Yup!!
383 that I had was cracked so I went with a 1975 400 Bored .060. No worries, the machinist sonic checked all the cylinders and all after the final hone was over 100. Excellent block due to NO core shift!! Seems to be more beef in it.
Diamond Racing pistons from a fellow member here includes pins, locks and moly rings. Eagle ESP H-beam forged rods(stock length). Stock 1965 383 forged steel crank. Steel main girdle from 440 source(block line honed with girdle installed). Clevite77 hp series main & rod inserts. Scott Brown cam with a 545 lift 240 dur @ .50 and 112 lobe seperation(Scott said it would be a good fit). 906 heads mildly ported(Will get the Eddy's later) with 2.14 int 1.88 exh valves, hyd lifters.
383 torker with holley 850 setup as a blow-thru... Rear power valve will be boost referenced per Holley. Per their website.
Turbo is a Borg/Warner T6 S480 80mm with the upgraded 1.10 A/R exh housing and .83 wheel to spool faster. Good for 1050 HP. After all the research this is what I and the turbo builder decided on using. Should be well into boost at 2800rpm up to 6200. 5" DP down to the bellhousing area and split to two 3.5" pipes and race bullits out to the back.
50mm Godspeed blow-off valve and 50mm Godspeed wastegate. All the hotside piping is 3" mandrel bent pipe. I am building the Log headers right now which are 1 7/8" primary into the 3" log. Cold side is 3" aluminum out of the turbo into a 31"x11"x3" intercooler into a 4" bonnet.
Fuel system is Aeromotive A1000 pump, A1000 boost reference requlator and Aeromotive Pump controller. All -8an from sump(stock tank is new) to regulator then -6an to the carb.
MSD 6AL pigged with the MSD Boost Master retarder.
It's a shame that I had to cut the inner fender but at least I wasn't the first. Had fenderwell headers at one time and the holes were patched. No big deal!! AMD makes them, LoL!
Running this all through a 833 4 speed. 3.55's are in the 8 3/4 but I will be changing them to 2.73's. Turbos like "Load"...
My pops is building a "Beefy" set of Home built Cal-tracs. Nice setup!!
Should be making 800-850 Hp at 8-10 lbs boost, If I decide to turn up the wick it should see 1000+ at 14-16 lbs. I highly doubt there will be a need for that! LoL!!
I sure hope it turns out to be the beast that was figured on paper!!
Oh by the way,
Its a Street car! !

Sounds like a good build!
However, if you could use the room, 5" DP is wayyyy over kill. 4" is plenty.
EDIT: I read your link to get the info I was questioning...

Yeah,
I had questioned why on TTF and I was told that if it was meant to have a 4" the flange would have been 4"...
Before all is said and done I more than likely will need to convert from the Holley to MSII. Its a real PITA to tune a blow-thru carb. This was supposed to be a budget build. Already over $5000.. If it weren't for the total suspension rebuild due to the disc brake conversion I would be well under the budget. Buuuut, I prefer a good foundation for what I expect from this setup and want to be able to stop! LoL! When I get it running I plan on taking it out to Sealy and see what she does.

When building your manifolds keep the log no larger than necessary. When a small primary dumps into the big pipe velocity will drop. A 3" log may be a bit large.

Yeah,
I have been asking the same question about using the 3" for the entire hot side and was assured it would be fine. My pops and I were throwing around words about the velocity being affected.
I was thinking that since it had a bottleneck at the T6 flange the velocity would be increased due to that .

I disagree, I logged back pressure and seen a near 1:1 ratio with my s475/5inch down pipe.... It's all about pressure differential....

This is basically what I was told,
All else being equal, _The amount of work that can be done across an exhaust turbine is determined by the pressure differential at the inlet and outlet_ (in English, raise the turbo inlet pressure, lower the outlet pressure, or both, and you make more power) Pressure is heat, heat is pressure.
Raising the inlet pressure is possible, but tough. Lowering the outlet pressure is easy - just bolt on a bigger, free flowing exhaust. I've seen a couple of posts from people who added aftermarket exhausts, who report "my turbo spools up faster now" Well, that's because by lowering the outlet pressure, you increased the pressure differential, and now the exhaust gas can expand more, and do more work. That increased work pushes harder on your turbo, and it spools up faster. You should also see less boost drop at redline, because if an exhaust system is flow-limited, once you pass the flow limit of the system, any additional gasses you try and force through it only raise the outlet pressure. Higher outlet pressure, lower pressure differential, less work, less boost.
[Note that the compressor side comes into play here too - that's another story]

Make the exhaust no larger than the turbine inliet flange. It will reduce turbulence in the manifolds.

