Race Trailer, did I get a good deal?

Race Trailer, did I get a good deal? - 11/08/10 01:42 AM

I just put a deposit down on a race trailer. I'm new to this, but scanned the Moparts and other forums, and posted some threads on here last week to solicit help from you guys. I don't have pics yet, but please tell me what you think. In person, the trailer was a little dirty, but no major damage. Not in the ad are the 7200lb axles, 6-lug aluminum wheels, and brakes all of which you guys said were must haves! Here are the details:

the ad:

2002 Hallmark 28 ft. Car trailer Has a 4500 lbs. Winch in the floor . Factory interior lights (8) with batt. Back up . Upper and lower cabinets with work bench and closet . Diamond plate on floor . Four foot walk in door and ramp door and a door to exit your car . The a/c unit is 15000 btu roof mount . Electronic tough jack with load distribution hitch four wheel breaks new tires on aluminum wheels . Permanent tags .

He also threw in:
Pit Bike
Air compressor
3 new spare tires on wheels
straps
Tool Box
Canopy
Lots of shelves and organizers
Big Fan
probably some other stuff I'm forgetting...

This felt like a turn key race operation, just add my Hot Rod and tow truck. Super nice guy, but this is my first trailer purchase. How did I do for $8500

Thanks,

Greg

That is a lot more options and sounds like a nicer trailer than mine. I think you did well.
EDIT: you did VERY well!

Sounds like a very nice trailer, dirty is easy to fix, just wondering though, 6 lug wheels are ussually 5200 lb axles? My 8 lugs are 7000?

Ouch! Good info. All the other trailers I've seen (and that's not very many) had 5-lug wheels for the 5klb axles. I didn't check the tag on the trailer. I don't know if this is a deal breaker, but I will definitely check!

My 28'er has 6 lug wheels and they are 5200lb axles.

I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker

Check the title, not the tag. There should also be a plate on the trailer somewhere with the info.

It took a week or so for all the "funds" to clear the different accounts. I towed it home today! It's registered with a new plate and titled in my name! The pit bike is fun and we spent most of the evening peeling off stickers and scrubbing the walls. That cleaner posted above really works well. Tomorrow is painting, some wiring, and other miscellaneous stuff; I'll be sure to post pics. This was the first time towing with my Cummins Dodge and it did well.

Later,

Greg

Good deal, looks nice
If it has the plastic roof vent caps, you may want to replace them with the aluminum ones. My trailer get hammered in a hail storm, and the hail broke out the plastic roof vents (see picture) and the car inside suffered some hail damage. The white plastic pieces are from the AC cover.

Yes it has the plastic ones. Where can I find replacements? Also, some of the interior panels could use replacing. Are these available as well?

If Haulmark is still building trailers out by Sun City that is where you can get sheets of white aluminum. I've had the plastic vents in the desert for 13yrs with no issues. I'm sure if you so much as sneezed on them they would probably turn to dust though...

Looks like you made a good purchase there. Lots of accessories for sure. However you might look into a quieter generator, your racing neighbors will appreciate it also a vent to have the exhaust go aboove the traler would be nice for everyone. If you are gonna run it like it is in the cabinet I suggest a Carbon Monoxide detector for sure.

I have been able to get replacement covers and other vent parts at a local RV dealer.
Good Luck,

Re: Race Trailer, did I get a good deal? - 11/15/10 06:03 AM

You can get the covers at just about any RV / Trailer store. I actually like how the plastic ones let in some light, but I learned the hard way that one bad hail storm can damage the car inside the trailer, not to mention it pummeled the heck out of the trailer. I had to replace both rear brake/turn signal lights, and all the running lights reflectors on the drivers side of the trailer. I have not checked out the AC unit. The cover is toast, and the condenser is pretty well smashed too. I think it may be easier to just replace the entire unit than try to piece part it back together?

Can I make some sort of exhaust/muffler to vent it out and quiet it down?

yes...mine had the pipe going to the roof of the trailer attached to the front corner...was very quiet, it was an onan...I also have a generator like the one shown in yours and is very noisy...so im going to take one of the stock pipes that was on my wife's Harley Sportster and adapt it...those are quiet

you can go to a lawn mower shop..they make quiet mufflers that are on the big riders that are quiet

Wow, very nice. I've basically got the same EDGE. Mine is a 28 with some differences. I tried putting a Harley exhaust and elbow going vertically, but it sounded like a motorcycle running..LOL My Onan already has one muffler, but I would like another idea. I like Harleys, but not hearing one for hours and hours. Nice trailer.

Jeff, you tree'd me..LOL When you find an adapter from 1 3/4 to 1 3/8th, or whatever it is, please get two.. I like the idea of the bike exhaust, as I have several I got from a garage sale to try out. Maybe I just need to mount it higher. Thanks. If you need a bike muffler, pay for the stamp and I'll send on out to you..

Rich...I have a few things that I need to get done before I mess with the muffler...been saying this for a few years...BUT..when I do I'll take pics of what and how Im going to adapt the Harley muff to it...I like the sound of muff...sounds sorta serene...

I agree. The last time I went to Woodburn for a regular bracket race I pulled in on the north side of a very large trailer hoping to take advantage of the shade. Once I was unloaded the owner of the big trailer came around and slid out a very noisy generator and fired it up. I don't know why he needed a 6000W generator running the whole time. I ended up racing him in the first round, treed him and won. He was packed and outta there real quick Those guys with $100,000+ racing operations really hate losing to guys with 20 year old trucks and home made flat bed trailers.
