big block 590 purple shaft cam spec? - 12/25/10 12:36 AM

Does anyone have a cam card on a 590 purple shaft. I just bought one from my local dealership and it didn't come with a cam card. I need the spec to dial the cam in.
Thanks for any and all info

The specs are usually on the end of the box, but google is your friend...

Specifications: * Advertised duration: 312 intake/312 exhaust * Gross valve lift: .590 in. intake/.590 in. exhaust * Lobe separation: 106 degrees * RPM range: 3400 to 6900 * For super competition applications with manual or automatic transmissions with race converter. * Three-bolt

Depending on the rest of your combo, you will want to put it in between 102 and 106. GREAT cam, I ran 10.27 with one in a stock stroke pump gas 440,iron head 452. 3400lb Dart.

But its not! Its duration is actually 271/272 @ .050 thereabouts,

Reguardless, 265 or 272 install it at between 98* to 102 ICL for best performance in most apps. mike

Re: big block 590 purple shaft cam spec? - 12/25/10 05:10 AM

Some of those spec.s are quite a bit different than what I remember WOW
'
I too have run and am running the .590.
Lots of people say "theres better cams" I`ve just never found one.

Is that really a 114c/l on the 484hyd?
I`m putting a blower on my 383 and was looking for a cam with 112--114 lobe centers ,but it already has a 484 which IS a 114?????
I thought the 484 was 110 c/l?

Should be interesting to see what the .590 does in my upcoming build and the low numerical gears....

Both the 509 and the 484 have been revised(lobe center change to 112 and 114) in the last few years for better "street" manners.As far the 590 goes,you can do better but I know lots of folks that still like the old warhorse.

Re: big block 590 purple shaft cam spec? - 12/25/10 09:06 AM

there are two versions of the 484/509 cam for
BB...108 and 114 center line

SB only shows the 484 cam with both Center lines available..

but my catalog is a couple years old

Here is the card that I got from the Tech line guys. As everyone has said and the new paperwork details the duration at .050 is actually 271. This just gives you the opening and closing points.

312° Mechanical: P4120663
Duration Intake Nominal 312° Duration Exhaust Nominal 312°
Duration Intake @ .050” 265° Duration Exhaust @ .050” 265°
Intake Lobe Centerline 104° ATDC Exhaust Lobe Centerline 108° BTDC
Lobe Separation Angle 106° Overlap 100°
Intake Opens 52° BTDC Exhaust Opens 84° BBDC
Intake Closes 80° ABDC Exhaust Closes 48° ATDC
Intake Lift .590” Exhaust Lift .590”
Note: as installed on 104° centerline per Chrysler

Re: big block 590 purple shaft cam spec? - 12/25/10 05:26 PM

I've posted this before but, this is what I've found on the MP/DC Purple SOLID cams:

Their advertised durations use timing events @ .015"

I typically find, duration @ .020" is 8º less. i.e. 312/590 cam is 304º @ .020"

Duration @ .050" is 32º less than duration @ .020"

So the 312/590 cam looks like this:

304º @ .020"
272º @ .050"

I hope that helps.

In addition to the actual duration at 0.050", this is what Dwayne Porter measured on one a few years ago.

MP .590 cam, actual measurements-

.020=303.5
.050=270.5
.100=235.0
.150=205.0

.250=148.5
.300=117.0
.350=76.0

Gus,
I have a feeling the 0.590" cam might like more compression ratio than you have. What is the combustion chamber size on your set of 452 heads? They vary a lot.

Re: big block 590 purple shaft cam spec? - 12/25/10 10:08 PM

i dont know my cc's in my heads. they are uncut so im thinking 90+ cc's so i might have 9.7CR now. the engine is a running,hyd cam combo now that needs some updating. im trying to go faster on a super budget. what if i had a shim headgasket wouldnt that get my CR up? also can deck the block and heads. with the 590 whats the CR limit for pump fuel (93octane)? thanks!

Hey Guys,

Has anyone gone from say a .509 hyd. to the .590? How much of a difference would there be given say a 10.5:1 440 fairly ported big valve 906 heads. 3800 pound b-body.

Oh ya and the best mine has run was 10.92@123 and trying to get to maybe 10.50

I ran the .590 with 1.6's and Comp 928 springs for several years without any issues.

I love the 590! I installed it at 104 in a 3050# DartSport with an 11.2:1 451.
I used Harland 1.6 rockers on the Eddy heads, Isky 8005a springs with steel retainers. Ran 9.90's at 136 MPH all motor. New owner has gone 9.77 in the car.

I never tried advancing the cam more, I wouldn't want to lose MPH and it had PLENTY of torque at 104.
