What's are your ideas for a street car?

What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/03/10 10:45 PM

After 21 years of Drag Racing it seems that I have just completely lost interest in it, mostly due to the fact that we run around every day with our 10 year old boy's sports. The only thing we do is go get ice cream in it every now and then.

I think the best thing for me to do is to start over with a clean slate, I've seen street cars with a roll bar that didn't have the cross bar so you can utilize the back seat, with kickouts at the bottom of the main hoop for strength, or maybe a bolt in bar. Front bucket seats that tilt forward to get in the back seat, electric window kit, maybe a stick shift tranny , street tires maybe fat ones at all 4 corners, or bigs and littles??

It would have to be a mild pump gas motor so maybe a small block turbo that could be driven anywhere and still be fast. I want something I can DRIVE, with the family in it, no slicks, no oil pan or headers dragging the ground, maybe a BobsProFab front end with custom headers and oil pan for ground clearance.

Slicks, spooled rear ends, no back seat, loud and obnoxious, headers dragging, it's all fine when you're racing alot, but it gets annoying just watching it sit under a car cover all the time. Although I might run it this weekend finally!

What can you guys add to this? I started a pro touring thread awhile back and loved some of the ideas, a new style Hemi with a supercharger would be cool.

Take some compression out go smaller on carb put in stick tranny/ make roll bar passenger friendly. go have fun.

i like big n litles as for the cage well if its fast it needs one to keep yourself safe
newstyle hemi or a very wellbuilt smallblock with supercharger is something i would love to do, not any supercharger i would go for a Autorotor or Whipple with fuelinjection to keep it all under a low scoop and make stupid power on E85 but thats my look at it

Sell everything and buy a van so you can haul the team to get ice cream.

Something WAY odd-ball .....

Like a mid-engined Caravan with a 500 incher that you have to enter from the side sliders... that will run 12 flat through the muffs .... on DOT-type tires.

Bob,

I'm in the same boat and going the same direction. Just having a hard time finding the RIGHT stock type "roller" car. It will be a Mopar and stick shift. BB or SB with A/C. Around 500-600 HP N/A. Finding one turnkey is probably the best option if its built right, but will take some time looking.

But......as far as a "street" car goes my favorites on here were Dave's blown Duster, LAR 414's Dart, Chip's HEMI Cuda, Pranis' Charger, UNLAWFL, STEFF's Chally when it was a streeter, Frannie's GTX, Rick's GTX and Jack Iron's Jr's GTX..........those guys got it right. Haven't been on here for a very long time, so I am sure there are more well done street rides I've missed out on.

Bob, good luck on your quest.......

hey Wes!

"so maybe a small block turbo that could be driven anywhere and still be fast."

Hmm..sounds EXACTLY like my build! My requirements for my turbo build are AC/PS/PB, nice sound system, good idle (.540 lift, .224 duration, 114 lsa), 3.54 gears, quiet, but still run 9's when needed.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 01:09 AM

A lot comes into play here as to what is "streetable" and many different opinions too. Heater,ac not plastic race seats and room for kids as you stated all play a roll. For me I love crawling over a roll bar,car shaking at stop lights, the looks on peoples faces and the gas station............face it, we love the attention or we wouldn`t be driving these things. I`m cool w/my dart the way it is and I`ve driven over an hour at a time w/out incident but roller cams, loose verts etc do need attention so it`s your call. I say big block 9.1 and turbos....

We converted our Dart to a four speed stick and it was the best thing we've ever done. It has a comfy front bench seat and room for all four kids. It can idle without overheating through Detroit construction traffic. It's driven to the track and driven home.

Did I mention it's a four speed? IMO that trumps all automatics, even ones that run 9's.

Bob, you got to keep it "loud and obnoxious" no matter what you go with.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 02:13 AM

I love my Dart and I'll definitely enjoy it this year and 'maybe' next summer but I need to make a change soon, it would take way too much money to convert this car to what I want to do, it would be easier to use the money to start over.

I love the new Chally's and may go that route, but it would be weird for me not to have an old muscle car. I think the stick shift would be fun but the car will have to have some steam, I've driven 12 second stick shift cars and in my opinion they are not as fun as a 9 second auto.

