tire v.s. power output? - 04/20/11 07:46 PM

Building a 69 Dart with a new passon 5 speed. The motor I'm hoping will be 600+hp my question is can I get away with the stock wheel wells and the offset spring hangers or should I mini tub and use the offset hangers? Or do I need to go all the way to moving the mounts in 3"? This isn't going to be a race car per say but I still would like it to hook up somewhat. I've already had my body man finesse the wheel well and roll the wheel lip so I've gained a little room. Thanks

600+HP, move the springs in and go to at least a mini tub, I have ran the same car with cut up wheel wells using a 29x10.5x15 slick with a 727 and a race 10 inch converter. That motor did not make 600 HP and those tires held it well. I sold the car(1969 GTS 383 H code car) and later bought it back, I had a set of stock wheel wells and 1/4 panels installed, the car won't accept a decent size tire now

I want to mention that I'd like to keep the factory style exhaust tips. I don't mind cutting the spare tire well out or making the gas tank smaller.

When I had the springs moved into the sub frames(not centered in the frames,I had them moved to the outside edge of the inner sub frames on the front mount for the springs to get more clearnce to the gas tank on the passenger side see the picture)
I had to dent the passenger side of the stock gas tank because I wanted to keep the stock tank for on the street driving My car was bought with no motor, trans. or exahust sytem so I don't know where the stock exhaust tips come out. I bought a Summit 3 inch exhaust system for the Mopar A bodys and had a lcoal muffler shop install it so the muffs are mounted at the rear bumper bewteen the rear sub frame and outer 1/4 panels, fenders You can see the muffler mounts and part of the muufs in the picture, I think My other car has the muffs(Magnaflow 14x7 3 inch ovals) in the same location and it is fairly quiet until you go to WOT Oops, forgot to attach the picture

Is it a A or B engine... B engine will make more
torque on the low end... A engine you would need to
rev it up to make torque unless its a stroked and it
will still require some revs

My '68 GTS makes around 600HP and I've got stock wheel wells.......27X9 Hoosier Quick Time Pro's......springs moved in......4.10's and a 4-speed.........at 3,550LBS race weight has run 10.66 @ 127 so far but I can't leave real hard because it runs through the clutch......I've never had any kind of traction issue, even in the middle of summer on greasy tracks.....

The secret to making it work is; LOOSE FRONT END WITH GOOD SHOCKS!!!!!!.....Heim joint strut rods and control arms......Poly lower bushings.......Cal-Trac front shocks.......6 cyl. T-bars......

Guess I should have detailed my plans a hair more. Motor will be a W5 stroker small block. Front end will be a AlterKation w/ coil overs, rear will be 4.10 Dana 60, Caltracs w/ monoleafs. This car will be mainly street driven so I understand I may have to give up some things. Tires will probably be M/T ET streets, unless something else is recommended here?

I wouldnt even mini tub it... move the springs in
and call it quits... yes you might sacrifice the 60'
some but it doesnt mean you will... put the biggest
tire under it that fits and enjoy it(it'll hook if
you set the front loose on extension)........ JMO
I'm building a Rampage with a 416ci with W-5s but
my build is a tube chassis car but I'm building it
for the street..... all you need to do is find the
happy point for the launch
