Holley carb main body vent tubes...

Holley carb main body vent tubes... - 04/05/11 02:18 AM

The vent tubes on the main body of my 8082 dominator... are they set at a certain height for a reason? my front vent is higher than the rear and is causing interference with my air cleaner lid. I'm trying to SQUEEZE my 16" air cleaner under my hood and have drastically cut my Indy intake for fitment and have bought a 2" drop base to make it fit with a 3.5" filter and it would probably fit without the tubes sticking up. With the tubes sitting up 3/4" above the main body a 4" element can BARELY be forced to work with slight hood interference.
Can the tubes be shortened- and if so- how much?
I'm running a K&N flow thru lid and it has a flat metal screen across the bottom- not domed as it may appear on the bottom so the tubes cannot fit up inside the lid.
No matter what base or height of filter I use clearing the vents is a problem before I hit the hood.... I might drop the K member but I am not cutting this hood(yes I'm being totally stubborn )

I would cut the vent tubes down, you have to get some airflow to them.If they are tucked up into the air cleaner lid,you won't get the air to them, although the flow control lid will help some. The holes in that lid are not very big IIRC.

You can cut them some but if I did I would try and
run a hose between them with a cut in the top of the
hose for venting.... if you get the vent to close to
the air horn it will suck fuel out of the vents

My bad...I said flow control A/C lid- it's the x-stream flow thru lid- so there is quite a bit of air flow through it.

Thanks for the replies guys!
Now that I'm back from the MATS I can get back to addressing this problem. One thing I should have asked is- are the vent tubes removable?

I had one vent tube(rear) pull out of a old Holley 4780(800 CFM D.P.) on a run, it had a piece of hose from the front vent tube to the rear one and of course it fell down the rear barrels at WOT It broke two spark plugs before the dang tube blew out of that cylinder through the exhaust I got lucky as it did not hurt the piston, cylinder wall or valves or valve seats I have treid to pull some out with a pair of pliers with no luck, I wanted to install some longer ones so I could use the hose to vent the front bowls to the rear of the air cleaners Lots of ways to skin the kitty, try using a small tubing cutter on it

Thanks Cab, what's your opinion on the angle cut on them- required or not?

BTW- your car looks very nice in person!

No angles needed in my opinion thanks for the compliment on the car, I have a stock type white 1971 Duster stripe kit that didn't get installed do to running out of time to get the car running and back together

I've ran them on Dominators with them removed completely... I don't think your car is going to be doing any wheelstands with polyglass tires on it, so I would just remove them & not worry about it. Just make sure your float level is set correctly.
