timing issue

timing issue - 10/28/10 12:18 AM

What's the best way to dial in the timing I should set? I have a 440 stroked to 500 cubes, around 14:1 compression. Been running 34deg. Looking to make some adjustments and wondering if I should try 36 without detonation? Any experience or insight on this would be helpful.

What fuel you run? I would think 2 degrees in either direction would not hurt. Up the timing until MPH starts to fall off then you are to far.

At 14:1 this is clearly not a pump gas engine street engine. That being the case I would probably elect to simply run a locked advance. Just to be safe and assuming that you won't be tuning it on a dyno I would start at 30* and run at least two runs at this setting. Bump it 2* and make two more runs. Repeat this until trap speed starts to fall off. Needless to say it's important to keep all other variables [ launch and shift rpms etc. ] the same. If running alky you could start at 32* If on gas I would start slightly rich on the A/F mixture. Good luck.

put good gas in it and give it a twist.

Run 112 fuel. Thank you for the guidance. Seems to run a tad rich. Wondering if bumping up 2deg will help. I'll try 2 passes change it and make 2 more shifting the same.

112 sounds a bit low to me for the much compression. Anyone else think the same?

I dyno tested a B1-BS headed 452 C.I. 440 motor several years back that had 14.7 to 1 comp. ratio, it liked the VP C14+ versus there C12 race gas. Around 25 HP more with C14+ What heat range and brand spark plug are you using now?
