show 'em how it's done!!

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 02:59 AM

I would be curious to hear how old the valves were, or has the valve seized up in the guide possibly?

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 02:59 AM

it will come completely apart to go over ever thing
im steping up on valve size also
these 6mm stems dont like any valve train funk !

Sorry to hear about the carnage but the shake down pass looks promising. I really hope you get that small block Mopar into the Thompson Renegade 8.90 class this year.

But......once this new trans of mine is done.... Just be ready for the $hit talking to resume.....

Oh, and I see the curiosity got the best of you.... Did you pull the whole motor or just the head.

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 03:25 AM

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 08:36 AM

Good Idea to tear it all down and check everything Bob.
My cyl looked Good and no marks from the dropped valve but upon complete teardown we found a crack in the cyl wall.
Take your Time and make sure all is GOOD before something bad happens from trying to rush it back together.
Sorry to hear about the motor though.
If I can Help any let me know.

Bondo's R5/P7 Maiden Voyage

Here's a link to the video clip I took.

That thing is going to fly on an all-out pass.

cant wait for a all out pass.

I guess we all know now how a 358" cup motor will work in a drag car

Wow, that thing sounded SICK! Cool car Bob!

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 02:00 PM

Wow, I actually see this as good news! Dropping a valve can wipe out an entire engine, so losing a piston and dinging a chamber up a bit is a Godsend compared to what it could have been.

It sounds like that little mutha is really gonna boogie when you get a full pass in

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 02:20 PM

Good first showing Bob. I agree it's gonna fly when you drop the hammer. I'm sure you'll be running again in no time.

Sorry to hear about the mishap Bob, but I am sure it will be good as new or better when you get her fixed, I agree with everyone, as unfortunate as it was it sure could of been much, much worse.

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/14/11 06:55 PM

Glad to hear that you listened to the engine and shut it off immediately. To many people don't listen and respond. It sounded killer on the video and I'm sure it will lay down a number when ready again. Way to represent the SB crowd.

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/15/11 12:46 AM

Your board resident keyboard racer here: It sounds like it is flashing the converter the entire pass. Probably just the audio of Vic's clip. REALLY sounds great.

Re: shake down with the Dart - 06/15/11 01:11 AM

With an A-1, 7" converter that flashes 7800 RPM, I think you heard right.