The inner opening of the flange is quite a bit larger than the 3" pipe that I am using. The two 3" pipes merge just below this flange. The right side exhaust log/header will be quite a mess but is needed due to the spark plug configuration. Left side will be pretty easy.

Got a half a day in these. They ain't very pretty but I think they will do the job. I was concerned about the top pipes angle into the log but it is what it is!! That very first hole may be an issue too. But it will all fit under the stock hood, even with the 5" DP. I can get to all the header nuts and sparkplugs either from the bottom or through holes in the apron. Still need a bit more time in the square end at the flange.
Anyhow here are a few pics of the pipeline facility!!

It is .067 Aluminized exhaust pipe. I wouldn't think it should burn through. I will be coating them and then wrapping them with DEI wrap and silicone.
The header kit came from JEGS and is the same type piping. Who knows!! It might burn through.

Yeah,I was looking at your photos and couldn't see any brackets. Are you turbo's hangin' off the headers?
I thought about the cracking issue and my pops and I fabbed a bracket to hold the weight of the turbo. It is mounted to the head so it will move with the engine. Less stress on the pipe. I have a tiny bit of front to rear movement but I figured that the headers would stabilize that. We are adding a few brackets here and there for additional support of the larger/longer header tubes on the passenger side where the turbo is. The driver side won't have all the additional piping. Just 90's into the log.

Very cool & your build has me thinking of changing my desire to procharge my 68 383 formula S, to twin turbo. But I'm concerned about the high underhood temps the turbo generates. How do you prevent the extreme heat from cracking your hood paint, since its so close to the hood? The turbo on my 99 Eclipse GST gets pretty hot, but its location isn't so close to the hood as yours. I like the idea of a turbo producing max torque sooner in the rev band & getting better mileage than the procharger.

All the hotside piping will be coated with VHT and then wrapped with DEI kevlar header wrap with a good coat of their black spray silicone.
I will only wrap the first 2 feet of the 5" DP just to keep those temps out too. You thinking twins, go over to FABO's site and and look at MadDart's twin turbo Dart build. He's done a great job with the attention to detail. LONG read though but thorough!!
Going twins will make it easy for the hotside since all you need is a log style like the driverside on my setup for both on yours. I thought about twins but that was twice the price and I am on a "Strict" budget.
I will also add the hood insulation to protect the paint.

Thanks for the info & I'll check out maddart's post. know Ceramic coating & thermal barrier coating really reduces temps & when I had Ram Proline do my hemi's exhaust, it cooled the underside of my chally pretty well. I'll also friction coat the piston skirts & maybe thermal coat the tops & chambers, as I hear that really reduces detonation. Thanks for the great info. Buzz.

I read MadDart's post on FABO & very cool. I've also got Caltracs & 5" narrowed 8 3/4 w/ 3.55's. I forgot to mention my 68 S has fiberglass fenders & hood, so I gotta keep the exhaust temps down for sure. the 451 has eddy heads, TM6 intake, 440 source kit & is about 10:1, so I'll swap the pistons for 8:1 or 8.5:1 coated ones & the Engle hyd cam has a 112 lobe sep so maybe it'll be ok. I think its an AMC K57/58 grind or a K56/58. Twin turbos would look awesome.

Yeah, I went to 9:1 due to the cam choice. Depending on the head gasket it will drop a point or two. 8.5 is ideal in most circumstances. I have found that less duration(2.30ish) and more lobe seperation(114-116) is ideal but I am no expert. I think as long as you get the hotside coated and wrapped there will be no issues with heat. I would also look into a 2.91-3.23 gear depending on what size the rear tires are. This will help with the fuel economy and put a ton of "Load" on the turbo(s).

I've got 3.15/50 x 15 ET Streets for the back & they're pretty tall, so maybe the 3.55's will be close to 3.23's. I may have to narrow a Dana I have to handle the torque, but will try the 8 3/4 first. Thanks for the info & glad heat won't be an issue.

