Re: 11 second 440 - 04/17/11 06:18 AM

My 70 road runner,has a stock bore 440,6bbl,with a 500cfm center carb,mopar 557 solid cam,1.6 Crane roller rocker's,eddy heads.A 8in PTC covertor(5000stall)with 4.10 gears and a 28.5/10.5x15 slick.Has run a best of 11.53@118. It weight's 3895.After we put the cage in it,a 590 cam and 4.88 gears it ran a 11.58@98. We had to short of a shock on it with s/s spring's.And I had to lift around half track.The cage weight at lease 200#.

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/17/11 08:50 AM

I personally think with a heavier car as yours, I would guess a 505 on pump gas and some edelbrock rpm heads and around 250@050 or so solid lifter or roller cam and I think you would be there. Porting the heads would help too if low 11s are the goal. There's a big difference between high 11 and low 11s. I don't have any real world experience with the big block quite yet so this is all an educated guess.

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/17/11 01:17 PM

I dont believe your setting your goals very high, I have a 67 A body that weighs 3200 w/me in it, and its old motor (last year) was running 11.50's with no problems. The 440 was a 68 block, 906 heads with small factory valves and slight gasket matching, .557 mopar cam, ductile rockers system, team g intake, 850 holley w/ a proform body, I believe the part # on the trw pistons were L2295s if I remeber correctly, wich were about 10.5 compression I think, on factory rods shifting at 5800rpm. My car has an automatic with a Coan 3500 streetable convertor, and a 8 3/4 w/35 splines and 4:10 gears... Pro parts headers into a full 3 1/2" magnaflow dual exhaust system, the car is a handfull on the street

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/17/11 01:33 PM

As a point of reference, here's what can be done while being on a budget and still be completely streetable:

'70 Barracuda that runs a cast crank 440 w/ 906 heads, 4.10 gears, 9.5" PTC converter, 850 AED Holley, M1 single plane, .588 Ultradyne solid flat tappet cam, 10.3:1 actual compression w/ Ross flat tops, Hooker Comp headers, TTI 3" X-pipe exhaust, 295/65 drag radials (or 275/60 ET Streets...runs the same)

Not sure what the car weighs, but I assume around 3500 w/o driver. Full interior, all steel, heavy Magnum 500's, etc...

In 100% street legal trim, runs 11.50's @ 118mph. Ideally, the car has 11.40's in it once I get the rear suspension sorted out. (One of these days...not a big priority honestly...just a fun car that is on the street much more than the strip.)

With that said, 'streetable' has a different meaning to every person you ask. It's all in what the person can tolerate I guess.

This burnout was a little overboard.

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/17/11 02:41 PM

I'm currently running 11.80s in a heavier 71 b-body (RR) with a sixty over, stock stroke 440. Stock six pack intake and carbs. I have out of the box Source Stealth heads and a Comp Cams 550/570 solid cam. Hooker Super Comps and 3 inch TTI exhaust with H pipe and some ancient 3 chamber Flowmasters, no tail pipes. 727 with forward pattern manual valve body and stock slapstick shifter. 9.5 inch 4,000 Dynamic converter. 4.10 gears and old Super Stock springs. I think 11.60s or .50s are still in my combo just waiting to be found.

I know some won't like to hear this and won't agree, but I see the 4 speed transmission as your biggest obstacle to your goals. I used to race a 4 speed car and I'll never do that again. Just can't beat a good converter and manual valve body.

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/17/11 03:00 PM

CNC ported alum heads make your goal easier whether you stroke it or not.
With 3.91's you could be mid to high 11's with a 440 and low 11's with a 496/505.
Figure 10.5-1 compression with alum heads(pump gas friendly).Camshaft recommendations will get you as many answers as replies.
Todays hyd grinds can get it done and solids make it a little easier.Rollers are great but cost to much for me(or I am too tight).
You need to figure out what size motor, which cylinder head, intake manifold, size of headers, and what size carb before you even think about camshafts.
Then you can get a converter made that works with all of the above.
The default 500hp build in the tech archives will probably get you high 11's with a good converter and a chassis that hooks.

EDIT:
I see it is a 4speed and a six pak so you have that covered.

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/17/11 03:43 PM

IMO,the engine will need usable low rpm power, like good power down to 2,000.
With a 4spd.,and god I love`em the approach will not be identical to an auto.
1st issue is getting off the line.
Either spin, lug the motor,or hook w/rpm`s and see what goes first-the car or the drivetrain.
Your not going to get Automatic type 60fts. without lots of gear 4.88 or more and or a slipper type clutch{exspensive and not street freindly}
So you will have to make up some of what you lost down track, which can work because a manual trans. is more efficient than an auto.
When I went from auto to stick my MPH. went from 131mph to 135mph at the same E.T.
Just sharing my expeirences.
Can you do it ABSOLUTELY
And it will be a blast to drive!

