Max Power Turbo 440 Block - 03/29/11 02:57 PM

WHat is the max power that anyone has gotten from a factory 440 block that was turbocharged? What did you do to help it live? Main studs? Sleeves? Aluminum man caps? Girdle? Was it still streetable? Would a 400 block be better suited for a streetable turbocharged application? How much boost?

400 block would be better IMO. Mine has Indy alum. caps, hughes girdle, alum. rods. I think rpm, and detonation are what kill blocks not the power. (I'm sure they have a limit but I have not reached it yet) I have made hundreds of passes with this block with 300hp of nitrous and 30-35 passes with 15-16 lbs with turbo, and have just a few weeks ago made about 10 dyno pulls with 25 lbs with my 101mm.

True Dat. And a quote from the Turboforums -
'Everybody blows up their first turbo engine'. Take that FWIW.

You can make LOTS of power with a stock 440 block on three conditions:
1) keep rpm low
2) avoid detonation at all cost
3) take care of the equipment

Hey feets,

So a 9:1 compression, air to air intercooled 505 CID , S400 Borg Warner 75mm or 80mm, living under 6,100 RPM could be a good start?

No worries on that with a single S400 you will be lucky to find the limits of the block. A 505 really should have twins unless you want 800 hp at 4800 RPM.

Would the lower peak RPM horsepower numbers from the single turbo 505 benefit me with 3.23 rear gears at the dragstrip?

The larger turbo will make more power and be more detonation resistant. The small turbo will be out of it's efficiency range and will heat the air excessively. The intercooler will only cool so much.
A larger turbo with the impeller to handle that size engine won't make as much heat.

I have been looking at the Borg S400 series of turbo. I spoke with a guy at Majestic Turbo in TX said would be a good place to start. Seems to be a bigger poplular turbo. I imagine an Air to Air intercooler would ward off detonation as well...

SOO, how much compression can you get away with on pump gas? Seems 9.5:1 is about it..

93 octane around here.

Majestic is local to me. I've been dealing with those guys since 2001. They have always treated me well.

9.5 is getting a little high for a turbo car. It can be done but I prefer to stay between 8.5 and 9.