Got most of the right side done. Coatings Suck!! A Royal "PITA".... I suppose it will work. Next time I'll get a Hemi and I won't have to worry about spark plugs
Guess I'll take the hotside to my buddies and wash those welds with a TIG and get them blasted. I have VHT in flat black then they will be wrapped as stated before.

Its gotta support the center hood support as well. The cold side is gonna need some welding, I don't have a tig .. Gonna have to pay for that.

Wow!! Hotside is done!! I will have to do a little hammer & dollying to the lower radiator support to straighten out where I rolled the lip. Now I need to figure out how to mount the wastegate. I am going to put it into the merge just below the T6 flange.
Now I have a question,
I am screwed as to where I wanted to put it in the prior pics. Can I 90* off the flange/merge area or does the exhaust have to flow directly into the wastegate?

It's best to have it in a natural flow pattern but it will still work pointed off in some funky direction.

I guess the only Bad would be the performance of the Hallman manual boost controller eh? Wouldn't be as accurate I guess.

Gotta pic?
Mine is a 60mm with a 7lb spring. I tested it to 30 p.s.i. with the Hallman MBC from around 5 lbs to 30.. Mine will 90 off the merge pipe and turn a gradual 90 to the wastegate. Right where the alternator goes.

Cool!
That is about the only place I could put it without adding alot more pipe.
Notice you have wrap! I am wondering how well it works???
I bought the DEI Titanium wrap with the black silicone spray. Hopefully 100 feet of the 2" will cover my hotside and dp.
Still waiting on rods so I unboxed the new gas tank and started cutting 2" holes for the sump. Should get that done in the morning. Then I will start running the fuel line and install the A1000 and filter. THEN, I need to figure out where all the msd stuff is gonna go as well as the Aeromotive pump controller.

I used it more or less to keep heat off of surrounding items (fan, rad. hose, etc.). Works great for that. I was hoodless last year, but I can tell it will definatly keep under hood temps down. Only have it on my crossover now, may wrap my headers and d.p. after I get the hood on.

I am soooo BENT right now!! I ordered stock length rods in November 2010 for a 383.
Well,
I checked status on my Eagle rods and this is the crap I hear.
I just spoke with Eagle again, they are saying its going to be 90-110 days until those are ready to ship. The reason being they only make "enough" for a year since they are not in high demand, and at this point they are sold out and the next batch will be ready in the 100 days or so.
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!

Especially when Eagle is in NO hurry to produce them. O'yeah, its QQ1 Blue. Its several shades darker than B5. Someone painted the engine bay with B5 too.
The worst part is that while I was waiting on sheetmetal parts I entended on having the new turbo setup done. Wow, guess that won't happen either.
AMD was supposed to have the lower 1/4 patches and trunk extensions by early spring but that has since been postponed to late summer.
AAAAARRRRGGGGG!!!!!!
The only GOOD thing is the Cuda is paid for as well as the shop it sits in.

Eagle emailed me today and confirmed "Earlier" this week management "Discontinued" the rod that I purchased last year and have been waiting for.
Don't buy them cause they aren't available anymore.
So much for satisfied customers!

Some pics of progress. Intercooler upper bracket fabbed ready to paint. REAL TIGHT but no touchy anywhere. Work'n on the lower bracket now. Had to enlarge the hole in the radiator support a bit. Will hammer & dolly around the hole to straighten it up before repainting. Also got the sump in and tank mounted. Now gotta figure out where the fuel pump and filter go. Since the hotside is on the passenger side I will run it up the driverside.

Got a call from the machinist Friday telling me my 400 was done. Went Saturday to pick it up and after it was loaded in the truck I noticed that the stock main bolts were in it?? Of course the owner of the machine shop was in Dallas racing so no one to gripe at. After I tore the bag open then is when I seen that the mains had NOT been line-honed nor was my girdle fitted. S^O^B!!!!
I am speechless!!

I'm tempted!
This was supposed to be a good Mopar machinist!? I used to use Westside machine until they cut 2 brand new custom Arias pistons wrong due to the fact they didn't pay attention to how the other pistons were cut for balancing and fittement into the heads combustion chamber.
I miss the "GOOD" machinists!! There are 2 more precision machinist left here so I will be taking the crank. rods and pistons to him to get them balanced and recheck all machine work on the 400 block.

