Has anyone here broken an Eagle Crankshaft?

Has anyone here broken an Eagle Crankshaft? - 01/07/11 03:46 AM

It's all BS till someone verifies it, but thought I would ask if anybody has broken and Eagle crankshaft. Someone told me he's seen 2 broken at the snout. If so, I'd like to know what power level. Thanks

i've seen plenty of broken eagles, but i've also seen plenty from other brands too ranging from around 850 HP on up.

I've heard of more Callies being broken, but perhaps that's because people use them for high HP applications.

You know with all the main cap issues the big blocks
have I wonder if some of the people think it was a
broken crank that broke the block BUT maybe it was
a broken main that broke the crank... I've seen plenty
of broken main caps on BBs

Probably
Or also the margin for a poor tune is much more profound and catastrophic at these higher levels IMO.
When I see broken rods, mangled parts, busted pistons, it seems to be a easy target just to blame the China rod, or inferior crank that caused the destruction. When I know running a bad tune out the back door will tear up the best of the best parts.
FYI
I had a 4.15 stroke Eagle Crank I used in a build back in "03" when there wasnt much else available and put hundreds on top of hundreds of pass's and thousands of street miles. Although that stock block based engine probably never seen much over 700-750hp, it did survive sucking the pan dry on one occasion turning the crank down .020+ and mag'd ok for several more seasons of abuse.
I can say that I personally have used a 4.5 stroke 2.2 journal 440 Source crank shaft for a several seasons of abuse with power levels at or near 900hp mark. This wasnt no one pass wonder either. IIRC the last race weekend at the Mopar Southern Classic two years ago I put close to 30 passes during the coarse of that one race outing.
Im not so sure that these off shore cranks are from the same foundry based stuff just reboxed. So Cat, Scat, Eagle, K1 are of the same quality in my eyes.
Yes some are finished better over all and diff places than others, but when I use the final product whats the diff between these cranks? In the end they are all checked, correct, and run either way.

i don't run Eagle but have seen an Eagle break at the flange & it wasn't that old either, but in saying so, it was being abused by an idiot who thought it could take it.

Yes we have seen cracked Eagle cranks but also cracked Callies,Bryants,Wimber,LA,Chrysler as well as others.Usually something else caused the crank to crack like bearing, rod, caps or piston to head collision or improper installation or application.

Yes,that would be under"and others".We have seen many of the top fuel cranks of all brands that get circulated in race parts for sale that are claimed to be good cranks and are actually cracked when checked.A lot of guys will still run them in low Hp applications.WE won't.

I guess you are probably inquireing about forged cranks but most of my experiance has been with their cheaper stuff, one was a cast 4in crank SB with no mods except the crank and pistons, it was just thrown in during a rebuild to get a little extra towing power even had a stock cam and heads intake and it broke between the number one rod and main, the factory ground away so much material to lighten it up (so it could internal balance accordin to them)but than nothing was left to hold the crank together AND there was a bubble in the casting in there, it broke just a couple weeks after instalation. Absolutley no excuse for that! Also I have seen the SIR rods break in low power motors, the beam just pulled apart right on the factory installed stress risers

Because they make such total crap on the bottom end of the scale I won't use any of their stuff, of course the machining is no where as good as SCAT and K1 on the better stuff for the same price.

Yep, it's the old chicken and egg thing! We had a main cap break in our big block once - the Eagle crank cracked in two places, but held together. How that happened, we'll never know! This was an older crank, from the mid 90's I think. We are still using the same block today! <= this is as close as I could find to a knocking on wood smiley.

The reason I am asking is because I have one in my 572 that's in my dragster. It was recommended by my engine guy and so far hasn't had a problem, except the fitment of the balancer being loose, and too short of a bolt being used. That is fixed now, but some guy that was looking at buying it said that his engine guy told him to stay away from eagle crankshafts as they break at the front hub. He also said to stay away from Ross pistons, but I can't even fathom that remark. The only crankshafts, besides cast, that I have seen break like that at the snout, were used in high horsepower applications and in both cases they were Callies, BBChevys, and they were totally flogged on. In other words started up and revved high cold, 38-40* timing, and 1100 plus HP. I just wanted to know if I should pull this motor apart and change the crank. It only has 94 passes and seems like alot of work, but thought I'd ask the experts.

Unless you're driving a blower with the crank snout, the front of the crank before the 1,2 rod throw, doesn't see any power or torque at all. If it fails there it was caused by a vibration of some sort. I've heard of more failures at the front of the engine than anywhere else. I like to blame the damper or tune (or excess rpm for the engine) for this type of failure but there is always the possibility of a defect.

Depending on power level and number of passes, a disassembly and inspection of everything, including magnaflux of the crank is recommended every couple years. A good magnaflux will see the start of the crack before it grows and breaks.
