I wouldn`t want 10 qts splashing around in my motor............I usually run 6 qts in my 8 qt pan.

On my wet sump engines I run the level to just below
the ADD point.... about 1 1/2 qts low... I dont want
the oil on the crank weights... this is with a deepened
pan.. it holds about 8 1/2 qts

I'm not sure what pan you are running, but I have run a Moroso deep, center sump pan forever with 8 qts of oil. Changed to a Milodon SS pan, with swinging pick up and external line, 10 qts with same dip stick, oil is approx 1.25" lower on th stick. Milodon says that this pan cap is 9 qts plus filter. I have a remote mounted filter that holds a Qt by itself, not including lines.
Bottom line, I lowered the oil level by over a inch AND added 2 qts cap.

I don't run a dip stick. The sump is in the wrong spot. I dump my oil after almost every event to take a look then add a little if needed from there.

The object of a deep oil pan,ls to keep the oil below the crank. Not to hold more oil.

The pan manufacturers should just say how deep the pan is,not a capacity.

If your stock pan holds 5 qts plus one for the filter,I would run six quarts in the pan and one in the filter. Run the engine and mark the dipstick.

I would have to fully agree. I had a Moroso 7qt pan and before i bolted it to the engine, i wanted to see how much it held before it got up into the main part of the pan--and thus into the carnkshaft. To my surprise (as i didn't know all this at the time), it held 5.5 qts in the sump part only.

When i bolted it to the engine, i filled it from the valley before the intake went on (so the oil wasn't all trapped in the heads) and then remarked the dipstick once i gave time for it to settle all in the pan. I used an electric engraver to make a new mark, i have also used a hacksaw blade back and forth a couple of times to just scribe a new line in the stick.

I think with the pan on the engine now, your going to have a tough time determining what really needs to be in there without getting up into the crank.

I agree - but this assumes that the new pick-up has been lowered by the same amount as the bottom of the sump (e.g., sump is 4" lower than the original pan, pick-up is 4" lower).
If the pick-up is stock, or at the same position, you may need the stock full mark just to be sure it's always safely submerged.
How close is the pick-up head to the sump bottom?

We usually go with the recommended capasity of the pan(including the filter)an 8qt pan(7 in the sump,1 in the filter).Generally you want to keep the sump with an adaquate supply of oil at all times. Some times(depending on the type of heads or the drainback time)you can have as much as 3 quarts in flow as well as suspension while the engine is at maximum RPMs.Years ago it was reported by the Ramchargers that a Hemi would circulate 10 qts of oil 3Xs during a adverage high 9 or low 10 second pass.
