A Body with Hemi, the greatest S/S cars ever.

Re: A OR E BODY RACE CAR - 12/18/10 10:02 PM

A-body because it's less expensive, shorter wheelbase, lighter and smaller. Over the years, both had everything from a slant 6 to a Hemi available in it.

I love the E bodies but I think the A bodies make better race cars

I have seen BB/A bodies weight just as much as BB/E's around here....just my Also i think the e-body has a slight aero advantage to it.

Measure the total front flat area like the bumper, windshield, headlights and so on between the two body styles, I think you may be suprised

E-bodies make very cool race cars but damn are they expensive. A-bodies are easy to come by.

For the record, my '73 small block Duster and my husband's '72 small block Challenger weigh almost exactly the same. 3,300 vs. 3,340 pounds.

68 A's are the fastest,70-71 E's are the coolest!! IMO!

Re: A OR E BODY RACE CAR - 12/19/10 07:04 AM

I have both and after dealing with building a 70 Cuda and I think the A body by far.
over the years there are more sucessful A's than E's running NHRA pro stock stock or stock /superstock classes.

Re: A OR E BODY RACE CAR - 12/19/10 07:51 AM

I have had both and in my opinion there is NO comparison. The E body is way easier to work on in the engine compartment. They are wider cars and they also are the best looking...to me. They do cost more though....thanks Chip Foose!!

Have both, but the A bodie, is the way to go

Re: A OR E BODY RACE CAR - 12/19/10 05:07 PM

E-Body all the way. Everyone has an A-Body race car. Yes, they may be more readliy available, Cheaper to build & lighter in weight but its almost like having a Mustang. Sorry, I like to be different. I know when I get my E-Body done it will almost always be the only one out there at the track.

If you don't all ready have a car, go A-body. E-body guys are to deal with. Been there, done that. And I don't mean racers, I mean resto/originality guys.

Good answer!
Not only does the A body have the weight advantage but doesn't it also benefit traction-wise from more rear-overhang???

Though I might disagree about the traction bit

This 1966 Hemi started it all for the Mopar movement in Drag racing..

1966 really ??? it was started long before that.
try maybe the 62-64 Max wedge being superior to the competition.
The sucess of the Ramchargers in those years as well as a few others.
Then S/S 65 A-990 cars or A/FX altered wheel base for some even the 64 Hemi car as a starting point.

Does say he has graciously lowered his reserve and buy it now...What the heck was it before?? Member or not I think puff puff pass is in order Then again it is an E Body

Oh yeah I do, and have had a few E boies. Nice cars but would not be my first choice as a racer..

Its really just a personal prefrence when you get down to it. I went from a 69 Valiant to a 68 Barracuda to a 72 71 and now 73 Cuda and never looked back. Nothing like seeing an E-body Cuda pulling into the waterbox ready for battle. Awesome looking cars....but ALL Mopars are to me.

Re: A OR E BODY RACE CAR - 12/19/10 11:09 PM

I will hopefully have this one back out this year....So I am a little biased. Personally, if your trying to put a hemi in it, I would go with an E-body.

Re: A OR E BODY RACE CAR - 12/20/10 12:20 AM

70 E bodies are probably my favorite cars of all time, but the pricing is complete lunacy nowadays. I would be much more likely to buy a new challenger.

My 67 and 68 Darts have been tons of fun, I think they are more attractive than lots of the newer A's, and they fit my budget.

Re: A OR E BODY RACE CAR - 12/20/10 04:29 AM

Once you start modifying the cars, it's possible to make the A or E body hook very well. But comparing both as produced, or modified to the SAME level (engine, trans, suspension, etc.) the A-body has the advantage.

I've had both as my first street and then race car was a Challenger.

I would agree with the exception of Stock Eliminator(NHRA) and the F.A.S.T. racing..Nothing like a A or AA Stock 70/71 Hemi/6pk Challenger or Cuda going heads up against a brand X's best bigblock for class or eliminations..all legal A bodies can only wish they were fast enough to participate. I've owned multiple A bodies and really enjoyed them, but in these classes E's and older B's are king. Stock Eliminator and F.A.S.T. are the greatest car shows on wheels IMO!

Just ask the guys who used to have to go up against Fred Henson's former record holding Hemi Challenger.

A Duster will NEVER get close to the looks of that Cuda....no way no how...

My opinion is the opposite . there is a saying that " beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
When did looks count for adding any performance in a race car ?

Re: A OR E BODY RACE CAR - 12/20/10 06:41 AM

I like em all because they are all Mopars ! But the A-body is usually lighter and that will make the fastest race car with less weight of course. My self I love the coolness and looks of my 63 Sport Fury as it was right in the thick of the Max Wedge era which were Mopars first real threat on the dragstrip that ended up dominating in the 62-64 years untill the HEMI !
