To lock out my distributor or not? Mallory unit

To lock out my distributor or not? Mallory unit - 02/02/11 06:42 PM

I have a Mallory built MP vacuum advance distributor in my 340. I want to re-curve it this off season as out of the box it has a huge total advance sweep of 28 degrees. I am looking into buying the Mallory kit that comes with springs and a set of advance limit gauges. I plan on installing a NOS Sniper system either this season or next and was recommended to lock my timing in at 20 degrees while on the spray. The motor is 10.5:1 compression with iron heads and runs on pump 93. Should I just go ahead and lock my timing in now or wait until I get the kit? If I lock it out, could I have issues with detonation? I just want some insight. I could just experiment with it but can't drive it here in Michigan for a couple of months so figured I would ask.

P.S. Here is my cam spec if it helps any cam spec

Correct, I would be adjusting the timing at the race track when I use the kit. Probably will get a MSD timing control and 6AL when I get the kit so I can adjust the timing a little easier.

Maybe just get one of these even Mallory Hyfire

if you are considering adding any type contoller
I would wait until I decided to add the spray.
With technology advancing so quickly these days it might be advantageous
