I was planning to go with a Victor at first when I build my new eng for my 63 sometime in the future and then try the crossram to see how much the crossram slows it down. But I was wondering since I plan to use a Victor I wonder how it would work if I throw the Victor on this mild 440 in my 63 now. Its a pump gas 10.0 comp 440 with 906 heads and the MP .557 cam. I use the Holley SD now and it seems to work good for this mild combo. I really dont think it would help this combo much but I was just kinda thinking since I will be getting a Victor why not have some fun and pop it on the 63 now. Ron

Go ahead and try it. You'll probably feel a little bog down low but it will make good power up top. I ran one on the street for awhile but got tired of the off-idle bog and switched to a Performer RPM.

For me it helped, well of course i changed several things at once so its hard to say exactly how much it helped. I switched from a hyd comp 565 cam to a 572/579 solid in my 440 with indy heads (stk ports though) and a demon 850. with auto trans and 3500 stall. I gained a good bit. I was 7.90's and now i run 7.20's (in 1/8th). I like it!

Ron if you're going to get it anyway, why not try it now and see. Make sure you remove the "wings" in the carb pad and blend in what's left before you bolt it on, though.

Andy's right on the low speed issues, but your converter
+ gear + some accelerator pump tuning should cover most of it up and should make it liveable.

It is not quite as easy to drive normally on the street as a St. Dominator or an RPM, it does not have a nice smooth linear throttle response at low speeds like those intakes have....The Victor's light throttle/low speed response is more like an on/off switch and takes some getting used to at first.

I tried one on my mid 11 second 440 stock compression 525 lift cam ,906 heads. Slowed down about .150 in the quarter. I figured it had to much flow trying to get through the stock heads. Put the edelbrock tm7 back on and pick it back up. The victor is 2" taller than the tm7

383Man, for your 3700lb combo, I would stick with the Street Dominator already on your motor.
Your nicely working engine, converter, and rear gear combo is effective, albeit pretty mild.
As such, I don't think you would benefit from the Victor intake at all.

- The SD intake does a great job as you already know. Port the SD for even more gains.
- The Victor intake sure looks cool. Save that intake for the stroker you are planning...
- Not exactly what you are asking, but it is possible that the RPM intake could accelerate the car slightly better.

For some interesting comparisons regarding intake selection on a mild 440, take a look at two separate tests that Dulcich did on the same engine at the same dyno facility (westech).
Yes, it is dyno racing, but it is reasonable test comparison data.

One test session was to show the tuning process. (RPM intake)
The other test article was to show the difference between out of the box RPM heads and MCH-CNC RPM heads. (Victor Intake)

Check out the superior TQ numbers across the board with the RPM intake with this combination.

- The Stock RPM head/ RPM intake beats the stock RPM head/Victor intake combo at every point even in the un-optimized, baseline form.
- The Victor intake, MCH-CNC head equipped combo begins overtakes the tuned RPM intake combo at 5000+rpm, and even then, it is only by relatively small margins.

I did a magazine article a few years ago where I tested a bunch of intakes on the street as well as the chassis dyno. The Victor intake didn't make anymore top end power in my combo but felt sluggish at the bottom end. I switched back to a Performer RPM which worked the best in my combo.

Every combo is different, in some cars the Victor would be the way to go.

The only way to know if it work's on your car is to test it on your car. If your buying it anyhow why not try it. It would be nice to see your result's. You might also want to try a 4 hole spacer to bring back some of the throttle response down low that you might lose.

See if you can borrow an MP M1 to test, too. Although the Victor might make a few more HP than either the SD or the M1, the others probably keep the torque curve up better below the peak and help a heavy car w/ limited stall speed off the line.

BTW, I've run both a modified M1 and a Victor on my car and have no idea what people are talking about when they say the Victor is a "light switch" at low rpm. The car ran virtually the same w/ either intake and street manners weren't any different from my perspective. Both intakes responded well to using carb spacers, too, if you have the hood clearance.