I've been searching for info this week on the whipple chargers but haven't found much for Mopar kits, and the Brand X kits seam pricey$$$.

Butch I would do that but I think in the long run I'd miss wrenching in the garage.

Thumper, I've spent my whole life loving the stuff you mentioned but it just doesn't do much for me anymore.

Thanks Josh, I've sold some nice Mopars but this one I'm pretty attached to, it's gonna take awhile to make a decision LOL. Most people would be thrilled to own a car like this that can be driven on pump gas, run 9's through the exhaust on a 10.5 tire, and fit right in at car shows but I just don't have time to use it more than 3 or 4 times a year, kind of a waste.
Your Duster looks awesome!

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 02:58 AM

Okay, the wheels are hideous. Sell them before you even pick it up and take some replacements.

Okay, you will have to find a Challenger manual trans and swap out some stuff. 15K minus whatever you can sell those wheels for is a great start.

The aftermarket support is good, and having a wagon with A/C and room WITH a supercharger and clutch? Sweet.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 03:16 AM

My idea of a street car is exactly what I'm currently working on.......70' Road Runner, 31" ET Streets, Narrowed Ford 9", Ladder Bar'd WITH a Back Seat (Benefit of a B-Body), SRT8 Hemi & Turbo 400 trans. I'm almost finished with it. I'll have it at the Norwalk Classic. For now, what ever it runs, it runs, ET wise & on the street, drive the wheels off it. Long term plans are maybe a Procharger & 5 speed trans....

RodStRace, I think those Magnums are pretty cool.

DusterDave I love that idea, I've also always liked your blower motor, streetable yet very powerful.

Steff that sounds really cool! I can't wait to see it. That will be a great cruiser. I've learned ALOT the last few years, I know I could find a decent roller, and build everything the way 'I' want it, and it could run 8's in the 1/4 mile. But I know it would do the same thing as my Dart, sit in the garage under a cover. I think at least for now, it's time to move onto something I can cruise and not worry about all the SFI stuff, NHRA license, engine diaper, and all the extra cost of towing and racing.

Bob, your worst than me

keep the Dart if you really like it that much and de tune or sell drive train and build it more streetable.

i do miss my old 68 Cuda Pro Street car i built many years ago

340 pump gas motor(stroked), drive any where including the track and click off some 12.00 passes
full interior, no cage
the hole family got to enjoy it.
it was a blast to crusie and turned heads every where i drove it.
you cant tell from the pic but the wife had a smile on her face

sold it to build my 63 N/SS car
family was not happy with me

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 04:17 AM

Here's my take....

My idea for a street car is simple. MAKE IT STREETABLE.
Nothing that needs constant maintenance, nothing extremely loud, nothing that runs hot, etc.....

Mild street engine. Big cubes, big power, whatever, but RELIABLE and comfortably DRIVABLE.
Something that has more cooling system than it has a right to.
Ground clearance is a must.
Doesn't have to sit like a 4x4 but a speed bump shouldn't be an obstacle.
Reasonable gearing. If you can't travel for long distances at 60mph it gets old quickly.
Functioning wipers, lights, brakes, steering etc that doesn't require the word "borderline" in any way....

A street car can mean many things, but a true street car should be an enjoyment to drive, not a constant staring at gauges and working on the car, for me at least. It takes the fun out of it.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 04:28 AM

I like my stuff fairly quite too....it must idle fairly smooth.......and I HAVE to have a stick in EVERY car I own...... It's not super fast (10.60's @ 127 so far on just motor through exhaust manifolds).....but it's a FUN car to drive around (I'm not one of those guys that gets a thrill out of driving for more than an hour in ANY old car though.....it just doesn't do anything for me ).......

It could use a low profile pan, but the roads aren't that horrible around here......

I wish there was an iron low deck block available so I could put a 200 shot on it and have some REAL fun with it........

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 04:35 AM

My idea... 70 Challenger, 496 B, 5 speed, EFI +/- 550 HP, AC. 3.23 rear. Re-enforced K, re-enforced control arms, big sway bars and T bars. Should be good for 150+ MPH with a few aero mods and hood pins (winter project). I also need to raise the exhaust system after getting rid of a frame rail mounted A1000 pump... which forced me to lower muffs for clearance. The in tank pump is a big improvement (Rickey's Hot Rod shop).

