I pulled my Rampage into the shop today and dropped
the engine and front end suspension out of it... I'll
pull the interior tomorrow then cut the floor pan out...
its going to be a W-5 SB with a auto and a 4-link
with strut front

Here's a pic of "MY Rampage"....Ask Mr_P who used to drive this everyday.

Oh well, I guess it's his now, as long as I can drive it once in awhile.

Mr.P as if you dont have enough toys allready,

you have to go and take your wifes???

That will be a cool build, you dont see too many of them.

But whenever i see one, they are built nice.

I'll be watching this one progress with a good bit of interest.

I was going to build it as a drag car some years back
but she didnt want me too... thats when I built the
P-body so now it'll be CLOSE to a drag car... I know
I could build it lighter but I am keeping the interior
basically stock and all the glass stays

I can go a choice of 3 classes, mod N/A or I do have
a blower and can go mod P/A or daily driver.... remember
that I cant get a NHRA license any more so 10.0 is
all I can go

Then Mod P/A is out and even though there were no entries in Mod N/A that would most likely be sub 10's also

My suggestion would be to go Daily Driver and try to knock on 10'0s, there is at least one; the Buick GS I believe in the 10's....any which way you go....best of luck

Quickest you can go in daily driver is 10.80 so
that isnt a problem... I;m still setting up for
10.0 and hopefully in mod N/A... even when I get

Tough to do in just one year...My brother and I went in 2006 with a 78 1/2 ton SWB Dodge. It had been pretty sorted out with a 400/727/8 3/4 combo. 2 weeks before Drag Week we bolted in a 915 headed, Dominator carbed, 493 and off we went...finished 3rd in the 12.00 class. I've been planning to take my Valiant ever since, and just haven't been able to make it.

When I was on drag week one of the guys gave me another
Rampage a 84 and he's here in mich but he said the
floor was going on it which is the same on mine...
basically the whole floor inside the cab is junk
on mine... thats why this is a perfect candidate
for a tube chassis.... I'm gonna go this weekend
to check out that other one for parts... I talked
to him today and he is suppose to get back with me,
I could use a better hood and maybe a drivers door

I dont think it'll be tough at all... I've built

I don't know the rules for this racing. But why couldn't you use the P Body you already have? You would be way ahead in the set up. What would you have to change to it to run it?

That car is built just for drag racing... in drag week
you have to drive the roads for more than 1000 miles
and race at 4 tracks... so it has to be street legal
and I sure dont want to wire up the lights, turn
signals and all the rest ... plus I always wanted to
build up the Rampage

Plan is to show up with nitrous, and the ability to choose between Mod Na or Pa, or Pro Street Na or Pa, and choose the weakest class, based on the first day. I have a license, but don't want to hassle with all the stuff required to go under 9.99, so I'll be limited to 10.00 as well.

I do everything myself... by next week I should have
all the bad floor out and have all the tubing I'll need
and start on the chassis with in 2 weeks... got 90%
of the engine, I have a 9" that I need to cut down,
got the struts and rear shocks and wheel(might have
to get different rears)... the one thing I'm still
working on is trans... if I want to go with a over drive

That will be a REALLY cool ride! The only thing I would do different would be to use the blower- more streetable/drivable on the road to get as much performance as your looking for- plus it looks cool. Have fun with your build

If I may recomend a trans....Check out SMR's 727 shorty over drive that uses a gear vendors set-up. I went with an A500 on mine, but I am sure it would not handle the kinda hp your going to throw at it. I like the 727OD because the JW bell will fit it, and a Lofgran blacket will fit it, as well as its a pretty standard piece. And the OD in that style isn't a parasitic loss like it is with an A500...So you get something that will handle a fair amount of hp and an OD to boot with minimal weight gain. With a full manual VB, it should rock.

If I'm not mistaken the only class you can run with a tube chassis is Unlimited

As long as you keep the forward frame rails it seems you can do pretty much anything else and run Modified

Thats not how I read it... basically I can build
like the unlimited but with lesser than 11.25 tire

Re: Started My Build For Next Years Drag Week - 09/22/10 05:13 PM

I think that is incorrect. Pretty sure a tube front with struts, will put you in unlimited. Some of the rules are touchy. They told Eddie not to come back with a lift off front end, or he would be placed in unlimited, even though his is obviously just a back half bracket car.

Even if they did put it in unlimited, so what, it's supposed to be about the weekly ordeal, not winning a class.

