Oiling mods to run a Solid roller?? or NOT??

Oiling mods to run a Solid roller?? or NOT?? - 12/28/10 02:37 AM

I am looking at running a Solid roller "street grind" Comp-Cams:

http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=741&sb=2

I am trying to find an answer on oiling mods... I keep running into information on people blocking ports, bushing bores, external pickups.. Blah Blah!!

What would I need to do in order to run the above specd camshaft? I already have the lifters from Comp and thats why I decided on running a roller.

Bush the lifter bores and make sure you have a way to limit cam end play and you should be good to go. I am assuming stock block??

Correct. Stock block. So the Comp Cams solid body lifters still require the lifter bores be bushed? Or is this just an added piece of mind sort of deal?

install the cam, check the piston to valve clearances after degreeing the cam, install all of the lifters and fill the oil pan up and prime the motor while slowly rotating the crankshaft over, use a mechanical oil pressure gauge that you can see and if the oil pressure does not drop while rotating the motor over your good to go, if it drops off some or goes to zero while priming and rotating you'll need to have that block bushed. I've installed a bunch of solid roller cams in hemis, RB and B motors that didn't need the lifter bores bushed or any other oiling mods I did have one early casting 1966 street 426 hemi block that needed to have the left side oil galley blocked off due to that brand solid roller lifters exposing that side oil galley at full lift The right side(passenger side) was good My street 518 C.I. low deck has a .700+ lift at the retainers custom ground Comp Cams solid roller cam and Crower SKIRTED solid roller lifters with no bushings, stock 3/8 oil pick up with a high volume pump and a stock 6 quart 1970-71 Street hemi oil pan with stock windage tray and home made crankshaft oil scraper, shift it at or above 7000 RPM all the time, 3000 + street miles with no oiling problems Make sure if your cam is a steel billet core to buy and use the bronze oil pump drive gear also

I agree with above!!!!!!
I have run a bunch with not bushing.

I ran the comp xr286R in my stock block without lifter bores bushed! no issues!

Perfect!!!

Good idea on the Oil hand test!

Thanks again Moparts!

Honestly, do you think everyone that runs a roller bushes the block?

My guess is that the ol' 80-20 rule applies ... 80% of race motors have the block bushed, 20% don't ... 80% of "street" motors DON'T have the block bushed, 20% do.

How much money ya got ?!?!? I think someone on here has a "special" on bushing blocks ... $500.+ PLUS shipping to and from Florida. At that price a Megablock starts looking like a reasonable alternative.

FWIW whether or not the lifters are "solid body" is not the determining factor. Other things come into play too, such as whether or not the lifter has oil holes for pushrod or roller oiling and where that hole is located. Also, you can run a lifter with an "oil band" as long as that oil band isn't exposed on either the base circle or at full lift.

The sad part about Cab's test is that you need to have the motor fully assembled to determine if you need to bush the bores. If you do then its damn near all the way back to square one !!

If it were me I wouldn't bush the bores and I'm at that stage with my motor now and I'm not (oil band lifters). Keeping my fingers crossed !!!

You don't need to bush the block if you use the right lifters. The Comp solid body lifters are okay, but they don't oil the roller wheel. Call Best Machine to see if they still have their solid roller lifters available. They were sourcing lifters that work in a stock block with the internal pressure feed.

While it's true that not all blocks need to be bushed, many do- so I just bush them all if they are true race engines, plan on running a rolller or to correct some inherent problem. Then there is no worry. I believe it's a worthwhile addition to race block prep. There are other considerations as well. Not all lifter bores are sized and indexed properly from the factory and Chrysler did install oversize lifters in some engines as well- right at the factory. There is little chance a novice would catch this. But that would create a problem even with a flat tappet cam.

I won't get into the other benefits of lifter bore bushings as they are well documented. It just works for me.

on my comp xr286r I ran harland 1.7s which gave me .660 lift range! I ran the melling HV oil pump and the comp solid body lifters - 3/8th pickup! Indy EZ MW heads that oil'd through #4! pause the vid at 11 seconds and you can see my oil pressure is at 76lbs also! Hope any of this helps you with your route to go.

Car ran pretty good out on the street and track with such a small cam and big lazy ports and a 1050 dominator!

Go to Herbert Racing Products or Herbert Performance and buy their Drop-in roller lifters for $269.99. Thats right,$269.99 and you wont be sorry!!!! Thats what I did,and im VERY happy with them!!!! I run a Ultradyne roller cam.

Additionally, to really be sure the block and oil would have to be at operating temperature. I redid a Hemi some time back that had perfect oil pressure-until it was fully warmed up. Then it fell to under 10psi at idle. Vintage block, flat tappet cam with lifter bore problems. Bushed block and problem solved.

These lifters also a the oiling hole drilled so they do not feed from directly from the oil gallery. This helps greatly to limit the oil flow to the pushrods and they have roller oiling.

How many miles / passes do you have w/ your roller cam? And other than their price, what else do you know about those lifters?

Re: Oiling mods to run a Solid roller?? or NOT?? - 12/28/10 11:52 PM

I've got Crower solid rollers, with no 'cutouts' and depending on which block i stick them in, may or may not expose the oil gallery at the roller wheel. A big roller cam gets big by making its lobes' base circle small, not the lobe sticking 'up'. Small and Big roller cams keep the lifter in the same approximate location in the lifter bore at max lift. Thats why you need longer pushrods with no other changes, for a 'big', high lift roller cam. Cause the lifter sits lower in the hole with a big cam. I'd just bush it.

They're $299.99 now according to their ebay store. Still pretty cheap though.

I ran the comp solid roller 286r which is a size above yours. I did NOT bush the lifter bores, ran about 5000 street miles and made several trips to the drag strip. Believe it or not this was in my daily driver for four months. I was very happy with the results. I always had 60-80lbs of oil pressure and went 11 ohs at the track with a pump gas 408 and edelbrock heads. Id like to add that it had a ton of torque right off idle and 13.5hg of vacuum. IMO bushing the bores would be a waste of money.

I think ebay stores always asks for more money because they have to pay their fees. Those roller lifters are a NICE QUALITY piece!!!!!
