Can't 60ft, any suggestions (slips attached) - 09/04/10 05:57 AM

Last time I was at the track was in 2008 and my best 60ft was 1.487 and best ET was 9.747. I've made several mods, some added weight and some performance such as
1)New rear strange coil overs
2)New larger rear tires was 32x14.5 now 33x22.5
3)New wheels, had drag lights now alumastars
4)Had aluminum dash now has a factory dash
5)Had a lexan windshield now has glass
6)Had a cowl scoop now an open aero hood scoop
5)Added a flexplate cover
6)Added a chute
7)Fuel gauge on the fender
8)Added real head lights had simulated aluminum
So I've added some weight but the car scales at 2880 with me in it today. I was hoping the new larger tires and rear shocks would help my 60ft times but nope. Track prep was also not the best tonight. I'm planning to run tomorrow and next weekend to see if it's the same but I should be in the high 1.3's. I'm running 4:56 gears so when I went up to the 33in tire should I consider going up to 4:88 gears to help the torque? I've attached my log so you can see the difference from 2008 until 2010. I didn't get a new torque converter yet either. Gears or Converter if I need to help getting out of the hole? Sorry this is so damn long. Had a great time finally getting out again. Too bad it's September when I started racing this year. Any suggestions for getting out of the hole and staying in the 9's without removing the windshield and dash is appreciated.
Adam

Here's the actual slips. Sorry for sleeping on the tree but I had to knock the cob webs off.

Um, planning on giving us a body style, engine, trans, etc to work with. Because that 60' is way off for a big block with a 'Flite, but not so bad for a small block and a 'Glide.

if it's not spinning I would be looking at the converter, timing, cam timing. my 60' is in the 1.44s and im only running 10.40s 200lbs heavier than you.

I'd buy the next round of drinks for everybody if I could get my tank to 1.487.

For those that can't see his Excel attachment, Attached is a screen shot of his logbook for the recent runs .

The 2008 runs show better air, so they should be faster... and they are. From the difference in sixty foot between the two runs on 9-3-2010, it looks like it might be spinning the tires, so chassis work/tuning may be in order.

Re: Can't 60ft, any suggestions (slips attached) - 09/04/10 06:37 PM

Thanks Jim. It's 72 Cuda, tube chassis, 500ci, 727TF, Indy tunnel, it pulls hard on the top end. Lots of humidity last night so I'm not going to do any drastic changes until I get some more runs in this month. The converter is the same from the previous owner (5500 TCI converter w/ Trans King valve body), I never changed it when I dropped my new motor in. Weight was 2749 with driver prior to my mods. Now it’s 2880 so I’ve added 131 lbs. I’m running 34 deg of timing. I was alone so I couldn't get any video of the launch. I may have broken loose but if I did it wasn't excessive. Just doesn't feel like the front end wants to jump up or rear to squat like it should? I have not touched the 4 link since it was at the chassis shop.
I'm trying to figure out how to post a screen shot like Jim did with all my times. You have to open with Excel.

For Windows, hit print screen or if you only want the active window (not full screen), hit Alt print screen, and the image will be in your clipboard. Just paste.

You will probably need to resize first.

Here's an attempt at attaching a jpg of some runs from 2008 to compare.

Really need to know if the tires were spinning or dead hooked. Dead hooking does not always equal a better short time. Without some video we're all just guessing.

Re: Can't 60ft, any suggestions (slips attached) - 09/04/10 08:46 PM

what size TCI? imo the TCI is not a quality converter. thats the first place I would be concerned with. and I bet you get 10 people saying their's is fine

Re: Can't 60ft, any suggestions (slips attached) - 09/04/10 09:04 PM

I've been putting off getting a new converter but I never really heard pros or cons to the TCI brand. It's an 8 inch converter but I've been planning to pick up a Coan converter over the winter that's custom built for my engine specs based on my time slips. Sorry but I'm a loner, no one to video any of the runs for me I'd love to be able to see what the rear tires are doing compared to how it feels in the car. I'll see if I can beg someone to come to the track and get some footage. Sounds like that's probably step 1.

Re: Can't 60ft, any suggestions (slips attached) - 09/05/10 02:21 AM

With those 60's being all over the place I would be looking into learning about your 4 link setup and your shock set ups. That thing is not working. Even if the converter was not for your combo it still would at least be consistent.

Re: Can't 60ft, any suggestions (slips attached) - 09/06/10 02:56 AM

Should I start with the front shock settings? Set the front shocks to the softest dampning settings and leave the rears as is and see what happens? If the front doesn't react quick enough by popping up on launch then I'll start adjusting the rears to a softer setting as well. It just seems like the suspension is too stiff and not a quick extension for take off. Then 4 link last.

It all starts with the rear and if your 4 link is all
wrong ... well it wont do anything... back first
then the front has to transfer to keep the back
planted... what is your IC length and height

Re: Can't 60ft, any suggestions (slips attached) - 09/07/10 12:38 AM

Just got the car back from a professional chassis shop. They put new rear coil overs on as requested, scaled the car, and adjusted the pinion angle. I'm sure the 4 link is close and the shocks/tire pressure is more of the issue. I'll jack it up and find the C of G and then measure from the rear tires to get my numbers and double check the 4 link settings.

This seems to be a good reference for what I'm using to find my measurements for initial settings (Instant Center etc). http://www.motorsportsvillage.com/suspension1.html
