too many R's - 10/19/10 12:01 AM

can't seem to keep my rocker arm adjusters from loosening . Am I running too many RPM's or are my springs shot. 499 ci lowdeck shifting at 6900. Hughes roller tip rockers with Scott Brown cam 254/265 .587 flat tappet

Several things are posiibly causing the loose adjustments, not tightening the adjuster tight enough when done adjusting, camshaft is wearing out, adjusters or pushrods are wearing in the contact areas Are all the valve adjustments needing tightening equally or is it sporadic on the differences in adjustments needed? Let us know what you find

actually Cab it is just a couple of rockers that are giving me fits and almost always #6 intake. I've changed the rocker arm out for another , I've use another pushrod and I have checked clearance between the head and the pushrod. Missing a shift point or going too high on the burnout and you can count on a weak cyl , and it's always the valve out of adj. or the pushrod is off. Could it be a weak spring? Also have the same problem with Crane ductile irons , but not as frequent

Sounds like the valves are hitting the pistons Been there, done that

im no expert but a 499 with a 254/265 cam...

6900 is a bit high --have you tried shifting it at 6000 or so ?

Check for coil bind or retainer to guide clearence or rocker to retainer clearence. Also check for puchrod interference.

Thanks 493 Dart, this where it runs the best. I've tried from 6000 to 6900 and 6800 is where it runs the best. It has ez max port heads and 5500 stall , 488 gears. Only 12 to 1 cr

Thanks BG I checked all that when doing geometry for pushrod length. But I am going to do a lobe lift check next just to see if I got a cam going south. Really confused on this ! I'm seriously thinking the flat tappet stuff just isn't gonna handle these rpms. ?

Also look at the height of the retainer and top of the valve stems, the locks may be sinking in the retainers.

with the flat tappet..you must have those push rods dead on,i had a similar prob..and it was my boo boo, pushrod just wasnt set perfect on the dimple in the lifter, before i tightened the rocker shaft down.

What heads? I had a flat tappet in my 499 last year and shifted it at 6900 with no problems but it was quite a bit larger than your cam.

I switched to a roller this year and when I pulled the springs off the Indy heads the shims they used under the springs must have been soft and were all chewed up. Might want to check that.

I will be looking at that BG ,but I should be ok with 10 degree locks and retainers . Thanks

493 Dart I'm really mismatch with the EZ maxwedge port heads , in my opinion thats why it likes rpms

I'm not good at giving all info 493Dart. Actually I'm thinking about putting my Edelbrock heads on the 499 lowdeck and getting someone to profile me a cam where I can get the rpms down around 6200 on the shifts. Then I'll put the EZ's back on my 446
