The mating surface of the cap... you can take it to
a rear end shop to have them set it up

ok I understand, thanks. I think these may be a wise investment, I know there was a thread on this, but what do you think the stock caps can handle? considering my roadster only weighs approx. 1900 lbs. with 600 hp, it is pretty easy on parts, but if it is not worth spending $300 on that, I could put the cash to use somewhere else

I ran a stock cap 8 3/4 for a long time in my car 2400#
with me but I finally broke the caps... this was with
about 600hp and low 1.20s 60'... I changed to the alum
center after that... if I didnt go with the alum center
I would have gone with the good caps.... also a back
brace helps alot

You will more than likely be fine with just changing the ring gear side cap, that one sees the highest loading. An engine shop can fit the cap, take the empty case with the cap installed to the shop , they can measure the hole size , swap on the new cap and see how much larger the hole is and cut the cap to bring it back to spec.

I vaguely remember having to take close to .125 off the one I had done, the shop did the major cut in a bridgeport and used a rod cap grinder to finish the job .

I had a set in my 8-3/4 in the coronet. Still blew the ring and pinion. Housing flex causes the problems. If you are over 3000# and have 600+hp consider a Dana 60 or a 9".

I am in the process of installing a Moser back brace right now, I figured as light as the car is that would be all I needed, but saw these caps and thought it would be more insurance, but now I see Moser makes a nodular 489 case with billet adjusters for $275, it lists up to 500 hp though, anyone have any luck with one of these?

I have a aftermarket case with markwilliams billet caps on both sides. Also has a mw steel spool and 4:56 richmond pro gears with a billet yoke already setup and never used. I would sell it cheaper than you could buy all the parts. Pm me if you are interested.
