This totally stink's,,lot's of work ahead of me. - 09/05/10 08:18 PM

As i said in a earlier post that I had taken the new converter out and sent it back to Jason at Quickdraw to have it re stalled a little higher, so I put the lod TCI in to make a few run's just for a comparison but right off the bat the front seal started to leak, so I pulled it back out to replace the seal and decided to just give up on my plan and decided to just wait for the converter to come back,,so while it was out and laying under the car on the jack I attempted to put the new seal in but was having trouble getting it started so I just pulled the tranny out from under the car and thats when I found it,,,,a crack half way around the case where the bellhousing mold's into the main gear case you have got to be kidding me,, now I have to build another tranny between now and Norwalk and hope I do it right so their aren't any issues,,just what I wanted to do.

here's the first pic.

Be thankful, that you found it before a catastrophe. That failing on the track could have been life threatening.
However I do understand the frustration.

Bill like stated above check pricing for an ultrabell from summit. If its cracked in front of the pump you are good to go and saved a lot of work. Cutting the stock bell off was the hardest part of the job. all you would need is a little grinding and some longer grade 8 pump bolts.

Bill I have never seen that on a trans before. So do you have another case sitting there that you can transfer in the insides of that one to and get it going? Is there anything you need that maybe I can help you with? Just let me know and I hope you do get it ready for Norwalk!!

Your telling me,,it was just a stroke of luck that I found it, yes I have another case and will start tomorrow getting it prepped to transferr my good part's over to it,,, the funny thing is it appears that it has been cracked this way for some time and what ever kept it from dumping it's guts is beyond me.

Re: This totally stink's,,lot's of work ahead of me. - 09/05/10 11:36 PM

Wow. I never saw that before, and hope I don't see it again. I guess 40 year old parts have lots of time to grow cracks. More of a pain and labor than cost, since you are doing it yourself and have another case. I am thinking the going rate for a 727 core case might be $100-$150, basically what you can get a complete core transmission for.

Looking at the cost of the JW Ultrabell, it doesn't seem to make sense when putting a 727 on a Mopar big or small block. But it would eliminate the need for the flexplate shield, but not the trans shield.

We've had that problem before in the truck, went to an ultrabell and no problems since.

Had the same thing happen here..

Had a bad vibration in the car that no one could find. The trans was out and getting ready to go back in and I was using a screw driver to scrape some junk off of it and found it. We had this vibration for 2+ months before that..

funny you should say that, I had a vibration that mysteriously went away early in the season at CC Events @ National trails, but I was also fighting rocker issues then too.

Ours started about 55mph - And 20 times worse when you got out of the gas. This car was totally apart from one end to the other. Makes you afterwards. Hope all goes well and you make it to Norwalk!

I've seen that one other time Bill... it actually
cracked all the way around... the trans worked but had
a BAD clunking sound and a bad vibration... the only
way I noticed it was I put the jack under the pan to
lift it to see if the trans mount was bottoming out
but the front lifted instead of the rear... I still
dont know what caused it

Seen it before with turbo 400's went through 4 trannies in a chevelle before we figured it out. It usually comes from running solid motor mounts and a solid tranny mount - if the car has the slightest twist it will break around the bell-housing. That vibration you felt and then went away - I bet that is when it cracked

I think the converter was the only thing that was
holding up the front

I have done it before lmao, mine had an inch before it was all the way broke. I did what your doing, transfering guts to another case. Get a 200buck clutch kit and be done for another few years. Or atleast check em with a feeler guage to see where it's at.

I just freshened this one up this spring and it was working great, but I will go thru the clutches and stuff just to make sure.

DoubleD, I run a motor plate and limiters but with a stock rubber tranny mount, I know about the Turbo 400's having this issue and so do the stock powerglide's.

I had that happen to me. The driveshaft was not balanced and caused a crack all the way around the bell housing accept at the bottom. I found it when the starter went turn the engine over.

Bill, if you can't get it done, I have a fresh CRT trans sitting on the shelf. Never installed, waiting for a project that will never happen. You can use it if in a pinch. it was built for an 850 HP heavy car, so it's a great piece.

I've seen 2 904's do this - 1 had been extensively cleaned up to remove all the casting seams, etc. and had a lot of material removed in that area; the other was a stock case. Both of them cracked after other driveline parts failed and the driveline unloaded under full power.

well the tranny's back together and I am waiting to pick up the converter in the morning, I did have a front U joint that was loose and I replaced it and the driveshaft had been balanced and no weights are missing, It all go's back in thursday and hopefully I can test it out saturday at Pacemaker's.
