GOT THEM ON W/ PICS NEED INFO ASSEMBLING COIL OVERS - 09/30/10 03:32 PM

Bought a full set of Santhuff springs and shocks.

The fronts are giving me problems getting the spring compressed enough to install the top plate. They are 350 lb . I have a spring compressor but it will not adapt to these springs. Is there any tool I need or special compressor?

Stupid question: Did you jack the front end off the ground?

I just saw where on another brand they removed the knob ans slid the platform over it. out to shop and check mine

Re: NEED INFO ASSEMBLING COIL OVERS - 09/30/10 04:06 PM

I would say that if the set in the lower picture I posted doesn't fit make a custom set similar to it. I would also make it clamp around the coil sping bar for safety, so it can't slip off.

If you can't compress your shock then have you tried adjusting in to it's lowest compression seting?

Re: NEED INFO ASSEMBLING COIL OVERS - 09/30/10 04:12 PM

I have a set like the bottom ones . the problem is the arms extend into the center of the spring which prevents the shock from going thru the spring

Then you can make a custom set. All that should be needed is two jack screws, 4 nuts and then you would have to make two custom connecting plate to pass through the coil and around the shock.

Or you could do it quicker with the half-@ssed method by taking off the lower control arm, assembling the coil over to the upper strut tower and lower control arm and then lowering the front end to compress the coil over. Then with the lower control arm still assembled to the coil over try to bolt it back to the frame! DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THIS!!!

It seems as if the knob asm. would have to come off.

How much does it like Fred, usually two people can do it no problem. 10 or 12" spring??

I appreciate the suggestions bt (I don't think we are talking about the same type coil overs. These are nothing like what you have pictured. Those are entirely different.

My spring is compressed between the lower screw plates and the top plate under the shock eye. This style you slide the spring down over the top of the shock and then place a special upper springs seat that locks under the shock eye around the shaft and sits inside the spring to cenetr it.

this shows the top and bottom platforms it sits on
the red T is the upper that is removeable. I can comporess mine enough to do that

Re: NEED INFO ASSEMBLING COIL OVERS - 09/30/10 05:20 PM

Aren't the bottom seats adjustable? Can you not thread the bottoms all the way down, install the spring and the top, and then rethread the bottoms up to compress the spring?

at a quick glance a 10"

I need to move 1 1/2" or close to that.

Re: NEED INFO ASSEMBLING COIL OVERS - 09/30/10 05:28 PM

Fred, are the springs the coorect length for the shock?I had a similar problem with a set that I was putting a 12" spring on and it was built for a 10" spring.Usually spin the adjusters all the way down and push the slotted top retainer in at an angle till it sits flush on the spring. Also try collasping the spring and use a couple of heavy wire ties to hold it and install the spriing and retainer that way.Be carefull and use substancial ties.

Or better yet just unthread the bottoms, if possible. Put the assembly in a press, put the spring in, support the "T" plate on one end and push on the "K" plate until you can start spinning the "K" plate on.

From that pic it looks like the wrong spring.

If it's a front shock it's probably correct. They are a heavy rated spring and a bear to install.

Re: NEED INFO ASSEMBLING COIL OVERS - 09/30/10 05:50 PM

the spring is 12" the measurement inside the deat with shock's full extention is 11 5/8"

It needs more than the difference to allow top seat to slide under.

Re: NEED INFO ASSEMBLING COIL OVERS - 09/30/10 07:17 PM

Yep, 12" springs are a bear to get on a shock that the platform does not come off. You are going to have to compress the spring and then hold it that way with big tie wraps or something similar...........or build a fixture of some type to hold the shock and compress the spring. I have also removed the eye on top before, but looks like that would not be enough here either.

i had the same problem when i bought my front struts so i took them to the local motorcycle dealer. the compresser they have for bike shocks are roughly the same size.they had them installed in about 10 minutes.hope this helps. Ed Geldart

I have been there twice. once we had a Ronnie Sox Memorial race and then the year before last.

Roxboro has just listed Grudge night Friday the 15th .

I should be there with Eugene Coard and the Ronnie Lyles car.

Free BBQ chicken and wet T shirt contest

Going to try Piedmont on Oct 14 or Oct 17

Re: NEED INFO ASSEMBLING COIL OVERS - 10/02/10 12:27 AM

even with all the right tools Ive had to do some special adaptions when I had my shop.
some foreign car springs and shucks had almost zero clearance and needed 3-4" of compression soo what did I do?
I put about 15-20 stainless hose clamps across each 2 sers of coils and tightened each little by little till the whole mess was compressed enough and much safer than zip ties.
then after install zip them off with the ait ratchet......
or cut em with a exhayst zipper.
I even have some stored with hose clamps on them from 20 yrs ago.
