Mini Starter question....

Mini Starter question.... - 01/17/11 11:52 PM

My mini starter has a bolt directly on top(pic below)of the pinion gear housing (i think that's what you would call it).

With my 904 trans this bolt boss is hitting the block. Are there any mini starters that don't have the bolt here?

Are you refering to the wiring adapter?

If so just remove the plastic cover and take it off. Then bolt the wires right to that spot.

They hit most any engines...
Take that adapter and ext off and you should be golden.

I'd slice it down with s cutoff wheel. its been a problem with alot of mega blocks. you'll be fine. I have been doing it that way for years.

I'm talking about the bolt boss, that is right in line with the big stud on the electrical connection.

I'll try to draw on the pic an repost....

How much interference does it have Jessie? If its not much, can you either grind the head of the bolt down some, or relieve the block or both? If its hitting on the side of the bolt head, maybe replace the bolt with 12 point head bolt?

Jesse,

Now that I see what you were talking about in the pm and here. knock that boss down as far as you can. Leave some meat on there for the bolt thread strength.

X2

if you don't do the block, when you need to replace the starter at the track your day will be done.

I ended up grinding a groove in the block. The little bit that I could grind off the starter wouldn't have been enough. Now i just hope I ground out enough. I guess I'll find out once the trans is in.

I mocked the trans up on a different block I had and made some templates to lay out some marks on the engine in the car. So hopefully it's right on. i ground a little extra for good measure

Haven't you got the car together or did the new trans break? Springs coming, you don't have time to waste, the ice won't wait for ya.

The way understand it, you only need these things if you remove over 50% of the firewall....

On all cars requiring a roll cage, if the OEM firewall has been
modified ( in excess of 1 square foot for transmission removal, not
including bolted in components) a lower windshield or dash bar of 1
1/4 x .058-inch 4130 chromoly or 1 1/4 x .118-inch mild steel is
mandatory connecting the forward cage supports
