64 Dodge -727 cooling question - 02/09/11 10:28 PM

I have some questions about cooling a 727 transmission. I’m currently running my cooling lines through the radiator then though a Derale 10x12 cooler that has a 650 cfm fan mounted on it. The cooler currently is mounted off to the right side of the radiator.

I’d like to move the cooler to the underside of the car somewhere. When and if I move it,do you think I still need to have the lines go through the radiator Is the 10x12 Derale with the fan enough to cool the trans by itself Where do you guys mount them under the car I’m currently running a 9 ½ convertor that stalls at 4400rpm (Maybe upgrade to an 8in someday). The car sees less then 500 street miles per year.

I don't know, but I had the same idea. Keep us posted if you find a good spot.

I have mine bolted in under the floor right above my rear. Inside of the frame rails close to the pass side. B&M Super Cooler.
Seems to work fine up here in Oregon at the strip and on the street - 5600 PTC converter in a CRT trans. I do not go through the radiator at all.

Put a trans. temperature gauge in the trans pan and watch it, you may be able remove the after marke cooler and not need it I've ran a 10 inch 4300 RPM stall converter, a 8 inch 5200 RPM stall converter and a nine inch 4800 RPM stall converter in my pump gas street car that has ran 10:30s at 128+ MPH cork up with the nine inch. None of them ran more than 200 F on the street using a small three row cheap aluminum tubular after market cooler My radiator does not have a built in trans cooler(more likely a heater ) actually, if it did I would run it and see if it would keep the trans temps under 250F, if it did I would use that only

What`s the temp now? I mounted my plate type b&m cooler on the lower valance behind my ft. lic. plate which gets plenty of air and even w/an 8" 5000+ vert, it never sees above 170.

x 2 .. on putting a trans-temp gauge somewhere in the combo.

Having TWO coolers in the line ...can cool the ATF tooooo much and kill some of the stall-speed.

OK for a RV or a tow-rig ... not-so-good for a racer.
