Show me your big block valve covers - 09/04/10 11:54 PM

Just as everyone told me, I need aftermarket valve covers with the flange on the inside due to the Harland Sharp rockers I just installed on my stage VI heads. I would like to see all that are available. I know of 3 Indy, 440 source and ProComp, are there any others? Can you all post what you got? Thanks. Here's my old set up

I saw some of these on Sean's Charger and asked him where he got them. They are made by Unique Fabrication..they require some work to use, but they are..well, unique.

What is the issue?

Lots of Mopar racers are using Harland Sharp rockers and I haven't heard of this. I must be living under a rock, or all those guys are running Indy heads ???

The problem is that the top of the rockers come into contact with the side of the valve covers on my Stage VI heads.
Looks like 440 Source covers will do the trick

Indy no-logo covers on Stage VI heads.

BTW, HS rockers wouldn't fit correctly under these valve covers either. I wasn't that impressed w/ the HS stuff and this was the last straw on my decision to find a different brand of rockers.

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/06/10 04:26 PM

What exactly did you need to do to get them to fit?

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/06/10 05:26 PM

Harland sharp on stage vi with no logo indy covers.
Had to grind off a little on the top

I didn't. See what ToddP posted after me. I couldn't stand the idea of having to grind on the rockers to make 'em fit, and wasn't that impressed w/ the HS stuff anyway. I had two sets of them (1.6 and 1.5) and decided at that point to sell 'em and use something different.

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/07/10 07:54 PM

Thanks to Jughed, who is selling me his set of 440 Source covers at a very reasonable price. I borrowed the same covers from a friend to check fitment, and although they still come in contact with the top edge of the rockers, it looks as if I will be able to file on the inside lip to correct that problem.

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/07/10 08:24 PM

This must only be an issue w/ the stage VI heads?

I've had Harland Sharp rockers on factory iron heads, Edelbrock heads, and Indy SR heads and had no clearance issues w/ MP, Moroso, or Indy valve covers.

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/08/10 04:15 AM

Ive used several different kinds of valve covers on stage 6 heads with a msd dist. The only time I had trim for fit, was with the m.p. valve covers.....
Posted By: mopar65

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/08/10 04:58 AM

If you use ricks dist you wont have to clear any thing. On my 440 with indy ez heads there was no way in heck a 440 source billet dist would clear. unless i wanted to cut the crap out of my heads. which i did not so i bought Ricks new dist and everything fits great now. here is some pics that will show you what i am talking about. thanks Mopar65

As I stated in another rocker-related thread: "They're heavy, they're bulky (and not where it would make the rockers better, either), they're too long for decent geometry w/ many applications, the balls of the last sets of adjusting screws I saw from them looked like they were machined by somebody w/a wood rasp, instead of a lathe. They do seem to be a good fit for Indy heads, though."

I like the shafts and the hold-downs. The rockers haven't changed since the 1980s and could stand the benefit of a modern redesign, IMO. Plenty of people are totally sold on them. I'm not.

I have a set of those Cal Custom covers. I have been using these aluminum Moroso's with Harland Sharp rockers/906 heads, for several years, only because they matched the paint...Nice wiring too!

I like those, too...but wish they offered a "no-logo" version. Right now, nobody offers the tall stock looking covers w/out a logo..at least I have not found any.

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/09/10 08:53 PM

Does to me !! The body and cap on both are very close to 4". Measuring at the widest points is just plain foolish when the unit can be rotated so those points clear the valve cover!
Posted By: B1Fish540

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/09/10 09:40 PM

Just from those pics you can see the base is smaller on the Firecore. The whole idea of the Fircore is that it is designed to be smaller and more valve cover friendly..and it is. I cannot vouch for the quality and performance, but the unit is more compact.

These are Barton's on re-pro Max Wedge heads - same as Indy's I believe.

A buddy milled the RBRE logo off (epoxied up where they were thin) and added our own logo!

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/09/10 11:36 PM

These are old Edelbrock chrome valve covers I had laying around. They were scratched some so I painted them orange and added the Max Wedge 426 stickers so they would look like a Max Wedge cover. I had noticed they are a bit taller then stock covers. Course I only run Isky iron ductile 1.5 rockers. Ron

Mine are pretty much the same as Ron's. I got'm off eBay for 20 bucks. They are cheapie chrome plated. Just sand and paint.

Love those Cal Customs!

I won't show you a picture, but I've been running HS rockers on my S6 heads with factory covers forever. At first I ovalled the holes and shoved the covers a little toward the intake and used a little (very little) hammer work on the covers. Last time I had it apart I took a close look at things and found it's only the end exh. rockers that interfere and these rockers have extra (unneeded) material in that spot. A little grinding on the 4 end rockers and everything clears fine with factory covers.
If you compare the intake and exhaust rockers, they use the same body, the only difference is where the adjuster is placed. The result of this is excess mass just to keep costs a little lower. I think it's time HS makes dedicated right and left rockers, it would reduce the mass and polar inertia while correcting the clearance problem.

Now to read what others have said...

Re: Show me your big block valve covers - 09/11/10 02:32 PM

Attention, everyone who has spent the big money for aluminum heads. DO NOT GRIND THEM just to fit the MSD distributor. Our mechanical distributor fits with plenty of clearance. It also will keep timing exact throughout your rpm range, which leads to zero retard, which leads to more topend. . Jim Guy is trying one out, and was blown away, so far, by the performance and fit of it. He is at MM in St Louis right now, testing it further. So far, he loves it..
