I'm talking about the kind of combination that you pulled out of an ailing C-body that clearly didn't deserve it and flogged it religiously.

Just fun, low buck, proven combinations...

Best I did was about a 11.50 a few times before I spun a stock rod bearing. Dead stock bottem end turning 6000 RPM mike

I was always impressed with Zippy's low-budget build he had for awhile. That thing hauled for what it was.

14.01
Yanked a 383 2 barrel out of a 1965 wagon with 87,000 on the odometer. Took it to car wash to clean it. Changed to double roller timing chain, aluminum intake and 625 Carter. I had an old .484 cam but we didn't bother putting it in. Schumacher headers going into 3 inch x-pipe with Dynomax Super Turbos. 3.91 gears. Old 26 inch slicks left over from my buddies Comet. Pulled 340 out of Dart and put this 383 in to get ready for low deck stroker. Ended up with stock(er) 383 for 5 years.
Stock 383 14.01, stock(er) 383 11.62...

IN 1974 my 340 duster went 11.89 at national speedway with a stock bottom end and hooker headers, edelbrock torker intake and a holley 850, lakewood traction bars, open headers.4 speed, complete interior with wipers, total street/strip car. black exterior, white interior, hurst super shifter with line loc, cragar ss's. pretty good for that era.those were the days.
i went big blocks since those days, i havent been in a small block since but man we use to spin those motors back in the day.

I went 11.40's in a 3600 lb. car. Stock short block with hydralic cam, milled the heads .050, TM7 intake, headers. I do remember cutting valve reliefs by hand with a Dotco.

Pulled 440 out of 72 New Yorker 86,000 miles on odometer installed an old .572 Ultradyne solid cam and Torkker intake never took the heads off. Stuck it in my 70 GTX 4spd with 3.54 gears car easily weighed more than 4,000 pds and ran 12.80's for 2 years drove it everyday then pulled it out stuck stock cam and intake back in it when car was sold

12.06 in a 4000 pound car with a 6 pack and set of headers on a 133 thousand mile pullout from a 69 imperial...original timing chain and all.
That was a tough `ol dude....It was in the car for several years and finally gave up the ghost from several bottles of nitrous being ingested

That block and crank are still alive today in my current blower combo

We ran best of 10.56 with an original 72,000 mile 440 in a 68 R/T Charger...Of course we had a 6-71 bolted on top of it. It was a street car I had just after high school. Put another 3000 miles on it and about 30 passes before the head gaskets had enough

Re: How fast have you gone with a stock BB shortblock ? - 03/10/08 04:30 AM

I think I have posted it up on here, but I took a bone stock '72 440 that was originally in a New Yorker and I put it in my '83 pickup and pulled it out, and when I put it in our racecar I bet it had 80,000 miles on it at least, and put our Mopar intake on it with our flying toilet on alcohol and put it in our '67 Barracuda full blown racecar and it went 7.40's in the 1/8 mile, we took our 6.0 engine out and put this stock engine in it for my son to learn to drive it. Had to change the converter in the transmission, and had to go to a smaller pump and pills in the toilet. We won a little money with it in the 7.50 index at our local track.

And the timing chain had more slack than the one above, and it also had one cylinder leaking about 80%.

A 1976 400 stock bottom end
A set of max wedge heads.A 620,630 roller and a bunch of spray.
Runs 6.60s on the spray and has been together for two years. This is the best bang for the buck I've ever had.

Thanks, appreciate that

I just followed the Direct Connection 13.5 second combo as close as I could afford at the time, which meant I bought the recommended cam, but I skipped the good valve job and the cylinders were nowhere near straight or round

Flogging it for 13 years and knowing it really well helped alot too.

I don't know my current combo anywhere near that well, darned real life keeps getting in the way of testing...

Stock pistons .150 in the hole helps alot with clearance

Sure they don't have any compression but the big cam fits fine

Re: How fast have you gone with a stock BB shortblock ? - 02/19/10 04:41 PM

Just last year my 67 Satellite still had the original 383 130,000 mile short block in it, and its orig. 516 heads with stock valves. It was a 2bbl motor, so in the 9:1 neighborhood. Wearing a holley 750 and an RPM intake, with a Delta .496 hyd. cam and a set of used headers, it went 13.73 @ 101. I flogged that 383 to 6400 RPM, and it never missed a beat. held 40 psi of oil pressure until the day it came out.

I'd gone as quickly as 12.2s at 112 MPH in a 3700# car... until it threw a rod. Ya' can't trust those OEM rod bolts once they've had all those miles run up on them.

Also see the "stock smogger 440" thread in the best of/archives section.
Mine ran a 12.0 at 110 in a 64 dodge .. .528 cam.

My NOS rollers have 114 lobe sep. That helps a ton.The Max wedge heads are cut a mile.So it has some compression.