Not much to update but,
I picked up a set of L19 Rod bolts for the Eagle rods. Had to call the machinist today since I haven't heard from them in a week. Supposed to be ready Wednesday?? I need to finish the DP where it splits to duals then I can send them to the blasters. Got the front half of the fuel system done to the firewall. Need 4 6an 90's to get it to the carb..
Hopefully I can find a reputable machinist close to finalize the balancing of the rotating assy. and can get started with the engine build.
I might be coming to the downhill side of this! Yippeeee!
STAY TUNED!!!!! MORE TO COME!!

I have a stick of heavy 3/4" square stock. Gonna weld that along the top cut and tie a piece of 1/4" flat plate rolled to form the curved recess for the dp from it to the shock mount.cShould be stronger than the sheetmetal that was there. I think the panel will be held in with zus fasteners for easy access to the turbo and plugs. This will do until the cage can be fabbed.

If you are talking abot the bonnett and cold side piping,
I got the bonnett off ebay which it is a Spectre piece and the piping come with the intercooler and it too is from ebay. I had to send the intercooler out for the right side tank to be cut off and flipped to allow the flange to be at the bottom.

Well,
after all the prep on the pistons I got the coating sprayed on and baked them for an hour after initial temp was 300 in the piston. Obviously I got it too thick on the first piston and it bit me! Will have to redo it. The rest look good. After I redo the first piston I still need to burnish them with white scotchbrite.

Re: 68 383 Formula S now 411" B with Borg/Warner S480 - 05/05/11 12:58 AM
Well,
After a few hours and a botched attempt at getting the 5" dp done it is hanging on the wall. I ordered a few 45 and 90 4" mandrels and gonna run them to the rearend and split them to two 3" out the back for now. I can use the 5" at the track.
I got the rotating assembly yesterday and ordered the main & rod inserts. Should be here Friday. Called Kevin at Total seal and found that the ring pack that come with the Diamond pistons aren't correct for my application. They are the CR series File-fit moly and he stated that I should have gotten the CS or MS series. I am waiting on a response from my vendor. Hopefully they will take these back and supply me with the correct ring pack.
I have been trying to trade a C6 race prepped w/trans-brake for a C4 for my wifes 66 altered Muttstang. I think it may be in my best interests to keep it and chop the bellhousing off and get a JW bellhousing for bigblock Mopar. Put it in the Cuda. The C6 is waaaay stronger than the 727!!
I have come to a point where interest is about to be lost. BIG OL' MONEY HOLE! I have dropped nearly $8000 on this turbo thing. I could have completed the entire Body and Interior for that and freshened the 440. O'well, I'm neck deep now! LoL! Gotta get a few more side jobs to complete this thing.
I hope to have the engine running by next week at least. I will run it for a while until its broke in and then I will install the turbo and get some videos posted. Body is still in Bare metal. I have a little bodywork to do then I can get it sealed before I take a ride in it. Gotta put the doors back on too!

5" to two 3" passenger side. I tacked it in place and pulled it out and final welded all the seams and "Dammit" the front one that goes under the oil pan moved rearward. Gotta notch it and bend it back where it was to begin with. Decided to go with what I had instead of the 4".

Finally got a straight answer from Total Seal.
.024 top and .024 bottom and .015 oil ring gaps. Stuck all the top rings in the cylinders and I have an untouched gap of .028 for the top???? So don't need to file the top rings. Now for the second ring. they are tight so they will need to be filed. Question is, do I file to .024 or file them the same as the top ring of .028????

Too darn hot here to do much of anything. 104 for the last few days and 103 thru the weekend. Been breaking heat records for a month too. Then add the humidity! My metal shop is a furnace in the worst way. No rain in months.
Engine is complete and sitting in the car but it has to come back out so I can wrap the headers and make my plug wires. My pops dropped it in cause he needed the picker. Put a new throwout bearing in the trans and changed lube, its ready to go back in. I have a few days in the fuel system that needs to be finished and then the 2 MSD boxes, A1000 fuel pump and the Aeromotive pump controller have to be wired up. Then all the boost signal lines. I am hesitant to run it until I can purchase a Innovative afr/wideband setup.
Just need it to cool down a bit so I can get back to tinkering with it.

Only 19 days? DFW is approaching 40 consecutive days over 100 degrees.
I haven't made any progress on the hot rod either.

