When is it worth it to remove the exhaust.

When is it worth it to remove the exhaust. - 05/13/11 06:38 PM

I drive to the track.

450 stroker, Aluminum heads, Performer RPM intake. 282S Comps Cam (528 lift w/ 1.6 rocker ratio), 850DP, 1 3/4 headers to a 3 inch collector and 3 inch 40 series flowmasters. 3.91 gear.

I run M/T Drags, 28x9x14

Would I see any real timeslip difference by taking the exhaust off at this power level.

Try it and see I have had two cars that I have done at the track testing, one was a 1969 Dart GTS with a stock bore high compression 440 motor, 727 and a race nine inch BM converter, BB Hooker fenderwell headers into a 2.5 pipe with 2.5 inch turbo mufflers mounted as side pipes exiting in front of the rear tires, it picked up .9 ET(nine tengths) and 9 MPH by removing the mufflers and pipes in the 1/4 mile at LACR, CA I didn't believe it was posssible, I made a bunch of runs that day and it( the differences) was absolutely accurate My current street and strip car is a BB Duster( a second and a half faster than the Dart was, 10.30 at 128 MPH)) that has a BB 518 C.I. pump gas stroker motor with a 727, ten inch custom built converter and a 3 inch exhaust system with a set of 3x14 oval Mgnaflow muffs mounted at the rear bumper with the same Hooker fenderwell headers as on the Dart, I ran the car at the local 1/8 mile track, Madras, OR and that car picked up .03 ET and .2 MPH by removing the complete exhaust system at the track, not worth doing in my opinion)probally the weight was the differences) My message is to try it and see, maybe it will pick up a bunch and maybe it won't. The mufflers will be the key Let us know your results

Worth about a .15 gain. We figure part of that is weight lost. You may pick up a bunch if the exhaust system is junk. Worth all the pain? Probly not just for a time slip.

Unless you are running heads up , I'd figure what it likes , write it on the window and go some rounds.
If you have to go as fast as possible , then go for it.
But be ready to jet and tweak a bit.
I'd say that the 1 3/4 primaries are already a restriction if you are looking to go for the whole Magilla though.

Especially with an 8 hour ferry ride and a 100 mile drive to the drags.

First time going with this setup, too. Should just run it and minimize the road headaches.

Drags aren't until the 28th. I'll let you know how they went.

Alright untill you run 11.01, or 10.01, then the spanners will be straight out.

'Spanners'; in U.S. English this means wrenches.

Although 'putting the boot in' means the same thing.

I used to drive my 440 Charger to the track bolt on the slicks and run 13.00s all night long. This was when there were 4 different bracket classes so it ran at the bottom of Heavy ET, if I wanted to run in Super Pro I'd drop the exhaust and run 12.80s all night. So for me it was a class ET break, SP paid more than double what Heavy payed.

There is a solution to this, you know. Install cutouts. I run about 18" of 3" pipe off my headers (3" flange); then a set of 3" cutouts, then down to 2-1/2" out the back. I drive to the track, 5 minutes to open up, and away I go. 5 minutes at the end of the night to cork back up. With the old 383, I actually went faster with this setup than open.

Car ran a 7.53 in the 8th. With severe axle wrap.

850DP has not been touched, so I think there may be some there, too.

The 28" tall ET Drags made a monkey of the 3.91 gear.

Never took the exhaust off.

My old setup with 3" TTi and Dynomax muffs added 70 pounds and the car went the same 11.11 to 11.14 every time. So I have never run open headers again.. Too much noise for no reason!

OLD SETUP
446 with 1050 dom. and .650 comp flat tappet.
906 heads.

And none of you re-jetted for the open headers so
you gained nothing and figured it doesnt matter
EDIT
but the length of the exhaust might help in making
torque because no one puts on a collector extension
which the total collector length should be about 16"-18"

Sorry I did not spell out my complete process,
Mine was a track only car at this time,

Car had 12" turn down extentions, I also when down about 3 jet sizes if i remember right ,Was 1996 I thought it was a wash since the short times where better but lost 1 mph..

Thats strange, I always jet up on a header only car
and jet down with exhaust(due to the back pressure)

I was going from OPEN HEADERS TOO FULL EXHAUST!! IS THAT CLEARER!!!

I was only posting my results to help inform the OP,
A simple I misunderstood is fine

Re: When is it worth it to remove the exhaust. - 06/07/11 08:44 PM

.02 in ET, no change in mph over 4 runs and 3 jet changes...

....which, at the time, seemed like a waste of time.....

However, that was before .02 would have got me a 10
second ET

But! that was with a 3" H pipe, and now I have a larger X pipe, so anymore....who the heck knows

Honestly I'm not sure I even care anymore....

I'd feel pretty dumb to say my street car would run XX.XX, after I take the exhaust off. I don't drive around on the street with the exhaust off so it doesn't matter what it runs without it.

I put some effort into fabricating my exhaust to act as really long header extensions + a crossover to improve power, rather than as a cork to make it quiet....so it would hopefully not have to come off, to do what I want it to do.

That isn't much of an answer is it