The new Challenger is cheaper... but slower in all respects and less fun. In fairness, the new Challenger would be better for a long, 500+ mi, trip.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 04:48 AM

ProSport, I know exactly how you feel, 3 kids...My two boys are nonstop with sports now, and they are only 6 and 8, between coaching their, working, pursuing my bachelors, amd training for Marathons my '65 has been sitting a lot the last year, and I have two '66 Plymouths that are sitting in peices that I'm slowly working on...We just got a new challenger to enjoy as a family and it has been awesome, granted I only got to drive it for 3 days before this deployment but the whole family loves it.

Now my plan for a street car is my '66 Satelite; full interior, 6 point roll bar, 360 Magnum motor, possible turbo charged or turbo slant, and steel wheels, nothing fancy, simple, reliable, if it runs 12s I'll be happy. In the meantime, my '65 is heading up to Wisconsin this fall for my brother to race for a season or two while I get caught up on all my projects. And when I get the bug to go racing can load the whole fam up in the Challenger or Race my dad's Daytona to get my fix...

Good Luck,
Curtis

It sounds like you have a good idea in what you want out of a car, and you already own a great platform. I would say make a plan, and adapt your car to fit your plan, save the race parts for down the road. Who knows maybe your son will want to do some racing with Dad in another five years? Look for some four speed swap parts and convert it, save the auto for later.

Prosport, I do understand where you are comming from. That kind of thinking is what laid out my build plans for my car as well. But it is so much work to get it to that point, I sometimes wish I would have just spent some $ and picked up a nice little finished car like a late 60's barracuda.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 12:40 PM

Bob, I'd keep your current ride and maybe tone it down a little to suit your needs. It's a beautiful car that runs really good. You can make it more streetable and still have an easy 10 sec car, which is still plenty fast for a street driven car.

I definitely would NOT buy a new Challenger SRT-8. I'll keep my opinion of those cars to myself since this a mopar board and people will bash me b/c I'm not a diehard mopar guy.

My dad has a nice street car that's fun as all get out to drive. It's a '69 road runner, rotisserie restored, stock interior with a bench seat. I built him a mild 440 w/ a 6 pack setup on it, hemi 4 speed, 3.55 geared 8 3/4 rear, and Vintage air A/C. The car makes close to 500 hp and blows cold air all day. It looks bone stock on the outside, the interior, and under the hood except for headers and the A/C. It is a blast to drive! It's a 12 sec ride and I have about as much fun driving it around as I do my 9 sec cuda. Makes me want to put a Jerico in the cuda.

It's all in what you want to deal with. Personally, I'm happy with my cuda as is. It is hot as crap during the summer, but it's worth it to me when you slam the throttle wide open. The only thing I change from street driving to racing is a different set of mufflers (race = 4" bullets, street = 4" flowmasters). Everything else stays the same. Unless you count removing the air filter.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 01:02 PM

Bob,
IF it helps at all, I've never had so much fun with my car, as I do now. It's a stick. Maybe that's something you definately should do, even if it's slower. It's just plain, MORE FUN.

My best auto time was 11.0 at 120mph with a 1.56 60'
My best Stick time is 11.4 at 121mph with a 1.68 60' (only 7 runs so far!)

But the car leaves HARDER with the stick and it's a blast to drive. WAY WAY WAY more fun now.

I know what you mean about time and family. I don't drive my car nearly as much now (5yr old and 3 month old baby girl now!). But they all fit fine in the car with no roll cage.

Just put in some 3 point harness retractable seat belts front and rear, and you'll have a safe street car that you can have FUN with at the track a couple times a year.

I'd put a stick in the Dart, take out the cage, de-tune the engine, and have FUN with it for a bunch of years. You can always ramp it back up later in life!