Ok,
engine is in. Real tight with the plugs/wires installed. I am wondering how well this wrap is gonna work or if I should get something to cover the wires.
Gotta get the trans cleaned up and repainted before I put it back in. Here is a few pick of the progress, not much but something!! I ran out of wrap but the driverside will be easy to wrap on the car.

Got a little more done today. Alternator has been relocated and fits real good if I might say! Belt lines up good just need to get one about three inches shorter. Need to get the alternator wires out of the factory loom and rerun those to the driverside. Still gotta finish the plug wires since everything is in place. Starting to look pretty good! I have a fan shroud but can't put my hands on it at the moment so the fan will wait. I think the 850 Holley is too big so waiting on a 750 main body then can start the "Hanger 18" mods. Then the worst part, Electronics need to be wired up as well as the fuel pump and fuel lines.
Soooon I hope!

Re: 68 383 Formula S now 411" B with Borg/Warner S480 - 10/04/11 04:23 AM
I just got a wrench thrown into my plans.......... My good friend was over today and seen my 4 speed sitting on my roll-around.
He said,
You wanna 727 with reverse manual and a small stall???
I know its probably the right thing to install the 727.
But I sold my pristine auto console and shifter a while back to a guy in California and I have this huge 4 speed hump in my floor(was like that when I got it)..
NOW WHAT DO I DO?????????????
Any opinions??? I know it would be better for the turbo as far as keeping it under LOAD!
ARRRGGG!

Yeah,
the 440 six pack did a job on the 10.5" McLeod disc on its own and it is 350 hp less.
I am thinking about getting that $899 dual disk McLeod setup if I choose to keep the 4 speed.

Re: 68 383 Formula S now 411" B with Borg/Warner S480 - 10/21/11 04:02 AM
Sorry folks!!
I was convinced to go with the full manual auto. I traded the 4 speed for the 727 with a bolt in sprag, reverse manual valvebody, red kevlar clutches and a 2800 stall. I know the 4 speed would have been a blast on the street but I have a few friends with their mid to high 6 second 8th S10's and Luv trucks that need their asses cracked by my streetcar!
I still think it will be just as much fun with the auto!

Well,
I am waiting on the 727 so I got the body in epoxy sealer and started cleaning up the dash. Got it painted black and detailed the cluster bezel. Shot it with Mirrachrome paint and detailed the black and silver areas. Also polished the lenses. Looks good for now. I need to find a better bezel and spend a bit more time on it since this one had alot of dings, nicks, scratches and cracks. I also used the Whitegauges.com whiteface decals and the blue l.e.d.'s. I also managed to get a Phantom tach in the stock location. Looks pretty good if I may say!

Just about got the body ready for paint. Working on the doors and still need to get to the fenders. May get it painted here in a few weeks. Trans should be here this week. Then I can get it started!

Its alive!! Haven't hooked the piping up for the turbo yet. Had some issues with the MSD BTM. Got that figured out finally. Waiting on a few more small parts before I start tuning. The lowdeck sounds really good just running through the carb.! Scott Brown cam has quick crisp throttle response and nice idle. Can't wait to get this thing rolling.
This thing is going to be a beast!

Dash,
trying to locate a bulb socket for the light near the alternator gauge so it looks a little dim there. Also made a pod for the two gauges on the column. Turned out nice.

Thanks guys. Its been a long pricey road. Still need a few pieces of the puzzle but real close to driving it once again.
Alex,
I had a 68 Sport Satillite a few years back that I traded to a guy by the name of Moose near Lufkin. My buddy calls him MOOCH LoL... I kinda got screwed on that deal.

Well,
I started some tuning and found that my Uego has an issue. Sent it in to get repaired or replaced. Good thing is it's still under warranty as far as the gauge. AEM tech said the Bosch o2 is not covered??? It didn't even have 15 minutes run time on it. No more until I get that back. Trans seems to work well with the 2800 stall. Can't wait to get serious with it!!

Wow! First time in over two years the Cuda has seen sunlight! She is on her way to rehab. I am at wits end so I am sending her to a friends shop to iron out all the B.S. I just don't have the time right now. WIll update as soon as I get her back.

Bone Stock 383 with 2 radiators!!??
Funny thing, a teenager was driving by the other day and seen the intercooler and had to stop and ask what size Turbo I had? So much for being sneaky!!! Guess I will have to put the front bumper on to disguise the darn thing! Last person I would have expected to ask a question like that.