The guys that got DQ'd for changing out the whole engine when they killed it at O'rielly raceway and then purchased a new one at O'reilly parts store was just pure amazing dedication. Some serious wrenching goes on for that event for sure.

From what I understand rust is a Rampage's best friend. So this is the best thing for it. There was a guy around here that Pro-streeted one. He put huge rear tires on it but it was still FWD

Re: Started My Build For Next Years Drag Week - 09/22/10 06:59 PM

Your right Monte it is a week long thing... but it
would be a little funny when Larson can run down the
track backwards and still beat me... I can only go 10.0
might have to fall back to daily driver and just go 10.80
Yes rust sure got this one... thats why it HAS to go
to a tube chassis... even the front rails are gone

You really better get it defined before you go very far with it for drag week Mike....that tube front end is gonna bit you I believe, especially in daily driver

Rickster

Here's the rules for daily driver

* Daily Driver has no limitations on drivetrain or body modifications. Cars quicker than 10.80 are not allowed in Daily Driver, and e.t. slips quicker than 10.80 will not be accepted.
* Daily Driver entries are not eligible to win Drag Week(tm) overall.
* Throttle stops and bracket-racing electronics of any kind are not allowed.
* Daily Driver is based on an Open Comp format. Each car's five-day average e.t. will be used to determine qualifying position on a 32-car ladder for a bracket race on the final day of Drag Week(tm). At tracks with e.t. slips to four decimals, all four will be included; if only three decimals are on the e.t. slip, then the fourth decimal will be zero. The e.t. averages will be taken out as many decimal places as required to determine qualifying. Ties will be broken by average mph. The race on the final day will be a 32-car field on a Sportsman ladder (1 races 17, 2 races 18, and so on) and a 0.500-second full tree. Normal breakout and first-or-worst rules apply. Each car's dial-in for every round (the dial-in cannot be changed between rounds) will be the five-day average minus a tenth, so a weekly average of 12.20 gets a dial-in of 12.10; in the event that a car averages 10.89 or quicker, the dial-in will be 10.80. Any run quicker than 10.80 will be considered a "worst" and will lose the round. The bracket-race winner will be the overall Daily Driver Champ. In the event of a rainout on the last day, the winner will be the quickest car with the best consistency throughout the week. But there are also a lot of other potential prizes for Daily Driver racers, so read on.

Yeah I guess I'm stuck with daily driver... I have

folding in half if I opened the doors... the floor pan

What if you just left the stock rusty frame rails in the car and ran round tube underneath or beside them? The old rails would be just going along for the ride. Isn't that pretty much what they do in the back of the SS cars now?

I still have to cut out at least part of the bed floor but
I dont know if I want to raise the whole bed floor or cut out
parts for the chassis tubes and the tubs
I'll see in a few days

Re: Started My Build For Next Years Drag Week - 12/29/10 06:18 AM

Got my crank back today and started mocking up the
engine... put the 4 corner pistons in and they came
in at what I wanted... they are .010 in the hole...
I'll slip the cam in tomorrow and see what it really is
then once its all mocked up I'll run the crank back to the
crank guy for balancing.... I'll pick up my tubing
for the chassis next week.... been cutting and welding
on the body.... man this thing was rough underneath
but thats gone now... I did have to make up a sill
for the drivers side... I'll weld that in tomorrow

That's a neat project! How are you going to deal with the rust that is left on the body? POR-15 it, sandblast it off, or some other way? Dipping the body to remove the rust and paint would be the ultimate way to take care of it.

I put the Rampage on casters today so I can roll it
out of the shop to do some sand blasting... didnt want
to do it inside... but today its RAINING.... its winter
time here and 46*... hopefully its stop raining tomorrow
and not snow for a couple of days so I can get it
blasted and back in.... wish I had a trough so I could
roll the whole thing through a dip of POR-15

If I get done we will run both rides... I'll take mine
in my enclosed trailer and he will drag his open
and the first night and last night we stay in my
trailer to save a few bucks(living quarters in the
trailer) and we both use the same hotel rooms to cut
the cost down... we'll run together on the road just
in case either of us has a issue
Happy New Year to you also

Yeah I go in a day or so to pick up my tubing for
the chassis... been working on the body and still
cutting stuff out... I just talked to Turbo Action
about one of my converters I have and with the numbers
I gave Paul he said it should stall right at 5000
to 5200 so that will be about perfect... but he's not
real sure how how it will be in OD... but I'll find
out.... I have no clue where they plan on running
drag week this year

We need progress pics! Get something done everyday, cuz September will be here before you know it!
I know this is jumping ahead, but.....who is doing the paint job, and what color will it be? I need to know, so I can get a visual of what it will look like when its done.