I could never do racing all the time, at this stage of my life. Maybe 20 years from now I can do it more.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 01:57 PM

Bob,

Your entering the same point with the kids that I've been in for a while. Which is why my car still only runs 11.70's. I don't need a roll bar and the car is very streetable. If it's not raining, my boys and I have taken her to Little League practice and games all summer for the last 8 years. Same with my duaghter's soccer stuff in the fall. The wife and I use it on the weekends to do our errands around town and the old retired Chrysler guy at church really likes seeing me lay a patch leaving the parking lot on Sundays.

I street drive my Valiant at least 20+ times for each run it makes on the track. And I couldn't be happier.

It's fast enough to be respectable at the track, drives good enough to be safe on the street, and looks weird enough to get a TON of attention.

When my kids are grown and out, then I'll step it up and run low 10's, but I'm not willing to sacrifice the ability to haul the wife and 3 kids around when we want to go cruising around town.

LAR,

What stick set-up do you have in your car, and can it be streeted? Do you launch it off a button? Can it launch consistently? Been thinking of putting one in my Cuda. Its still got the stock clutch pedal under the floor matt and I thought a stick and some drag radials would make it a lot of fun.

A real street car...driveable without going broke, IMO....

Pump gas, run cool, charge properly, reasonable ride height.

Everything else......anything goes.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/04/10 04:05 PM

My setup is a stock 833 trans out of an E-body. McLeod Dual Disc RST clutch. Stock pedals, Hurst Super shifter III, Dana 60, ET Street (bias ply) tires at the track.

In order to eliminate some human error and be more consistent, I installed a roller switch on my clutch pedal. Very easy to wire up a cool two step rpm limiter. I push the clutch in, push one (momentary) button, and that "sets" the two step rpm limit. It won't come off that until the clutch is all the way out (launching). Then the relay goes to normal (no more two step) for all other shifts. Pretty cool. So it leave at the same rpm every run. No more finger co=ordination with the foot!

Seems very consistent, as I ran two runs with the same launch setup, and the 60' times were almost exact!

My dad and I both have our cars setup to spin the tires (limited) on the launch, to keep the rpms up and not break stuff. Clutch is locked 100% and doesn't slip at all.

If we get the tires to spin about 2 -3 revs (look at the video camera after a pass), that seems about right. I'm pulling the wheels and spinning the tires on the launch....kinda "early pro-stock like". Works great. Got to use Bias ply tires, because drag radials don't like to recover consistently, once they start spinning.

I power shift all the gear changes and that's with a 100% stock trans! No proshifting, no faceplates,.... Stock 23 spline. Can drive it on the street 100% normal, like the day it came from Detroit.

I'm loving it!

I have been helping my friends drop LS motors in there old cars.

buy a cheap intake and throw a carb on with a MSD box that runs the ignition. that is where its at!! these new Hemi motors need to drop in price a little and we will be able to do the same thing.

i have a friend i helped slap a turbo on a basically stock LS motor. he has like no money in this setup and runs about what i run. so it has to be making over 700hp. and he has never put race gas in the car either.

the tall valve covers and mod man intake that Indy makes for the Hemi look period correct with a modern twist.

I cant wait for prices to come down on these junk yard hemi engines

Bob, keep what you have... Just like Chip, I'm NOT a big fan of the new Challengers... Detune, the Dat, make it more user friendly in the interior department, and drive it. Hey I have 2 STREET cars sitting in my garage right now, and neither one has been outside since my Dad and brother brought them here to store them... Neither one has the time to come take them out , so it's not just a race car thing. Other commitments will be there just like now.

This is kind of a epidemic or it could be something a lot of us Moparts 35-45 year olds can get through together.

I have tossed around the idea of caging my car for a couple of years now. I'm kinda glad I didn't so I guess for now I will slow down a little and enjoy while I still can.
As for the wagon my dream is to put a new Hemi and a 5spd manual in it and beat the hell out of it. But Family 1st

i think whipple may have something in the works for the new generation hemi, for a LA smallblock i have only found two options and i have thought about a third
1: indy modman intake for LA or magnum motors with a just a adaptor plate.
2: custom built for real low profile (alot more money 2000$ and up for just a manifold)
3: this is something i havent looked deeper into but it may be possible to use a smallblock chevy intake with adaptorplates and some machinework since it looks like a smallblockmopar intake is alitle wider compared to a SBC but i dont have this confirmed but the port layout is fairly close

twinscrews can be fairly easy to hide under a low scoop and will make stupid boost only drawback is the cost and they have a whine all of there own

I love my SRT Challenger.
It's 4300#s of luxury and style. And at 1200 miles has went 8.60's in the 1/8. That's fast enough to get your attention. I got a win in it already as well. And I haven't touched it yet.
My wife has drove mine and likes it's ride over her camaro and it seats five.
Just something tothink about.

