Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 01/27/11 07:02 AM

Just testing the water here. Everyone on this board really likes to get some good techinical info from experts like Ryan J. I think I have a representative from AFCO that is willing to post and monitor a thread just for shock technology and to do a Q&A for all of us. If you are interested in seeing this let me know by posting back here and I will make it happen. If it goes well, we may have something to put in our tech archives.

This will be a thread on here so you will be able to ask any question you want. Obviously its not all drag racing on here so you will be able to throw out your road track stuff too.
Well it certainly looks like we have enough interest. My guy is liking the idea. He is on the road this week and we are gonna try to get this on here in the next couple weeks. He wants to do at least a week worth where he would check the thread several times a day to answer questions. Next step is making it happen. I'm on it

Re: Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 01/29/11 03:47 PM

I'll start it off!
I have Afco double adjustables on all four corners. Great shocks, looking to get the most out of them. I have the car in the sig obviously, 3000 lbs, ladder bars 30 inches long, leave off trans brake. The weight dist is now 47.5 rear 52.5 front. I have started testing with the rears soft on extension, medium on compression and have progressed to about the middle of their adjustment for stiffness, seems to be about right as the 60 fts went from 1.28 down to 1.259 and got very consistent. Fronts are still dead soft on extension , fairly stiff on compression to help with the landing.
Where would you go from here? The car wheelstands and hits the 66 inch wheelie bars fairly hard. I have about four inches of travel up front.

what type of suspension? an anti-roll system would do the trick.

it a ladder bar car single adj coil over set at l.h 3 clicks r.h.4 and no anti roll.

On a ladder bar car if its leaning over to the right
something is flexing or bending... yes a anti roll
bar will cover it up

Re: Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 02/15/11 02:56 AM

Some shock tech would be great. I to went to a Dave Morgan Seminar this past year. He prefers the Afco shock as well.

Unfortunately I have and F body, which means no one makes a good adjustable front shock for the car. So, I am still running the shocks the car came off the manufacturing line back in 76. haha. Might just have to retro-fit a shock in the front. if this is the case, I wonder which shock would be the winner. I am sold on the Afco's, just need one that will fit.

I dont want to cover up. I dont see any bending or frame flexing . what area should i look. i was thinking a bad shock ?

Re: Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 02/18/11 02:17 PM

i am all ears
i road raced motor cycyles in the early 90s
it was all about shocks(springs-tires ect)..we had to change the settings all the time.. for yrs.. you learn a few things...lol..
when they where right..things rocked.....
i am anxious to hear what's changed in 20 yrs.lol

i would start by establishing a language
or definition..of terms..so those that follow can well.....follow..
ive often helped guys..and often stuff gets lost in translation..they dont know the correct terms its hard enough in person much less over a keyboard....lol...
just as an example as to what Iam talking about.

Ive always been taught that
"Compression" is the term for the stroke that closes the shock-the direction that shortens the distance.

Rebound is the term used to describe the shock as it extends. the direction the lenghtens the distance.
hysteresis the rebounding of material after its unloaded.the opposing energy/reaction.

i have to get to work..right now..but I Recomend that...when the shock guy comes on..
can you establish what words/terms you use to describe the action of the shocks..so guys dont get confused..and can follow you...
ect..

Re: Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 02/18/11 07:22 PM

I, too, have a motorcycle suspension background, only with motocross. The sort of things I think people need to understand when it comes to shock tuning might get deeper than the typical range of adjustments I see offered for sportsman-level suspension components. Stuff that comes to mind includes...

Compression
- Low-speed circuit
- High-speed circuit
- Common characteristics applicable for Off The Shelf (OTS) dampers
- What the "ideal" compression curve(s) would be for different types of applications

Rebound
- Low-speed circuit
- High-speed circuit
- Common characteristics applicable for Off The Shelf (OTS) dampers
- What the "ideal" rebound curve(s) would be for different types of applications

Tuning high- and low-speed circuits independently
- External adjustments (a.k.a. "clickers")
- Internal adjustments (a.k.a. re-valving)

Static / loaded ride heights

When you want more travel vs. when you want to limit it

Understanding how spring rate needs to considered separately from damper settings

Difference in suspension behavior when using softer spring rates with more preload, rather than stiffer spring rates with less preload

Well, it's a start.

The height of the front mount if too low will really aggravate body roll. My chassis is way overbuilt, and no flex, so that is not the problem. An anti roll will redirect the forces created and straighten you right out. I picked up .02 to .03 in 60 ft with the addition of my anti roll. Look at this before pic. The body roll got out of control when I went to the bottom hole in the ladderbar mount. My interpritation of what happens is with the bars so close to the neutral line the normal forces of body roll from engine torque have no counter acting force from the ladderbars, till body roll happens. Then the left bar being higher gains leverage, and the situation spirals out of control till the shocks or limiters take over. This all depends on how fast the car is. I have gone from 10.30s with this car to 8.70s, and the roll problem showed up when I hit the tires harder in the low nines. A stick car will hit pretty hard, so I am thinking it can start earlier.

Re: Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 02/18/11 09:17 PM

Hi everyone!

As per Eric's (Irun6snd8th) posts, I have been traveling alot recently, trying to get caught up and not making much progress but let's kick this off officially on Monday, 2/21. Here is some random thoughts; I believe everyone on forums like this one are extremely passionate. Everyone has something to contribute to the threads. (with the exception of Josh King!!! ) Ha-Got you back!

Also, I don't consider myself an absolute expert. I happen to work at a company that pays me to and expects me to focus on suspension, (shocks & springs), cooling and related items to cars. I have been here for over 17 years working with circle track applications, street rods, pro touring/street machines and also drag cars. I have 21 years of drag racing myself but, I realize that all this and .75 will get me a Coke at the vending machine out back. LOL

So, let me suggest that we have fun and get some good conversation going. Also, I have given many seminars over the years (that were not a 1 hour infomercial), I don't intend for this thread to be a running advertisement for the company I work for. I spend a considerable amount of time daily working tech with guys that have various brands of shocks etc. Never will I say that I cannot answer a question because the car has the wrong brand of XXX on it.

So, I am glad to be here and happy to hang the bullseye on my back for a while, anyway. Remember, if the tech tips we discuss don't produce the results we expected, we try again. I can be very hard headed!!!

Eric

Re: Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 02/18/11 09:41 PM

FINALLY!

I think that what most members would need (for starters) including myself is the basics, what one would strive (sp) for in shock tech.
For example, my car does this, what would be the first thing to do to make it do this or that?

Re: Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 02/18/11 09:55 PM

SSHemi,

Makes sense to me....we can start with an existing condition and explore some ideas/suggestions....or, we can start with this one and build from here.

Here is a common one. "My car seems to do a hook/spin deal or something....My 60' times aren't as consistent as desired"

Thinking about shocks, what do we think we would want to do?
Posted By: Quicktree

Re: Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 02/18/11 10:20 PM

welcome why don't you start a new thread so we can keep up from the beginning. and start with the technology between the different types of shocks and how they work.
Posted By: sshemi

Re: Anyone interested in some shock tech discussion? - 02/18/11 10:37 PM

One condition that seems to be popular here is when the car hooks then spin, or rear tire wadds (sp) really bad too hard hit?

I agree start a new thread.
