That is the old Howland Dragstrip in Howland, Ohio, just outside of Warren. It closed in 1964 and is slowly being overtaken by a housing development.

Yep, I thought that looked familure. There's a Katies Corners Ice Cream Stand basicly setting on what would have beem the starting line.

If I remember the story right, the guy who owned the farm it sat on was a WW I Pilot and he built a runway to land his planes on after the war. I remember seeing something about him in the Howland Hardware store on the corner of 46 and old 82. (I grew up in Vienna 7-8 miles from there)

That track looks scary narrow.

Anyone have any pictures of the track back in the day? Dad said he seen Garlits run there in the early 60's.

Wow, thanks for posting that I've never seen that before. My dad talks about being at the Bison Dragway (it closed before I was born) and seeing alot of Mopars there and usually winning. Where was Bison Dragway exactly? I wish they would start something locally cause Gimili is to far away (Would love to take my Magnum RT just to try it out but the 1 1/2 hr drive is too much with a 2 yr old and another on the way).

Re: abandoned race cars or racetracks - 07/23/10 03:50 AM

Originally the dragstrip was called Keystone Dragways but later changed to Bison. It was located about 20 miles east of Winnipeg just off the Trans Canada Highway right beside what is today CottonWood golf course. Not much to identify it today though.

Looks like if you run out of track you can use the lake to stop ya , unless thats where the starting line was.

Fred, I knew there used to be a drag strip over there but, I always
thought it was where the grass air field is on the north side of
Rt. 50, on the way out of town.

We used to drag race on 618 back when I was around there.

Re: abandoned race cars or racetracks - 07/24/10 07:17 PM

No, Vic, it was located on Township road #97. "Dragstrip Rd." takes off 618 between Redwood Resturant and Shell/Kraton plant and runs toward Mill Branch Rd. past the Yellow Trucking terminal and on over the hills. In fact, the man that owned the Redwood owned the Dragstrip too,,,and of course the Redwood had drive-in/curb service then, so he got the Saturday night business as well as the Sunday drag business!

Tucson Dragstrip closed about 1985 (sometimes known as Tucson Drugway - as the promoter was flying stuff in from Mexico and using the track as a landing strip).. picture taken in 2002. Left lane. You can just see the right lane. The housing developments are right next to it now.

Meander is where I learned to drag race back in the 1980's in my '65 Cuda. The girl friend (now wife) and I spent a ton of Friday and Saturday nights racing there. It was called Youngstown Drag City then.

I still remember the tech procedure there. "Got seat belts? Use them. What about a helmet? Better use that too."

I'll see if I can scan some of my old pictures and post them.

Re: abandoned race cars or racetracks - 07/17/11 06:33 PM

Sorry, the picturs I have of these tracks aren't in digital form to post. Here are some locations of a few in my area that are long gone. Use Google earth to see whats left.

Continental Divide Raceway, Castle Rock CO
39*20'06.25"N and 104*53'08.32"W puts you right at the transition from the pits to the burnout box. Property was sold to developer. Utilities and roads were installed before project went backrupt. Layout is hard to make out since its been gone so long, but it incorporated a N-S dragstrip along with a road course. Lots of big names ran here and it was a stop on the match race circuit for most fuel racers as well as the SCCA Trans Am.

Pikes Peak Speedway, Co Sp Co
38*50'13.86" N and 104*43'20.11" W puts you right at turn 1 This was a small /4 oval track that ran through the 1970s. Another hard one to make out as it was plowed under for a highway interchange.

Sportsman Raceway park, Co Sp CO
38*50'34.12" N and 104*41'56.61" W Puts you in the middle of the infield of this 3/8 mile oval. Active in the 1960s, it sat unsed for 20 years before the city bought the property and turned it in to baseball fields using the banking as containment for the outfield.

Pikes Peak International Speedways
38*49'50.74" N and 104*39'55.28" W puts ou in the pits between the 3/8 mile oval and 1/8 mile dragstrip. Active through the 1980s, it was shut down by a developer with the help of a senator who owned the dairy farm over the ridge. Claimed his cows wouldn't give milk on Sundays after the races. Development got sucked into the Savings & Loan crisis of the early 90s and has sat ever since. This layout is still easily recongnizeable.

Re: abandoned race cars or racetracks - 07/18/11 04:50 AM

First off... Cool Posting !
What about the old drag strip located outside of Erie, Colorado ???
Last I knew the paved surfaces including the return road where still there and the land around it was still bare?. ( last time I seen it was in the 1990's)
I heard that it was used by the property owner as a private runway for his crop dusting plane..
I remember it was located just Northeast of the town of Erie,Colorado ( ie, Not near/at the airport there) But they called it the "Lyon's Dragstrip". Not to be confused with the other "Lyons dragstrip" in California....
I remember It was just south of the colorado speedway exit off of I-25, Like the next exit down from it's main interchange...
Very popular in the late 50's, 60's and early 70's and then I don't remember it after that..
I would like to see any pictures of it from back in the day.
My dad owned and raced a yellow 70' torino 429 cobra back then there.
Father in law owned and raced a red 66' chevelle 4 speed, super sport 396 ( the 375 hp version)
Both cars are still in our families, But no pictures off them at these tracks.

Another drag strip I remember was outside of Cheyenne, Wyoming that I actually raced at myself with my first demon 340.
I hear it now is just a part of a frontage road, Just off of Hwy 85 now, But still has a post standing that was used for lighting the track...
I remember it was south of the city across the hwy 85 from their oval dirt track..
Anyone got picks off that one too would be appreciated???
I do remember the drag strip down at Castle Rock, Colorado too that was already mentioned, But it was closed before I got to race there as I usually only went to bandimere or pueblo by then...
Anyways, Again I think this is a cool post and like hearing about the old tracks.
Keep them coming!!!

What memories!

I don't know about the cars but from seeing Calhoun on the side of a couple of them, I'd say it's Paradise DragStrip in Calhoun, GA. AFAIK, it's still open but I did hear the owner and founder, Otto Timms, passed away in February of this year. The cars may be at that place right off I-75 near Ringgold? I can't remember the name of it.

It's now a trailer park. This is where Huston Platt had his accident that killed 11 and injured 40 in 1969. The strip never reopened after that.
