Moving again.... - 12/12/10 09:37 PM

Hopefully this can stay in the race section as this is where I hang out.

Well looks like the United States Air Force has decided we have been here long enough. Actually been here for five years this time but this will be our last stint here in Cali most likely. We were thinking it might be overseas, either Italy or Germany but an oppoutunity came up stateside that will further the wifes career so we will remain in the US for now.

We will be moving to Las Vegas, Nevada this coming year. My wife will actually be going there on 2 January. The rest of the family will move in June/July. Our youngest is a senior this year so not going to move til she graduates.

Not sure what to expect in Vegas as far as living there. We visit often but living there will be a totally different thing. We have been looking at houses there for a few weeks, hopefully will get one purchased soon. Been looking in the northwest part of town. Looking for land, also will be looking for shop space in town.

So any of you Vegas guys any advice?

Been living here for 33 yrs..

the housing market is in the tank...Alot of nice house going cheap these days...outside of that Vegas is like anyother city...part of town to stay away from..

the northwest was the fastest growing part of Vegas....you might want to check out the communting route from nellis to the northwest..

One thing, the town never closes...

Can't comment on current housing situation, but I spent a few months at Nellis and enjoyed it. Also spent time at Aviano, Italy, and that wasn't too bad either.
Good Luck

While a ways from the base there is a large neighborhood down in Henderson N of the 95 off of the Wagon Wheel exit. Good size homes, land, and some have shops/large garages already. If you check it on mapquest it's the area with horse related street names (pinto, roan, mustang, quarter horse, etc..). My friend with the overly large V-rod collection lives in that area. We'll have to meet in Searchlight for breakfast on the bikes sometime.

J sounds like a good time. Searchlight and the Harley's that is. We are trying to keep her commute time as low as possible, but ultimately we have to find the right property for us.

Mike me being happy has nothign to do with it Actually leaving California is fine. We have seen lots of places in our Air Force time. My wife still has a few years left so we go where we have to.

She really wants to go to Aviano but is not looking like it will happen. Her career has taken a different path. Honestly our next move will likely be to DC if her career continues to progress the way it is going currently. She has taken a job as the director of the Anesthesia program at the hospital at Nellis AFB. She is being groomed for a postion in DC as director for the entire Air Force. I say great for her and support her in any way I can. the Air Force has given us alot over the years. If moving, or selling the cars has to happen then so be it. They are only cars

Mrs Al is a great and smart lady.. I'm happy that the Air Force has recognized her talents and is forwarding her career..

On a personal note.. This sucks because I'm losing my mentor.. Al has taught me so much over the last year or so.. I'll miss seeing him at the track each month..

Two quick comments:
1. The couple whose wife was the maid of honor at our wedding was stationed at Nellis until last year. If you want, I can ask my wife to reach out to them for Vegas housing input.

2. If you end up in D.C., you'd be in my 'hood. Plenty of tracks around here, just not year-around racing because of the weather. I live in Northern Virginia and 440Jim lives in Southern Maryland, so we've got both sides of the Capitol Beltway covered.

I would love to be near a world class track! The Vegas heat in summer? Not so much. Good luck with the move Al.

Good luck with the move Al, Vegas wouldn't be a bad place to live for awhile, at least your hitting the housing market in a good cycle for buying there, hope the selling works out well for you to, enjoy it

Re: Moving again.... - 12/14/10 04:50 PM

Ted-I am already 35 miles from a world class facility now. So yep it will be nice to have the Strip close.

Brad-One of these days I want to get out your way. Would enjoy meeting both you and Jim in person.

Agree good time to hit the housing market. Lots of houses for sale out there for sure. I am sure the wife will find something that is what she wants that will do what we need. My only concern is as hard ad the Vegas area appears to have been hit by the economy not sure how long it will take to turn back around.

Should be a interesting adventure again. Always interesting to move to a new place and meet new people. Finding a job might be a interesting for me, but I can always go back to being a house husband and playing golf I suppose

Re: Moving again.... - 12/14/10 05:15 PM

Al, I don't envy your move and I know what it's like. I spent 20 yrs as an Officer in the Air Force and if my count is correct we moved 13 times in that period and I had some pretty long assignments. It always comes out well in the end.
