Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 03:23 PM

Depends on what's done to it. They can be pretty quick with minimal work. Friend of mine had one, his daily driver, running 11s w/ just a few bolt ons and some drag radials.

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 03:26 PM

I think low 14s stock but it doesn't take much to make them fast. The worst part of it is they all look the same and for the most part sound the same. Its a gamble calling one of those out if you know nothing about it.

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 03:26 PM

depends on what has been done to it. They can run mid 12's w/o too much effort and I've seen them in complete street trim run in the 10's. I'd guess a bone stock GN with a good tune and driver could bang out 14 flat, the GNX ran low 13's.

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 04:27 PM

they are nothing to mess with if you havent seen them run. I've been schooled by a couple back in the mid 90s, they looked like my grammas car.
buick makes good combos, if I didnt have my mopar, I'd have a Buick, or Pontiac.....if I couldnt have them, I'd quit it it all and ride a Harley.

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 04:32 PM

Most of the GN's I see run high 10's to low 11's with minimal mods. There are a few high 8 second GN's out there running in street trim, DOT's through a muffler driving to and from the track.

Be careful what you wager......

My years of riding FAST Kawasaki bikes have come to an end....on a harley at least my kids will have a dad.... and I can still resell it for what I paid. Can you ride your rocket to Sturgis?
I dont scoff the performance of Jap, bikes believe me....but I'm more relaxed now.

Ihave owned 5 of these.. Let me know the mods and I can give you an udea,, My last street car with a stock appearing turbo still under cover, convertor, a set of Iron GN1's that looked stock and a chip and 72lb injectors ran 11:18 on street tires through the mufflers with the a/c on.. This was on low boost of 18lbs and pump gas...

I rather push a jap bike then own a Harley... A car hitting a Harley at 70mph will kill you dead just like it would on a Jap bike...

Besides if I wanted a something to sound like a VW without a muffler I would buy a VW...

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 06:14 PM

There's a very close competition between GN owners and 5.0L Mustang owners as to who is the bigger liar.

I can't tell you how many GN's there were back in the day that ran 11's bone stock except for the K&N. I know they were bone stock because their owners spent all day walking around the track telling everyone that.

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 06:16 PM

Even if you get one to go fast , they will never stop or turn. ( The Harley , not the Buick )
I got off a tweaked Ducati Monster to my Harley because of an overwhelming desire to keep my drivers license.
It was such a pig that I tore into it with 11 miles on the clock and made it better.........80 r.w.h.p. with 80 inches.
Now , it sports 110 inches and around 125 h.p. , runs on pump gas , and is pretty fast for a Harley.
Quicker than a lot of Buick G.N.'s I bet.
But I have seen those Buicks fly with no obvious tells.
It is definitely a crap shoot.

my girl friends 87 gn runs 11 teens at 120mph leaving it in drive with drag radials other than that it is facctory stock looking! [no rollbar] a friend of ours has a t type stock looking with 275 drag radials and ive watched it go 9.70s at 140mph this car is the ultimate sleeper if u saw this car at a car show u would think its a 12 second car !!! allstock interior no cage either !!! just watch u don't bite off more than u can chew!!!

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 10:20 PM

watch out for those gn's. they can be extremely fast. i've driven a couple. they were fun. the stock one was an eye opener.

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 10:31 PM

i had an 87 gn with very few mods(exhaust, ground kit, chip, adjustable wastegate and fresh air kit)and ran 11.80's with drag radials and airbags in the back. everything else was stock. definately a very stealthy car and comfortable for long drives. wish i still had it. even got 23 mpg on the highway.

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 11:48 PM

What I never liked about them was, other than their powertrain, they were an atrocious car. 80's GM product through and through - cheap interior, flimsy everything.

Re: buick gn - 09/08/10 11:53 PM

We have one, bought it brand new in 87. Ran 13.96 back in 88 at Ardmoore OK, bone stock. Dad has kept it in a time capsule, has 39,000 miles on it. We used to attend the Buick Nationals in Ennis. Be very careful calling one of these out. They can be a handful......

Re: buick gn - 09/09/10 04:50 PM

I own one of these cars so I'll tell you with my own personal experience.

My Buick has a Stage 2 engine with stage 2 heads. It's almost like Buicks version of the mopar preditor heads but from 80's vintage race parts. Well anyway, my car is a proven 9 second sreet car that passes CT emmsions every two years when its required to go. I am now shooting for 8's with some small changes.
I'm sure the car your racing may not be as built up as mine, but if it is dialed in, should easily be good for low 12's with a stock turbo and short block.

Re: buick gn - 09/09/10 05:36 PM

A friends T-type (GN in sheeps clothing) was grandma gray and had full interior, no cage etc. Looked like something you would find on a really clean used car lot.

Car ran 10.80's on DOT stickies! Traction was the main issue.

Car pulled like no street car I've ever ridden in.
