1/2" fuel pickups - 11/29/10 06:22 PM

dose anyone make a 1/2" pickup to fit in the stock fuel tank on a 74 Charger I have looked around on the web and havent found any. Found them for a body 68-70 b body 70-74 e body and 68 c body but no 71-74 b body or 62-65 b body. budys 74 charger has the stock 5/16 fuel line and pickup feeding a 440 that should run a lot better then it dose we think its the fuel system. and he want to go 1/2" I dont want to make the system from scrach I found pre bent line from the tank to the pump but no pickup. thanks Ken

You've done better than I have, I ended up taking my stock pick up(1971 Duster) to a local hot rod fab. shop and they removed the stock pick up and duplicated the bends with a stainless 1/2 inch tube and silver soder it back in the stock locationThey even attached the sending unit like it was stock so it reamined in calibration IHTHs.

Unless that thing has a SERIOUS motor, a 3/8" line will be plenty.

a warm 440 should run fine with a 5/16" line, the sock is probably loaded with crud. But if you do change the pickup to 1/2", you also have to change the 5/16" fuel line from the tank to the engine compartment to get any benefit.

yes I know I would have to change the fuel line to 1/2" you dint read my whole post Witch I do the samething from time to time. yes we think that the 3/8 pickup and line is enought but if we are going to the work to change the whole system its only about $75-100 more to with 1/2" why not go over kill. I made plenty of 1/2 picks when I worked in the fuel
lab for Chrysler... if you have a bender you can do it
BUT when soldering it back on to the plate watch
out that you dont over heat/burn the isolator for
the gauge you cant get them

To answer your question, no. Why not go over kill?? Well, it's over kill - not to mention you just waisted $75 - $100. What ever size you go with, Mr P-bodys post is important. When I did mine, I wrapped the sender in a wet rag and used "heat block" around it to prevent damage. I didn't plan on ever running faster than 11.50, so a 3/8" pickup was plenty for me.