several things needed to accomplish your goals, better(bigger) exhaust system to start with and a good fuel system traction will be a issue also along with longivity on that 8 3/4 once you start to hook it up real well As far as the motor is this is fast as you really want go If not look at building a stroker motor with a decent set of good heads I have a 452 C.I.(stock stroke)440 with a set of ported big valve 906 heads that has ran 11:30 on pump gas corked up in my 3450 lb. Duster, that motor made 512 HP and 545 ft. lbs torque, nothing special in it. 9.4 to 1 compression and so on. PM me if you want specifics and more combinations. I also have a 464 C.I.(440 with a 3.91 stroke) Eddy headed six pak motor that ruyns low elevens and high tens on pump gas in my Duster the 518 C.I. low deck six pak motor ran low tens in my Duster

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/17/11 08:47 PM

I run mid 11's with a mild 440 in my 63 but I agree a stroker is the easiest way to do it. Mine is a .030 over stock stroke 440 with stock crank and rods and KB quench pistons that gives me 10.0 comp and quench with my 906 heads I ported. I use the MP .557 cam and the Holley SD intake with an 850 DP. I run 1-3/4 hedman headers and 3" pipes. It runs fine on 92 pump and has run a best of 11.49 on a great day at 3700 lbs. My normal ets are 11.50's to 11.70's on average days.
Whichever you build I would keep it simple and build a flattop piston zero deck eng with closed chamber heads and use a .039 head gasket for good quench. Good luck , Ron

040 440, 10.5 comp, ported 452s (no flow numbers, but probably 250-260@ .600), M1 intake, 950HP,2 inch Hookers, 259/.550 Comp TL solid, 5k flash converter, 4.30 gear. 3800lbs, 11.3X's. With a 4k vert went 11.49.

Very nice combo on the street and runs find on pump fuel!!

The heads are out of the box. This car has full interor,10 point cage, and is all steel. Now that we have the shock's right it should run in the high 10's low 11's.It has 3 inch flowmasters on it,to the axle.We have driven it on the street.

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/19/11 02:40 PM

My 74 cuda had a bone stock 440 with ol heavy trw2355 pistons. I put on a set of Indy Ez stock port heads, a hughes 576 solid cam, eddy victor Int with demon 850carb, Hooker comp headers with 3' exh. I run 3.91's and i have a 3500 tci stall. I know some of my parts could be improved on and i still manage a 7.25 in 1/8th.(mid 11's) Im convinced that 7.20 or better is in it. This with stock springs and 275/60 M/T ET streets. So i would say mid 11's are very easy with a stock stroke 440. Trick is the heads, cam, carb, stall, gears need to match up.

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/19/11 04:59 PM

My old combination went (in good air) 11.77 @ 115 in my 69 RR. It was a very mild, completely streetable, combination. I used to get almost 15mpg on the highway if I drove it gently.

MP 484 hydraulic cam
Stock E-heads
440 .030 over - stock lower end
10:1
Six pack with QF metering blocks
3:91s
hooker super comps 1 7/8"
Its a 4 speed car but I was using a 727 instead.
tight 10" converter

It ran great for years. I could drive it to the track, race, and drive home if I wanted. It would have been faster and less expensive with a single 4 and a Performer RPM. Eventually, one of the 40+ year old, stock rods failed and that was that...

Re: 11 second 440 - 04/20/11 02:50 AM

here's what I have, very similar to what your doing, and i'll tell you my experiences.

i like to play at the roll bar rule, keep this in mind.

74 Challenger - 3660 lbs. with me in it
30 over 440
11:1 weisco pistons
stock rods with good bolts
stock stroke crank
main studs
1/2" hemi pickup tube, block drilled and tapped for 1/2"
milodon lo-pro oil pan w/ windage tray
stage 2 ported indy ez heads
crane 1.5 gold rockers w/ good shaft hold down kit
hughes cam - hydraulic - .548 I - .555 E - 238-242 @ .050
edelbrock timing chain
mopar m1 intake
worked quick fuel carb, 1100 cfm
hooker super-comp headers
3" exhaust out the back w/ thrush "flowmaster-style" mufflers
70 18 spline 4 speed
ram clutch and flywheel
lakewood bellhousing
3.73 8 3/4 rear with the good sure grip
strange axles
6-an fuel system with holly blue electric pump
275-60-15 drag radials
full interior - stock seats

i have a best time of 11.63 @ 118.8 . average 11.7 to 11.8

i can run pump gas, but i do notice a performance difference. i usually blend 93 Sunoco with 114 and it's a little easier on the pocket. this is such a fun car to drive. ripping through the gears is awesome but the 4 speed is definitely the thing that's holding this car back. with an auto and the right converter, i could probably go 4-6 tenths faster. like everyone said, you will do better racing an auto over a 4 speed. the biggest problem is getting a good launch. it's just practice, practice, practice. don't expect to win a lot at first. i wanted the 4 speed over the auto though. for me, it's all about ripping through the gears. whether it's on the street or the track, i love doing it every time. and that's why i'll go a little slower over the auto. for others, it's all about the consistency and winning. i'm just out to have fun.

oh, about the roll bar rule thing. once you go faster than 11.50, there's a whole different set of rules you have to go by. i don't want to have to put the roll bar in my car and i like having the stock interior. the safety rules i agree with. i have good axles, bellhousing and a drivshaft loop. even with running in the 12's you gotta think safety too.
