Automatice race clutch question

Automatice race clutch question - 12/18/10 06:01 PM

I'm taking my 904 apart and it was rebuilt and never ran when I bought it. The guy didn't know what was done to it, but he said it was around $1000 bill.

My question is how can you tell what are deemed race clutches and bands vs stock? The clutches I took out look the same as the race kit from CRT, only difference is there were 4 in the front drum and now there is 5. Any help is appreciated. I've done 4 speeds all my life and rebuilt only stock autos and that was years ago.

Thanks in advance for your help

Only reason I'm asking is because they are brand new and would like to sell them to someone who could use them.

This is my . The stock factory front clutches was a tan or a brown color and the rear clutches were black or a very dark gray. Front band was also a tan or brown color. I build and have built trannies all my adult life. And the after market clutches of the high performance nature are; front clutches are either black, dark gray, red, or even blue. Rear clutches are once again a black or dark gray. Normally the front band is a red one, The rear band is always the black or dark gray color in both HP and stock. That's my and I'm sure someone else may tell you different, that's the way it works on Moparts, I loved using the 904 in my old car. 10:40s at 3300 lbs W/brake. Good Luck, cool project you have.

5 is better than 4. There may be machine work, swapping parts and/or thinner clutches/plates to fit more than OEM. I've always heard that the red clutches are the best, but forgot the brand name.

Yes I'm running the thinner discs so I can fit the 5. I have .070 clearance, I believe that is optimal

The clutches I took out are red with deep grooves in them. They are the same color as my race discs from CRT, but the CRT discs have a lighter groove in them....

I use to cut the pressure plate down and I could get 6 in mine. .010 per disc is good rule of thumb there.