I'd like to do up an early A-body sedan with a modern 5.7 Hemi and 5 speed.

For now I'm happy with my '63 330 that's going together with very mild 440, 3.55's and sure-grip in the rear.

Last car I did like this got decent mileage (14-15mpg@70mph) on the highway and was very pleasant to drive around town.

Thank you.........NOTHING takes the place of a cool and FAST old muscle car and that`s why most people/families have more than one car..........

Already running on pump gas and through an exhaust system. I run 93 octane on the street and mix in one gallon of 110 at the track as an additive.

I had a good conversation with my chassis friend tonite, if I do decide to let the Dart go we have a good game plan to build one the way I want it. It would cost way too much money to convert this car and it's too nice of a setup to tear apart.

LOL, you got me there. Losing interest just comes from not having time to enjoy a car with slicks and a roll cage. I'm planning on finally hitting the track this weekend and I'm actually excited about it!

Bob,
You would be missing the speed and all that you love in your car in about 6 weeks. The next 6 years and all the sports will be gone before you know it. I am sure your son will like the racing with you and therefore you would be changing the car back to race in a few years. Leave it the way it is and enjoy when you can. As you know, I have two nice street cars and I have about as much time for them as I do the Dartport. It is a hassle but nothing beats it when we do get out.

Bob - I'm in the same situation as yourtself. Family life and kids demanding much more of my time, so I wanted to have something all purpose. I think my Challenger turned out to be a pretty good compromise. Havn't run it yet, but should be good for low 11's or maybe better. And I've had my kids out in it several times this summer. (I almost added a roll bar this winter, but really glad I didn't)

Anyhow, Im sure others will disagree on this, but IMO the 11 second range will give you the most all around fun in a street car. No cage necessary, smoother idle, lower cost to build and easier on parts, no trailers, get in and go without hesitation, family friendly, drive to work or the track, whichever.

Don't get me wrong a 9 second blast is fun, just many more compromises.

I agree with 10secgtx, we are of the transitioning age bracket. We'll be back building the race cars when our kids are older (most likely for them to drive!)

and actually what I'm shooting for....although I prefer old school...carbs through the hood, no a/c, no radio, back seat, no cage, radical bullet to a point....just a local fun ride

I am finding out that I actually prefer building them more than racing them .... crap I must be getting old

What in the hell does age have to do with it. Opinions vary here`s mine............do what you need to do and if you want to go slow then buy the new junk stock offerings and WISH you would have never sold or changed your car cos of a "mid-life mood swing".................

I'd never sell the Old Classic...just get a new SRT. Couple kids...get a Charger then. WAY more room then the Challenger. Also you can pick them up WAY cheaper which makes keeping the other one much easier to handle.

~5k worth of mods, and you can hang with Z06's...in your 4 door family car

You're right its not an age thing, however we happen to be at the age where our children are requiring more of our attention...and as a responsible parent we focus more on their needs than our own. Not sure how wanting a more streetable car for the family means your hanging up your ball sack, but whatever. Back in the day I had a roller cammed 12-1 street car too, and it was fun until it was no longer fun...for me anyway. I also rode crotch rockets when I was younger, and swore I would always have a bike. Havn't had a bike in 15 years. Life happens and we adjust, thats all.

Btw, I don't think anyone is suggesting to trade his hot rod for a mini van here...

Not everybody has as much testosterone as you, Thumper..lol And if you have to ask you dont understand. After so many "mood swings" you finally stay swung..to compromiseing. Unless a guy can afford more than one ride, age and family concerns win out. I'm talking about the "average" week end warrior, but some guys, and you may be one of them, are addicted to the 1/4 mile they whole life. And thats cool too.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/05/10 09:27 PM

Thumper, Tony was just referring to the fact that alot of us here are in that time period where the kids are in sports every night. It really does make you lose interest in race cars, I never thought it would but it does.
You guys have really helped me see things from different perspectives. My son is my life, and he has zero interest in cars but that's alright. I think when he gets closer to driving age he will take up a much bigger interest in cars.

