Cam change - gains ?Bullet or Hughes - 08/26/10 12:56 AM

I currently run the purple 509 cam in my 440+0.055
10.78 comp,pocket ported stealth heads,crane rockers,M1 single plane,mighty demon 825,1 7/8 hooker comps with 3" exhaust to diff,aero chamber muffs,3.9 gears
What could i hope to pick up if i upgraded the cam.
i am looking at the:
Bullet #3030412,247/255@050 - 530/547 lift
Hughes#HEH4650BL,246/250@050 - 569/576 lift
Has anyone experiance useing these cams?is there a better choice, comp etc?
this is a street strip car,and yes i happen to like hydraulics.
thanks again for all help

Well first my motor was similar to yours..with a crane hyd roller 509 lift..and I guess my combnation was ready for more cam..I sent my cam to bullit and after their regrind to 530-530 I honestly picked up almost 5 tenths with no other changes at all!!!went from 12.98 to 12.50..from 105 mph to 107 mph.. thats the fact ,,3700 lb car as aero dynamic as a brick..

Let Tim Goolsby @ Bullet pick your cam, you won't be disappointed One of the sharpest dudes in the biz.

Bullett (who are mostly the old UltraDyne gang) make awesome cams

Pretty sure Bullet is making the Hughes HR grinds

I would encourage you to switch over to a solid lifter while you are at it. It will be better everywhere.

The UltraDyne/Bullet 255 @.050 .582 lift flat tappet is a strong performer in a mild 440!

Dan Sullivan (DanBob) here on moparts has a mild 440 in his yellow duster that flat out honks!

- 10.60's at 126 @ 3450lbs N/A
- 9.40's @141 on NOS

- .055 over 440.
- 10.5 to 1 compression.
- MCH cnc Edelbrock RPM heads
- Mopar M1 Single Plane intake
- Ultradyne/Bullet cam .582 lift, 255 @ .050
- 1.5 rockers
- 4.10 gears / 315/60/15 drag radials
- SS springs
- 3450lbs race ready

Hmmm, wonder if Hughes would admit that??

I with I had a sticker that said "I LOVE my Bullet cam"

Tim LISTENED to my combo, asked detailed questitons. Then they shipped the cam when he said he would AND the car runs pretty darn good!

I will go nowhere else in the future...

Years ago, Engle were grinding cams for Hughes, so the Hughes range were a combination of the Engle lobes. There really aren't alot of companies that actually design the lobes themselves, they're just grinding other people's work.

Bullet's stuff is of good quality and service, you could also try Mike Jones @ http://www.jonescams.com/2006catalog_001.htm

A Comp Cam spec'd out by Brian at IMM in California or Dwayne Porter at Porter Racing Heads in Vermont would also be worth looking at.

Speaking of Engle, their stuff is worth looking into as well. I'm running one of their new KV-3 grind solids, which gives you .573 lift with a streetable 252* on 109*.

Although I don't have my combo dialed in just yet, I don't think the cam is holding me back!

Re: Cam change - gains ?Bullet or Hughes - 08/27/10 11:26 PM

thanks for all replys again.
just got a reply from Kirk @Bullet
recommends their CRB304/312-H8
247/255@050 530/551 lift
this is around what i thought i may need.probly still use the current springs if still ok and won't have as much worry re clearances.block was decked and heads cut to get 78/9 cc
as to going solid?with the rev range i use, traps at 6-6100RPM i don't know if there is a benefit to be had.
this is a just a future proofing plan at this stage.

Tex I saw you are running the hooker comps with the 1 7/8 pri which is decent but they have the 3" collector which is barely big enough for a decent 350. With that size a cam you probably would drop .15-.20 by cutting off the 3" behind the cloverleaf and welding on a 3 1/2" collector. It's a cheap (maybe 125 vs 400-up for a decent set of 2" pri's)and easy upgrade with a bandsaw and any sort of decent welding skills. What you got is obviously working well, I just think from my experience you're likely leaving at least an extra 30+ lb/ft available up to 500rpm higher on the table and maybe 25-30 hp up top all else being equal.

The collector is limiting the peak torque RPM which in turn lowers your HP trajectory from that RPM up. I like the comps just not the collector.

that and the new cam you might have a legit 10 second flat tap juicer!!

What lobe spread and ICL did bullet recommend?

with the corked exhaust wider is generally better along with not a lot more exhaust duration (extra duration with a smallish exhaust port works best when it's got some place unrestricted to go or it'll be rpm limited)...I think he might be thinking you had a 3 1/2 collector?

I respect what the guys at bullet recommended, but I would say that the your existing 509 cam is not a particularly fast rate of lift cam, and is easy on springs.
The Bullet hydraulic cam you are considering will have a much faster rate of lift and will be more likely to send your valvetrain into unstable behavior at a much lower RPM threshold.
Stiffer and stiffer valvesprings usually just compound the hydraulic lifter troubles.

Not trying to beat this topic into the ground, but in the spirit of "future proofing," (and if it were me,) I would go to a solid flat tappet now and eliminate the potential for valve instability and float headaches later.

The engine will be apart and you will be purchasing a new cam and lifters anyway...

Re: Cam change - gains ?Bullet or Hughes - 08/28/10 01:25 AM

Wize,
thanks for your thoughts.
Problem with going 3 1/2 inch on collector is i have a 3" system,my class is mandated an exhaust with mufflers with noise limits.
i guess i could go to 3 1/2 for the system,it ends in front of the diff
welding i can do no worries in my shop
Bullets lobe sep is 108
intake centreline is 104

Re: Cam change - gains ?Bullet or Hughes - 08/28/10 01:32 AM

Topbrent,
thanks for your ideas/feedback.
would you be looking at dual or a beehive style spring?
i know Hughes only spec a single spring with damper for their cam
if going solid what size should i look at?
maybe a little more duration,255-260, with a round 570-580 gross.allowing for losses due to lash.
i was trying to avoid solid cos i'm lazy.i don't really want to pull the heads and i am unsure whether the stealths will take a dual spring with out machining
