sdce retires supercharged 383! - 11/10/10 09:02 PM

So after 10 years and taking on water when our shop was flooded in March 2010, we decided its time to retire the 383 in our Challenger...she went down in a blaze of glory.

SO....the big question is what to do with the Challenger next?!!!

See here...
8.50's one last time...

Build a turbo small block and go even faster!

We're definitely contemplating turbos, but the chassis is only certified for 8.50's. And because we drive the car around town alot, we don't want to put a crazy cage in the car. decisions, decisions!!!

Nothing more streetable than a turbo IMO. Go mild cam, add boost and shoot for some fuel mileage with some handling thown in...

Nothing like an 8-second street car that is home on a road course too.

Yeah, turbos are definitely the way to go...if we can get our "tow" vehicle to do this...
video of SDCE's 11 sec tow truck

This truck is our daily driver in the summer, and we use it to tow the Chally to the track...20+ mpg, 850 rwhp, 5100lb...11.50's in the 1/4...350cid twin turbo engine...
11 second truck
Then we can certainly have some fun with turbos on the Chally.
We mess with boost ALOT...our other daily drivers also have turbo boost...

How about I send my 73 Challenger over and you install the ENTIRE drivetrain, fuel system and suspension...since it's going into retirement maybe back it off to a low 9 second street ride.

Nice Chally killerbee!
Now if only we had a dollar for every person that asked us that!

Thanks.
I kinda figured there would be a line to wait in.

If your engine would feel better in it's retirement behind a 71 Challenger grill I have an original 1971 Plum Crazy R/T Challenger looking for some motivation.

Does that mean the P600B in my challenger is the oldest running kit out of your shop then? I think I got it from you in 1997 or 1998?

Hey Jon! I believe you are one of the first 3 small block Chrysler kits we sold direct to retail customers and aside from our own shop kits, you are in fact the oldest one. How's she running?! you should send me some pics and stats and I'll do a write up on our website and post it on ProCharger's page.

Sweet! I take it you really like the plum crazy?!For Mopars, we've got the one "mut" Chally, and a 70 340 Duster that we're building into a high 8 low 9 second car, and I'm trying to get my hands on a 70-73 Barracuda...that's my favorite. We also have a 71 Nova 6 cyl and an 86 GN with 22k miles on it. Plus all three of our daily drivers are "modified" with boost. Is one car for every day of the week too many toys??!! lol...

The 1971 purple R/T Challengers:
One is mine... original Plum Crazy big block 4 speed car.
The other is my wife's... original green R/T Challenger that the wife wanted purple(she had her's first) now running a 440 Sixpack with automatic.

The 1973 Challenger I bought 30 years ago at age 15, it was my first car.

I had a 72 'Cuda that I sold to my brother and currently have a camera shy 1970 'Cuda(original 440 car) that's buried in storage. Too many other old cars over the years to begin to count.

I'm not a "Mopar only" guy and have had quite a few other brand toys.

Your Challenger is a very impressive running car, I would like to try a boosted big block Mopar someday but I have zero experience with them.

Yeah you were another guy that was doing the "impossible" with a factory block. 10 years of making way more power than is generally accepted by the "experts" that cant get an engine to stay together with an aftermarket block. Sorry to see it go... One of my favorites.

thanks trendz. We're sad to be taking it out of the car. Not once did that engine let us down or leave us stranded. It'll get put in the archives with the procharged small block that was originally in the car back in 1997-1999. That 10 sec motor still runs too.
Change can be good so we're looking forward to building something new and exciting.
How's your car doing?

Nice collection!
Yeah, boost whether turbo or superchager is a lot of fun. And if you have a solid platform that is tuned properly, they can last forever. We have many customers out there with boosted big blocks and small blocks carb'd and efi'd ranging from 500-600HP street cars to 1300-1400hp 7 second strip monsters. Our Chally originally started off as a carb'd 10 second small block car with a stock 360 block and crank and hand ported J heads! The very first article on our boosted small block was in Mopar Muscle September 1998. High Performance Mopar then did a write up on the entire car in late 1998.
Our Chally ran the small block from 1997 thru early 2000 when we converted to the 383 we just retired. The only reason we changed to the big block was because we started to get a big demand for our supercharger systems for big blocks. The Chally is the guinea pig for many of our new products.
16 years of experience boosting mopars, chebbies and fiyords has taught us a thing or two. If you understand how an engine works and the physics behind it, it doesn't matter what the emblem on the grill is. All brands have their good and bad.
We'll be happy to work with you if you do decide to build a boosted engine platform. You'll be glad you did it wondering why you didn't do it sooner! lol!