The funny thing is, I keep thinking about selling the Dart to build something more streetable and family friendly but I really won't have any spare time to do it LOL.

dont take this the wrong way but i hope your ready for him to be a much smaller part of your life soon. there will come a point when he wants his freedom from you. not saying you wont still be close, but theres going to be alot of times when you will see very little of him and it will be his choice.

i think you would be surprised how much you would enjoy having an old muscle car thats not as fast but can easily replace the family car if you want to run to the store, go to ball games and shuttle the kids around. my wife and i hardly ever drive one of our pickups or our pt when we run around together. my main mode of transpertation is my 68 satellite 4 speed. i dont remember when i dove something else to work.

I understand guy`s and respect the fact that you have to do what you have to do but it`s just not gonna happen in my life time that`s all. Been a gear head since I was 10 years old, went to different tracks watching my uncle race and NOTHING feels better to me(mechanically that is )than jumping in my dart to get a cup of mud or fetch car parts thumpin down the road.....NOTHING. But, I`m single and live my life day-by-day which could explain some of my interesting events in the last few years. Last thaught; went to Irwindale 1/8th mile track last night and hate the fact that 80% of the cars are new SLOW cars........guess it`s a sign of the times.........for SOME.

Re: What's are your ideas for a street car? - 08/06/10 05:48 PM

I have a street/strip car, it was built for that purpose, nothing more and nothing less. I put a roll bar in it this summer, over the winter I mini tubbed it and installed a new Dana. It will probably slow down some from a combination of less gear and more weight, but thats ok. I like the 4.10 gear compared to the 4.30s, its more fun to drive.

I live out in the country and there is really nothing close to drive to. It was driven to work last week, 17 miles each way and did fine with the exception of the fuel issues, that hopefull will be fixed when it goes out again. The tempature was around 95 when I left work and it barely ran over 180.

I struggled with the roll bar decesion but it came down to being safe. It has gone 6.61 @ 102 in the 1/8. Plus no one really goes anywhere with me when I drive it. My wife thinks its to hot, loud and rides to rough. My youngest stepchild just turned 17 and really has no interest in cars, all he wants to do is play drums.

I will at some point buy or build a driver, something with air and a little pep. The Dart will always be what it is now, a hot rod.

Ditto!!

I've been, finally, making some headway on an 80 Cordoba LS, silver, with maroon gut. Tempted to do the Caltracs or go old school and do ladder bars and floaters. Mine will get a 90 360 roller motor at first to keep the a/c functional. Once I find some aftermarket brackets to mount the axial style compressor it's a 440 or 400/451 all the way.

This topic hits home for me in a big way. Didn't get to play with a racecar as much as I would have liked to before the kiddies arrived and now I've accumulated enough cars & parts to build soemthing dedicated to the track and a comfy street strip car too. Trouble is when I take the family out in the retro-cruiser, I like to be comfortable.

Personally, I think you need to trade yours for a Turbine Bronze, high 10 low 11 sec, 68 Dart street machine. No roll bar in the way. Runs fine on pump swill at the track all day long, and still holds it's own at car shows, if you choose.

But that's just my opinion

You guys have some very nice and fast street cars. My ideal of a street car is one that you can get in drive and have fun. I had a nice and some what fast 65 plymouth and by the time i was done it turned out to be a race only car.which towards the end got wear it was not fun.by that i mean the only time i got to run it was at the track and one year it rained so much we did not get very many times to race. so most of the time it just sat there.so I have finally built some thing that i can race and drive it on the street once in the while.which is my 73 dodge dart. my goal was to build a car that i could run on pump gas and run 10.50 in the 1/4. which i have came close to allready.i ran whats in my sig untill i broke my 8-3/4. oops sorry for rambling. i say just build what you want and have fun. here is a pick of my dart. thanks mopar65
