Pics of tubbed 71-72 road runner's? - 12/21/10 02:24 AM

I'm thinking of going with larger wheels and tires on my car, probably mini tub it and move the springs.
I think these cars look awesome with a big tire and sitting low.
Got any pics to share?

Re: Pics of tubbed 71-72 road runner's? - 12/21/10 02:51 AM

29x 13.5 on a 15x 12 wheel. I can just barely put my fingers between the tire and lip. But when they get taller they also get skinnier!

30 - 10.5 goodyear slicks on a 8 inch rim 4.5 b/s

I would not cut your car up too
Posted By: RV2

Re: Pics of tubbed 71-72 road runner's? - 12/21/10 03:25 AM

I could try that slick size, by the way that is a 10' rim on the back now with a 275 60 15 radial
Posted By: Ari440

Re: Pics of tubbed 71-72 road runner's? - 12/21/10 03:29 AM

it might rub with a 10 inch rim and 30-10.5 slick

im using a 3/8 spacer now

the slicks fitted better on the 8 inch rim than the 12.5 28 m/t street tires

Re: Pics of tubbed 71-72 road runner's? - 12/21/10 03:32 AM

Back when I had a 72 Satelite, I measured from the inner wheel opening flange to the inner wheelhouse wall. Basically, the width of the wheelhouse straight above the axle centerline. AND I got 14 inches!!!

That's already a lot of wheelhouse.

Maybe, you could just go inboard spring kit or add a ladderbar set-up. To me, going back to the leaves and grinding off the welds for the 2 crossmembers for ladderbars is not that big of a deal.

Re: Pics of tubbed 71-72 road runner's? - 12/24/10 10:39 PM

I am currently tubbing a '73 for someone on leaf springs. Its a long story, anyhow, even mini-tubed with the leafs under the stock rails you can get a huge tire and wheel in there. Just put another shortend rear housing and axles in it and have the look for a fraction of the cost in my opinion. The car i am currently doing had something like 29x15.5" on 15x15 wheels but with something like 7.5" BS---just with the springs moved in and stock tubs widend.

Now its getting a similar tire and the wheel size is still the same but with 4.5" BS to get that real Pro Street look. I am moving the rails and spings in even farther so the tires can be tucked in some so it doesn't have the jacked 70's look that it had before.

some call them "coke bottle" i like the "fuseloge" term...
those make some excellent cars...
you guys have some fine examples...
there was an orange, airgrabber, with orange interior..and the black stripe treatment..the one with the black stripes under the rear bumper.
it had a 6pac and 4spd..with the orange seats..
down the street from me...i havent seen it out in yrs...dont know if it he still has it..?
but ive only seen one with the orange seats..
and for that matter the black stripes under the back bumper...
was that common? it was a 71..fwiw..

They are made by previous owner in early 80s. Nothing original there and welded directly to the quarter.

Not to hi-jack here, but this was for sale a few months ago on here. Did anyone here buy it? I'd love to see more pics of it, but this was all the ad had.

Cheap, That makes 2 with orange seats. I had a 71 Road Runner back in 1982. It was Hemi orange w/vinyl top. Had the orange inserts in the seats. Was a 383 4 speed car. Also came with the cassette recorder on the console. And had the black out trim on back bumper and gravel pan. Sold it in 83 to this guy that had it at a car show in Atlanta. Don't know where it went after that?

some call them "coke bottle" i like the "fuseloge" term...
those make some excellent cars...
you guys have some fine examples...
there was an orange, airgrabber, with orange interior..and the black stripe treatment..the one with the black stripes under the rear bumper.
it had a 6pac and 4spd..with the orange seats..
down the street from me...i havent seen it out in yrs...dont know if it he still has it..?
but ive only seen one with the orange seats..
and for that matter the black stripes under the back bumper...
was that common? it was a 71..fwiw..
cheapst

This one is a 71 Road Runner clone street car. I worked on it last year for a woman here in town. I Painted the engine compartment and did up a 440/727 for it.

Yup. He ran around in Coquitlam with it when I first met him, the car has been in storage for years. It's a true local legend IMO.

How did he make the see through hood?

I've seen this done, use a large sheet of Plexiglas and warm it up with a torch in the center working too the outside. Using the stock hood as a template/mold coat it with PAM, butter flavor optional as a mold release. Lay the soft Plexiglas center over the hood and working the outside edges down with the torch and allow too cool.

In its soft state it will flow the trick is too move/work real fast, after its cooled mark the outside edges/border for trimming, gently pull and pry away, should come off if you laid a even amount of release agent(PAM). Trim the overhang/extra material, use Dawn dish soup with a clean rag too clean the underside and your done.

I agree, make it what you want. Some here may hate me for this, but back in the 80s I cut up a 1970 V code sedan Road Runner. Moved springs in and full wheel tubs, stretched the wheel openings, frame connectors and 10 pt. cage. It didn't have original motor or trans so I figured why not. I don't regret cutting it, however I do regret selling it!
