I've always preferred E and A bodies, but how often do you see a 1968 Dodge Charger running in the Stock or Super Stock classes? It's just plain cool! Car qualified with a 10.207 at a recent NHRA divisional race in Texas.

Did they take some HP away from the late '60's 383 and 440 combos? Seems like a lot of them turning up lately.

That's the only pic that I know of.
They seem to have kept things "correct" for a '68 RT by running a 440 4 barrel. Lighter 440-6 E-bodies run around SS/FA and this is heavier and rated at less HP. Without checking NHRA weights and HP factors, I'd be surprised if it's a 383.

It runs good, but isn't one of the faster cars in SS/HA. There are several well into the 9's.

I was there and got to see that car up close this weekend. It is VERY pretty. There were a lot of beautiful cars in Houston. That green Challenger is awesome and the Candies new Challenger is to die for. I want that color on my old Challenger.

Dumb question but what exactly makes an SS/HA car?

NHRA rules NHRA SS classes are based on factory HP per pounds of weight, then NHRA factors the factory HP to suit the needs of the politically correct(GM racers usually ) racers that cry about thier competitors ability to outrun them Go to NHRA web site and look up the classs factor for that class and then look up the 1968 Dodge cars and motor combinations I'll bet that the motor is a 440 Magnum rated at or near 375 HP The body style and trim packages make the car fit a certian class, for instance a non RT Charger with a 440 Magnum may fit a higher class (SS/HA or SS/GA) than the RT does(SS/HA or SS/JA) IHTHs

Nuther dumb question, whats the fastest 383 charger stock combo, if anyone has ever run one?.....

Re: 1968 Charger SS/HA - 03/08/11 07:44 PM

Fascinating combo, and with all the nose weight the Charger grille adds, that thing's makin' some steam to pitch-rotate as well as it does, unless there's a buttload of ballast in the tail. Might actually be carrying some weight to drop it into H if it's a 440.

Re: 1968 Charger SS/HA - 03/08/11 08:08 PM

What other brand X cars would run in that class?
Posted By: mbogina

Re: 1968 Charger SS/HA - 03/08/11 08:33 PM

NHRA has the 440 derated to 356HP. SS/HA is 9.5 lb/factored HP, minimum race weight 3382 plus 170 for driver, 3552 total. To run 10.2 at that weight in average/decent air requires about 650 dyno HP.

at that same race one of the fastest ss/ha cars was there,, ran 9.74 with a 68 dart 383 bill gibbs

Yeah, that Charger looks great, and I made it my new background last night. Just now, my 8 year old daughter got off the laptop and came out in the living room and said, "Dad, you have an awesome new computer screen."

I saw the car in Houston. It's a real R/T. One of the guys with the car said it was a show car converted to a race car. It's mini-tubbed with Cal-tracs.

Re: 1968 Charger SS/HA - 03/09/11 04:09 PM

Yhe car is a 440/375. NHRA rated at 356. 10.5 lbs/HP in H puts it at 3908lbs. Not a competitive package but a real cool car.
Posted By: mbogina

Re: 1968 Charger SS/HA - 03/09/11 05:11 PM

SS/H is 9.5 lbs/factered HP, not 10.5, I is 10.0, J is 11.0. The 440 combo is limited by the carb and head castings a bit more than the 383. The 383 is an overall faster combo, de-factored to around 300HP. The Charger in question is a cool car and looks like a fun ride, hope he has great success with it.

Re: 1968 Charger SS/HA - 03/09/11 06:34 PM

Not to argue but that Charger has a factor of 10.23 as of today. That makes it a natural G car. So moving it up to 10.5 makes it an H car. In Stock it is a natural E car.

Re: 1968 Charger SS/HA - 03/09/11 07:48 PM

10-1 lb weight break makes it a SS/I.
A-6
C-7
E-8
G-9
I-10
After that they go to 1lb breaks.

I was a digit off. Most appologetic. Been spending too much time in Stock. Still a heavy car for any class.

Re: 1968 Charger SS/HA - 03/09/11 08:39 PM

What do have for a stocker? We've got a couple from different brands.
Yeah, that's what my heavy turd Olds superstocker weighs. But, at least they have another 130+ci's to get theirs moving. Defineately a cool car for the class though.

We have a 73 Dart Sport 340 H/S and a 70 Duster 340 F/SA. Been involved in class racing since the late 70's. It sure has changed but we still have fun with it. What class is your Olds?

Re: 1968 Charger SS/HA - 03/09/11 10:11 PM

We've got a pair of 88 cutlass' that run in SS/M-NA. I'm finishing a 72 Nova for G-H/SA.
My father has been running class cars since 67. He's also got a 71 Boss 351 that we occasionally run D/S and a 64 chevelle wagon that's a SS/NA as well.
I've got a 63 Belvedere post car that I occasionally drive. I'd love to have another to make a stocker out of but I can't afford to keep in A especially with the new cars. Love the people and the cars but we've been staying close to home as the economy and NHRA have made it a little less enjoyable.

Another dumb question? What are those two brackets hanging down from the rear axle visible under the car? I've seen similar brackets before, but always thought they were wheelie bar mounts with the bars removed. But, those don't look wheelie bar mounts. Thanks!
