Head gasket thickness

Head gasket thickness - 11/30/10 01:39 AM

Hey guys,

Im looking at getting one of the Mancini racing christmas special power packs for my 360 and it comes with a felpro gasket set

I have looked on a few different sites but can't find anywhere the thickness of the head gasket. I was wondering if anybody has used this gasket kit and knows what the thickness of the head gasket is. My plan is KB107's zero decked with tight quench, so hoping this kit has a .038 thick gasket or more

I've tried asking on another forum, but was attacked as being lazy by people who couldnt provide the info themselves no matter how much they looked either. I know the gasket is the permatorque blue, but not even mancini could tell me the thickness when i called, and id rather ask people with know how instead of a techline at felpro who probably doesnt know what im even asking. If anybody has the info, I would greatly appreciate it. I believe this is the head gasket in question

thanks
Matthew

The 8553 permatorque and the 1008 Steel O-ring gasket both are .039" thick.

8553pt is .050"+ ,at least the few that I've measured.

Is that compressed thickness? sorry, i should have mentioned that

That is upon removal, how much they spring back I don't know, but not much. New uninstalled .0575"-.0585".

I've seen that figure around as well. The last set I removed measured .051".

Re: Head gasket thickness - 11/30/10 02:19 AM

If i run an open chamber non quench head zero decked obviously quench wouldnt matter right? if thats the case, would the thickness of .039 still be beneficial in this case?

What gasket do you guys recommend that would give the .039 compressed thickness without being overly expensive..this is a fairly mild build

Re: Head gasket thickness - 11/30/10 02:20 AM

Well you know the Summit catalog is always right and it states the permatorque gaskets are .039". I know the 1008 is .039" but was going by the catalog for the 8553.

Could be wrong don't bet the farm.

The 8553's I have on the shelf just measured in at .054".I have seen them advertised both ways, but that is what mine measure, for what it's worth.

Is that before install, or after removing them from being used?

New,unused. If they compress the same as the 1008's I have used, they should be around .051"
compressed.I can't promise the compressed number though.

Thanks for the real world info. Its strange that they would advertise the gasket as .039" thick in the catalog but real world its quite a bit thicker

My older 1008s measure .039 so it sounds like they
are making them thicker now... glad I still have a
pile of the .039

Not trying to steal the thread or go off topic, but has anyone ever re-used these Fel=Pro gaskets?

I have a couple of pairs from previous builds that appear to be in good shape. Is it worth the risk, or should I just get new?

I am doing a SS motor and the Felpro 1008 after installation and disassembly measure 0.044" on my assembly which is 0.005" more than advertised.

Eddie, have you measured er up yet?

trying to do some rough compression calculations and its kinda hard to figure out without a sure head gasket thickness...one more measured atleast helps for an average measurement to go by
