What will it run? 440

What will it run? 440 - 04/01/11 05:25 PM

Just bought some parts to go with a 440 in my Valiant and I'm just wondering what I can expect ET wise. The build is going to be pretty simple .060 over 440, stock 906 heads, probably a 509 cam or a mild solid, old Tm-7 or some other single plane and a 850 holley. I may end up going with a glide but what ever trans I go with will have a 9.5in converter and I'll be running a 3.55 gear(all I have besides a 5.38) and a 28" tire. The car weighs 3100 with me and fuel with the smallblock. I want to run atleast 7.50's in the 1/8th

My 3450 lb. Duster with a sinmilar 440 ran low 12.s(12.01 to 12.13) in the 1/4 years ago on pump gas corked up I don't remember the 1/8 mile times, sorry

Thats about what i would say, I ran 6.9s/7.0s/10.90s/11.0s depending on the weather at 3100 race weight & 4.10 gears/28" slicks with a similar set-up, now it was a low-deck 451/stock 906s/XE284H/750dp/M1 single/9.73.1 comp./PTC 9.5" 4400 stall shifting at 5600.

Consider running an rpm intake or the Holley street dominator for a single plane.THe small solid may work better on the low end with the 3.55 gears. All that may be a moot point depending on your stall speed.

that will be real close, use the 5.38 and a 5000rpm stall and you will get close to a 7.50. 727 only

Re: What will it run? 440 - 04/02/11 12:02 AM

With a bone stock 440 and vert in that car it should run 12.50,s

With the 3.55 gear Id want around a 4000 stall vert and 10.0 comp. Id use either a RPM or SD single plane. With traction that could be good for 11.20,s or so.

My old 9.7 484 MP stock vert street combo @ 3320# ran 12.40,s @ 113 MPH with street tires. With slicks it ran 11.75.

Add in your 9.5 vert and less weight, even with the 3.55 gear you should do better then that, IMO

For reference, 7.65/1/8 = 12.00 --7.50/1/8 = 11.75

3100 lbs + 440/stock heads/509' cam + 9.5" (4000 rpm) converter/3.55 gear = 7.65 range 1/8 mile

His post claimed 3100 with the small block,i would add at least 150 for the pig block.

I saw that and tried to adjust my guestimates for it.

I also saw your numbers What kind of combo do you have going on?

Re: What will it run? 440 - 04/02/11 03:56 AM

I'd be happy if I could get 7.80's out of it with the 3.55's. I plan on going to a 4.10 or 4.56 after I get the engine in the car and everything worked out....I don't want to spend all my money before then lol

You should get the 7.80 with the 3.55, maybe even a little better.

Re: What will it run? 440 - 04/02/11 04:59 AM

The build is almost identical to mine. I have a .030 906 headed 440 with the .557 solid cam and the Holley SD intake with an 850. My 63 weighs 3700 with me and I use a Dynamic 9.5 converter and 4.30's with 30" tall tires. 11.49 best and 7.28 best in the 1/8. I say you should hit 11.70's which is about 7.50's in the 1/8. Good luck , Ron

Re: What will it run? 440 - 04/02/11 06:51 AM

I think it needs a little more gear and maybe a little better intake. My brothers scamp has a mild 440, .030" cast piston, decked block, home ported 346 heads, 509 cam, team G intake, tci street fighter converter, 4.10 gear 26x8 m/t slicks
best et 11.48

Re: What will it run? 440 - 04/02/11 01:01 PM

I might have the best car here to compare yours to. My Valiant with an aluminum head 360/727 and 8 3/4 weighed 2,940 without me. With an iron head 440/727 and Dana it weighs 3160 without me. The 8 3/4 had drums, the Dana has discs.

The 440 is a stock '78 short block with unported 906's milled to 80cc. It's got a .557 solid, M1 and a 950HP. I've had a Holley SD and a Torker II on it and there isn't much difference in ET on MY car. They were all within a tenth, all with the same 4 hole spacer. No mods done to any of them either. It runs the best shifting at 5,500. I tried all the way to 6,500 and it didn't make a difference. This certainly isn't the best combination of parts, but it was built years ago on a budget, lol.

It's got a 4500 stall converter, 4.10 gears and a 28" Hoosier QTP. It has gone a best of 11.49/7.20(not on the same pass). It seems to be better in the 8th than the quarter for what it is.

I've been told it would go quicker with a 509 cam. If you go that route, find an older used one that was broke in right. The new ones suck. I had one wipe out a lobe after only 8 miles on it!

Hope this helps some

Re: What will it run? 440 - 04/02/11 03:10 PM

I ran a stock 1974 440 with 509 cam 1 3/4 headers torker intake with 750 holley vac secondary carb. In 3250 lb car ran 12.10 @112 with 4.10 gear 27" Hoosier QT's 727 with junk 3000 stall converter. Not an optimal combo but it worked just fine. Good luck tuning tuning tuning is key. After you settle on the combo find out what it likes carb, timing etc.

Getcha a bottle & drop it on, there will be no more second guessing if it'll run 7.8s in the 1/8 .

I'm probably going to stick with the 727 for awhile, I don't want to track down another BB ultra bell after trading mine for a SB one...again
