Winter is coming so I am going to start collecting for the blower motor project. I have a world block, 440-1 heads. 4.125 x 3.75 eagle assembly at 10.23 to 1. Thinking of selling the rotating assembly and going Callies/Grp. I am going to run a roots type probably in the 12.71 range. Looking for 1200 hp range. This will eventually go into the boat and the engine in the boat now will end up in the belvedere. Ok I can build a NA engine, never built a blower motor. I am hoping to avoid costly errors or end up buying a bunch of parts that dont work good together. Ready to learn, Where do I start? Any good books or advice out there? What compression? How far pistons down in bore? Is quench still important? Cam profiles, Intercooler? etc. In the boat size limitations and height would not matter. Galen

I made 1125hp and 904tq with a 485 cube 440-1 ( 4.310/4.150) 8.4 comp. 6-71 littlefeild 1 to 1 drive on alky.Let know if I can help.

As you're starting from ground zero, would you consider a turbo instead? A Roots is old technology and other compressor types have better adiabatic efficiency (results in less intake charge heat and more power). A Roots also consumes HP off the crank, whilst a turbo uses waste energy from the exhuast and has a much lower parasitic HP loss.

A boat also lends well to a water-air intercooler, which can achieve very high cooling efficiency. Roots has far fewer options for an aftercooler (if any?).

There are a bunch of turbos on the market, which can be overwhelming, but that also gives flexibility to swap bigger/smaller later if desired. Roots is less flexible?

Thanks for the links. I am ordering as soon as I leave here. And no I have not ruled out a turbo. Can a turbo engine be made to come up instantly on power though as I would need in the boat?

Roots supercharged setups use an air-water intercooler which is sandwiched between the intake manifold and the supercharger. Would work very well in a boat because you could run it off cool lake water.

Turbos will always require some initial exhaust flow before they begin to build boost; a Roots starts immediately (but it's still a function of engine RPM). I don't have a feel for how long that would take in a boat compared to a car, but 'desirable' streetcar installations have boost start to build around ~3000rpm. How quickly does a boat engine hit 3000 RPM when going from idle to WOT?

There's the tradeoff, though, that the Roots will leach more HP off the crank than the turbo does via exh backpressure. The turbo's advantage there would allow you to perhaps use a slightly smaller turbo (which would limit overall HP) but build boost sooner.
As an example of what I mean:
large turbo - 800 hp
Roots - 800hp - 50 lost at crank = 750
slightly smaller turbo, quicker boost - 750 hp

If It helps I have a Magnesium SSI 14:71 just set up for gas that is striped and out side is show polished with 60 degree rotors for $2500.00 and I have a few stroker cranks that are machined and ready to go. I'll have to look they have been under the bench for years. One is a Bryant. One has 3" mains 2.2 rods and the other is 2.2 rod and I think .020 under stock. I'll relook if you need one. I have $1500.00 in each crank but I'll take $700.00 per crank. Both top fuel Hemi cranks.
