A body spring relocation and 8 1/4 rear - 05/06/11 01:34 AM

I'm building a driver for my 16 year old on a 73 dart 318 three speed and has an 8 1/4. Looking through the archives is a little vague but i want the biggest street tires and wheels I can squeeze in there. what offset on the stock rear should i look for and how big a tire?
any advise & pictures are appreciated.

You're a cool Dad. You should be able to get a 8 1/2" tire in there, if you relocate the springs to the frame rail 10 1/2 to 11 depending on backspace of the wheel. I have 6 1/2 backspace and 10" slicks with about 3/8 clearance on the rolled fender. I still have 1/2" or so on the spring. You can shorten the axle use less backspace and load wider rubber. The 8 1/4 will hold anything he can throw at it with a 318 and LSD's are available.

Thanks Stick, I thought it should come out to about 6.5
The dart I have is a factoy t3b super blue car but ironically my son wants to paint it white with the stripe and it also has the dart sport hood, I showed him your pic and he went right out side and started working on it!

i have to agree that you are a cool dad! those 8 1/4" rears are pretty strong even if they get little credit.

Well Thanks, I built a 68 belvedere for my oldest boy and he went to be a Marine so his ride has just been sitting for the last several years. My plan is to for now, Spring Location, Subframe connectors & later put an 8 3/4. That way the foundation is done and he can just use it for High School & Do a small Block stroker when we can.
I found The wheels I think will work here on Moparts in the race section. 15x 10 with 6.5 backspace.
I'll check it out!
Mike

OK.. update on The Boy's project. The car is painted and looks great,
just finished the mini tubs and relocation kit. I was going to leave the 8 1/4 in but a buddy came through with an 8 3/4 and thats mocked up at this point. I'm back to the question of what is the biggest tire and wheel combo that will fit and what offset. I have a bare 15x8 with a 3'' front space and looks like it will barely clear with a tire mounted.
I'd like to do a 15x10 but don't want to order wheels without being sure. Rear end is stock length.
anyone have pictures and specs?
thanks in advance
Mike

It took a while but its close to done and it doesnt look it but it has 15x10 7.5" backspace with 295 50 15 goodyears on the back and I have enough room for 3" more rubber. I tried to get 6.5" backspace on the rear but wouldn't go so it looks like stock offset from the side.
The Boy can't wait to drive it to school.
