1965 AFX Altered Wheelbase ? - 05/09/11 09:57 PM

Thinking about building an 1965 AFX car for the street.
I need to decide is it's a Dodge or Plymouth, plus if sedan or hardtop. It's going to depend on what fiberglass stuff is available these days.
1) Does anyone still make fiberglass doors.

The original AFX factory cars were hard tops with sedan doors. Plymouth or Dodge are available in both sedan and hard top. Don't discount a 4 door for this project as it would be nearly as easy. Check with Sled City. I believe they make everything you'll need.

as far as factory supplied ( amblewagon built ) they were all hardtops. The sedans were independant racer / dealer done cars

Anybody with parts or AFX project cars car PM me. I have a lot of technical info and old 1965 magazine stuff on the cars. I would try to make it as original as possible, But I think it would need some upgrades.
I would want disc brakes on the front,an 8 point cage to tie the body together, an EFI tall stack injection, etc.

Jim Schild put out an incredibly detail book about the 65 AWB cars, I got a copy from Mancini Racing. Excellent reference source for build details.

Just my $0.02..

For reference, my Plymouth still has the factory fiberglass parts and bubble windshield.

The only "factory" sedan was Bill Flynn's Yankee Peddler, the rest of the factory cars were all hardtops.

There were quite a few privately done cars, a lot of them were converted A990 cars.

Here is a couple of good photos of Butch Leals 65 AWB... appears to be that they were hardtop bodies with post doors.

So how does one convert a 4 door to a 2 door sedan?
1) Would I need the doors from a 2 door car?
2) I guess you remove the rear door and install a new quarter panel?

Same way you build a 2 door wagon.... use the front doors from a 2 dr, then use the quarter window and the sheet metal below it and the pillar, graft them into the opening for the rear door... voila!!! 2 door!

I's all cool but this will be an ill driveing thing on the streets unless you do some modern suspension stuff do weight and balance on the wheelbase. Shock factor....go for it!

I'm slowly getting out of sprint cars where I can only do wheelies on the track (and that depends on how sticky it is). With an AFX car I can do wheelies at every stop light. Unlike sprint cars I'll slow down for the corners.

So does the saying "it is not if I crash but when", apply too?

We just came out with a new addition to our 65 Dodge line of fiberglass parts. Backup delete plates. All a990 and awb 65 Coronets had them.
