What is a old 392... Big block... small block.... or something in between, it kinda looks like a small block with lots of deck height

It's a 392, not a BB, not a SB The original Chrysler Hemi V8s started life as a 331 C.I. passnger car motor, not considered for racing until 1955 And then things went crazy

It may not be a big block or a small block but every one will agree their a heavy block

I consider the bore space as the indicator of small block or BIG block. heres is some info i got from the rodders forum:

Quote:

325 Dodge hemi already has a 3.80" stroke. To get 390 cubes, you'd need about a 4.5" stroke.

Problem with the early Dodge hemi is that its bore center-to-center distance(bore space) - 4.1875 inches - is one of the smallest of any V-8 ever (the Ford 4.6-5.4 modular V-8 is smaller).

By comparison, a SBC is 4.40 inches, SB Mopar is 4.46, and a BB Mopar is 4.80 inches.

So all the early Dodge hemis are small-bore engines, and the small bore limits its cubic inch potential.

The early De Soto hemi was also limited in size potential, just not quite as limited as the Dodge. Its 4.3125" bore center distance you will note is still less than either a small block Chevy or Mopar.

And just FYI, the Chrysler 331-354-392 hemi had a 4.5625" bore spacing.

So, like Cab said, its in between a BB and a SB...interstingly, its actually about .200 closer to a small block!

a small block mopar trans will bolt up to it using a adapter plate

...Its also considered a raised deck @ 10.87", ~1/2" over the 354.
...Memory is bad, but seems like the sb timing set & dizzy will work on it.

The tooling is far closer to LA: rear distributor, cam to crank distance, oil pump location.

Thankx Jeff... good info .... I see some around 416 cubes floating around. Can you get any rpm out of that set up, it seems like a small block with a long rod, Do they make lighter parts, Alu heads & intake? How far can you push the bore size? Are the factory cranks forged?

It's an outgrowth of Chryslers first OHV v-8, there are alum heads&intakes new from Hot Heads, it would have to be in history second only to the 426 style Hemi in Top fuel and Funnycar wins. There is a large contingent that think it's the best V-8 ever made as engineering ruled over cost. Racers& upper end racing parts manufacturers who made thier bones with the early Hemi is a who's who of drag racing.Today expect to spend alot of cash and have adapters that bolt to adapters to run a 92' with modern parts. But it can be done.

The 426 designers didn't have the clean sheet of paper to work with, and the valve gear is a compromise to use as much RB tooling as possible.

You can use sb spec springs in stock application, sb distributor, sb timing chain also.

hunting around the net it seems that most of the 392 builds favored older technology, forced induction or fuel injection. Anyone find a newer build that's NA using newer parts, Seems like if the heads are around you could make some real power from that block with a single 4.

the Hot Heads guys made great power out of a 331 for the Engine Master challenge, given it was a single 4 but.... still NA

Think of it as a tall deck small block.

An all new aluminum early hemi 392 block is due out later this year.

Small block Mopars give up 40 cubes to Chevy and 30 cubes to ford, I guess the new hemis are small blocks This old 392 hemi being in between sounds more like racing politics to me

no, the SB mopars actually are bigger than the Chev( and will accept a bigger valve), thats actually helped them in nascar. The SB mopars dominate in World of Outlaw racing as well.

I was thinking about the old factory blocks 400 chev, 390 ford, 360 mopar, I cant run a race block in my class, seems the 392 fits the factory block part

Oh, OK. Never heard of a 390 Ford SB, but that doesnt mean anything, lol. I think the 400 chev was possble because it had siameezed bores.(no water jacket)