I work on it just about every day.... I'll do the
paint myself...I'm not sure on the color yet but
have been thinking about a few choices... thought
about turbine bronze... I have to check my stash to
see what colors I have... pretty sure I have a gal
of flame red still, might have some silver metallic
or might have some black still.... I'm still up in
the air as to color... I want something that stands
out... I dont think I'll go black cause this wont have AC

come along, that why Tuesday... he wants some
tubing also for his project also

This is what it was the other day... I added a few bars
since then... then started looking at the steering
and how far back the rack will be... this MIGHT be
a issue... the way I see it now the rack will be below
the frame rails right in the middle of the engine
(fore and aft) so its going to be a tricky oil pan
at the minimum.... at least I have a month to think
this out
EDIT
Just doing some quick measurements I see that is not
really any problems... where I thought the engine was
going to be isnt true... just got to move the firewall
and the heater... I'm sure I can work around that

one and just pull the parts I need... glad to be
back so I can get back to work on it... got to set
the engine back in to check a few mock up points on
the steering... I did quite a few drawings of different
things on it while on vacation

btt this is an intresting build for sure:) just a noviceQuestion since i never built a complete car from basicly nothing, why taking the engine in and out for mockup, when you could just leave it in its mounts leving it in lace would seem like a much easier way

hey i know all about that part about making drawing when being away all the best ideas are always on my mind when im not even close to the car

There isnt any mounts in the car at this time... I
need to check so steering clearance on the rack to
see if it will clear the front of the crank and pulley
plus the engine just gets in the way

We still have the idea to go if at all possible but
the cost is pretty damn high... we figure it would
cost us $1500 each if we take just 1 car and about
$2000 each if we take 2 cars... again thats if nothing

Re: Started My Build For Next Years Drag Week ...UPDATE - 05/02/11 10:42 PM

I got the back end ready but I have to pull it apart
so I can drop the chassis out... or I could cut the back
wall straight down and keep the whole thing in tack
lacking the 2 upper bars that go through the back window
opening... here's a couple pics of where it stands now

Re: Started My Build For Next Years Drag Week ...UPDATE - 05/02/11 10:57 PM

There's a couple shorter lengths of tubing that need
to go in 1 on each side from the tube that goes to
the back, I will put a short one from there to the
upper shock area then I'll put in a tube from the front
X area to the lower tube just for some added strength.....
but its pretty much it... need to drop the chassis
and start getting ALL the welding done.... I put the
rear X brace in because I plan on towing a trailer
and the back quarters needed the stiffness

Re: Started My Build For Next Years Drag Week ...UPDATE - 05/03/11 12:55 AM

Holy smokes- with all that tubing in the box you're going to have to put a roof rack on that thing!
I agree that I never thought a Rampage could be so cool

Well it wont have a bed anymore... I'm putting alum
diamond plate across the top of the bed on the 2 rails
with a hinged rear section to get to the fuel tank

Well I decided to cut the back wall under the tubes
so I can drop the chassis in tack and weld it all up
then on the install I'll weld the upper bars via the
back window area then weld the back wall back up...
I'm going to do that today and drop the chassis...
thanks Ted... it'll look much better once its welded
and painted... the tubing thats rusted at the back was
in the pole barn and got wet... oh well a scotch brite
will take care of that

One thing about the POR-15 and Chassis Saver types
they brush on and lay out smooth... I painted the
trans with it and it layed out nice... I have to touch
it up where I didnt clean it too good and it pealed
some but I did a POOR job of cleaning in a couple of
area's... I wanted to sand blast the case but was leary
of getting sand in places
Posted By: Labratt

Re: Started My Build For Next Years Drag Week ...UPDATE - 05/03/11 04:55 PM

Raff...I thought the trans case looked pretty darn good! As soon as we get a day where the humidity isn't so darn high..I'm going to POR-15 my roll bars. With the way that's been going...might be a while!

