Low buck twins on /6?

Low buck twins on /6? - 12/02/10 01:45 PM

For a twin turbo setup on a Slant 6 using two turbos from a 2.2?

Could be a low buck way to go agreed or no?

A pair of the later Mitsubishi turbos would work but with all the fab work you might be a little better off with a single Buick turbo if you can find one.

I think this would be easier/cheaper.

Is there a good chance the stock factory exhaust manifold will crack with that single turbo on it?

My thinking was the 2.2 or mitsu turbos for a smaller engine could be a more economical way to pressurize the /6 over a $1200 larger single turbo would cost?

Factory was planning to run one on their own manifold.

Get the later manifold with the ribs cast into it and support the turbo with a brace. Should be good to go.

The nice thing about a slant six is everything is on one side of the motor making it really easy to mount and connect everything.

Single turbo, OEM manifold 30,000 miles with no problem.I made an adapter from a U-bend that has the correct flanges for the turbo. I didn't weld to the manifold

The mitsus are way to small, 2 garrets would be good for 500 whp though and are far more durable.

What are the specs on the /6 and the turbo on your setup? Any #s on power or performance on the car?

Would also like to know how the carb is set up.

the Dutra duals look like no room for a starter. Or too much heat for one.

Turbo off a 6.5 GM diesel,.450 lift cam with 114 LSA installed 2 advanced,3.55 gears,2,400 stall converter,904 with 360 999 clutch packs and wide ratio gearset.large valves, home ported head.offy intake, holley 390.3500lb A body full street car with 340 resto springs.14.65 with 12 lbs of boost no intercooler.I need to cure the bog off the line, because my 60ft. is 2.6-2.7,it also lays down in high gear that I think is due to the lack of the I/C.Like I said,it will be faster when I work out the tuning issues

Im totally new to turbos but is that 6.5 GM diesel turbo going to give you a quick spool up on an engine that is about half as large as the turbo was originally bolted to it, that and what is the turbo spinning at with a higher revving gas engine pushing it?

How about a pair of the them famous Ebay T3 / T4 hybrid turbos with an external wastegate?

There are designed for a 4 cylinder engine right? A pair on a /6 might work. Pricing seems to be reasonable too?

I'd just forget about the dual turbo idea for a S/6,those chinese copy-cat turbos on ebay are realy hit or miss on the quality. The money you'd spend on cheap duals could buy one brand name turbo of known quality. My GM turbo starts to produce boost at 2,500 RPMs.I lucked out and found a wrecked 95 truck with a like new turbo on it at the junkyard.A single turbo with an internal wastegate will be "less difficult"to fab parts for,and tune.Just remember, you'll be dealing with plenty of problems trying to get the carb tuned.

A single would be easier to plumb in with less pipe. I get a kick out of these /6's in the tens.

It looks like, in the prior picture, that teh 2 turbos are tangential housings but mounted so they are hanging down. Perhaps flipping them over and rotating the CHRA and compressor would get the turbo high enough to get away from the starter? Might move it up 2-3"? That will surely cause other hurdles, though (it always does).