Chassis is completed... I started painting it today
just to see what it looks like in the morning(dry)...
I'm using a sort of POR-15 but this is called Chassis
Saver that semi truck shops use... I'll see tomorrow...
I still need to weld in the trans cross member in

I'll get some pics tomorrow

My buddy and myself made the decision not to go on
drag week... we will go to one that a guy puts on
in this area... 5 tracks BUT you can trailer the car
to each track IF you want... if I'm done I will drive
the route... its in the Mich and Canada area.... next
year we will do drag week unless its farther out west
OR fuel prices are too steep.... I have to true the
rearend in the next day or so and weld the brackets
on it... then it'll be a rolling chassis

I have 6 tabs that I weld on to the chassis then weld
to the sills and back end... the front end bolts on...
I was hopeing to be done today with the trans cross
member but I'm 1 part short

Thanks Sean... I'm gonna true up the axle housing today
and get that done so I can order up the axles...
it should be a rolling chassis in a few days... the
last couple of bars(rear bars from the top of the main
hoop to the very rear, tail gate) have to go in when
the body is being lowered on cause they go through
the back window.... the 2 door bars go in the very
last thing so its easier to work inside... I'll start
on my fuel tank in a day or so... making that out of
alum diamond plate.... so its coming along

Yeah its all moly... I wanted to keep the total
weight at or below 2800# with me in it... I'm trying
to keep MOST of the stock interior in it but some
things will need to be changed around... like the
heater box will get mounted behind the cab and plumbed

Raff, congrats on getting the Rampage on the ground and rolling! That's a significant milestone in your project! The body stance looks good! It will look even better when fully loaded down.
BTW, did you find a deal on aluminum diamond plate?
Now that you can stand back and admire it, have you thought about a color to paint it? If it were mine, I'd add ghost pearl version of the factory stripes, with RAMPAGE plus the actual engine size.

Flame Red or I have a Chrysler Candy Apple Red (not

is a sorta local drag week that a guy near here puts
on and my buddy and myself are talking about going
on it... but this one allows trailering but we wont

Maybe so Mr P, but you wouldn't get the exposure that you would in the magazine. I don't know who would be on board, but man would it be cool to get a dedicated Moparts member there. I know you mentioned what it would cost roughly somewhere in this thread. Seems to me pretty possible to do if others went with the idea.

front edge..... DAMN

Keep those pictures coming.

MrP, there used to be a company that made seat cover material that looked identical to diamond plate. you couldn't even tell it wasn't from about 5ft away. might be an interior idea

I want to finish a customers chassis... as soon as
I finish that chassis I'll get back on the Rampage...
I should be completed on the Rampage by June... the
engine is ready... got my headers back from the coating
shop last week... so I could have it running within
a few days if I want... then once I get it running
and work some of the bugs out I'll paint it
thanks for asking

As soon as I get the Rampage done and paint on it
(maybe even before paint) I want to pull the engine
in the P-body and put my W-9 back in.. then hit the
track... I dont know how much racing I'll get in this
year... IF I go on drag week that will cut into some
of the racing time... but I'd like to get the Rampage
to the track a few times also to dial it in

Some UPDATES on the Rampage
Got the engine/trans in with the trans shield(for
the final time),got the fuel system done, brake lines
are almost done, exhaust is almost done, wiring is
almost done... I plan on having it fired up and running
under its own power in less than 2 weeks.. oh yeah
I got some trick head lights for it.. the perimeter has
white LED's that I will hook up to the running lights
plus it has a blue light that will be hooked up to
the turn signal so the head light will have a blue
flash to it with the turn signal..here's a couple of pics

Figured I'd put the fire up link on here.... when I
checked the timing the other day it was 16* so it was
16* on the fire up... didnt realize I had a locked
dist in it(thought it had advance) but when I advanced
it up to 34* it really came to life.... here is the
fire up video

I'm building a new engine right now... the rings never
seated in my other one... I have a new block(its
a TA block that I just got back from the machine shop...
I had lifter bushings put in, line bored, cyl bored,
decked, cam bearings, crank polished... I cleaned
it yesterday after I notched the bottom of the cyl
to clear the rod bolts and glued in the screen in
the intake valley..I am fitting the rings today...
I mocked it up on Friday for new push rods(different
deck height) and they will be ready for pick up in
a couple of days... as soon as I get the PRs I
will get it back in the truck... I want to run Woodward
next weekend... if its done

Yeah still using the W-5s.. I did put new seals on
them and yes I'll be on DW.. that hood is a AAR hood
BUT its the last one they made.. it was a 2" cowl that
I had them turn into a 4" cowl(they only made the
2" cowl)... that hood was sitting on the shelf for
more than 10 years(thats why he quit building them)
